Morning Raiders,

I have some spare time today and thinking of going for a spin. Is it worth chasing Tailor in beach gutters during the day? I don’t target Tailor so very inexperienced with them. Normally would simply chase Luderick at this time of year in the day off the break wall but don’t have weed and would prefer to lure fish today. Any other suggestions would be welcome.

Look around and select a beach that's sheltered from the swell, its still forecast to be pretty big today.

There could be a bit of weed floating around as well.

Aside from that, its pretty simple. Stay mobile and cast into the gutters and holes until you find the fish. Most of the time the prime spots are the deep side of the edges where there is still a bit of white water that the fish use for cover.

Good luck.

A follow up question for the Tailor/Salmon brains trust….is a 7ft Pflueger Trion (native specialist) 3-6kg got enough grunt to handle a solid beast? The rod has a medium action so it’s ideal for casting treble  hook lures, what do you think?

That rod will be fine, as long as you’re happy with the relative short length compared to most land based casting rods. For the record, all of my rods for beach casting lures are between 9 and 10 foot.

One of my favourite rods would have a similar action and line rating, though a little longer and I have landed plenty of large fish on it. You just can’t go too hard on them in the shore break.

I find the medium taper rods have an advantage over the faster tapers when it comes to keeping the hooks in a jumping fish.

Thanks again @Green Hornet. That rod will be used mostly off the rocks when the swell and general surf conditions allow. I will probably buy a 10ft rod for casting off the beach.

I used a 12ft one the other day and it just didn’t feel right for spinning off the beach.

I find a rod between 9-10 foot ideal as it gives me good casting distance and I can cast for a couple of hours before I wear out. That being said, a mate of mine is built like a brick outhouse and finds a 12 foot rod perfect.

It just comes down to what you feel most comfortable with.
