Fish stocks in the south west and central slopes are receiving a boost with the release of fingerlings by the NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI).

Approximately 10,000 rainbow trout fingerlings and 5000 brown trout fingerlings have been released on 13 January into Jounama Pondage near Talbingo, while a total of 30,000 rainbow and brown trout fingerlings are to be released into Blowering Dam near Tumut on Wednesday the 18 January.

Additionally, 10,000 rainbow trout fingerlings and 10,000 brown trout fingerlings will be released into Lake Lyell near Lithgow on Monday 16 January.

NSW DPI Senior Fisheries Manager (Inland) Cameron Westaway said recreational anglers would benefit from these releases of juvenile trout under the NSW Government’s trout stocking program.

“The fish have been bred at the NSW Government’s Gaden Trout Hatchery in Jindabyne and are being released by staff from NSW DPI,” he said.

“This is great news for anglers who can look forward to catching these fish in a couple of years.”

Mr Westaway said the NSW Government was providing more than $1 million for its stocking program this year to ensure anglers could continue to enjoy freshwater fishing.

The program is also supported by $335,000 of freshwater angler’s fees.

During the 2004/05 season, more than 7.9 million trout and native fish were stocked in freshwater areas across NSW under the NSW Government’s State-wide stocking program and the community based dollar-for-dollar native fish stocking scheme.

“This is a boost for regional communities, where freshwater angling creates jobs and supports businesses and tourism,” Mr Westaway said.
