G'day, Heading down to kiama in a week's time, never fished the area before, have two keen little boys and misses, come from out west and don't get too coast often, will have boat, was looking at minamurra river, with kids and cook but wondering on outside fishing,if anyone could help in regards to bait and fishing holes etc, cheers

Outside should be easy enough to get a feed of Flathead, just head out to about 30-40m of water and drift over the sand with a sinker big enough to hold bottom. Minnamurra fishes OK, but, a packet of frozen Prawns and heavy line will catch you next to nothing, buy a Nipper pump and pump some fresh bait, fish the edges of weed beds and drop offs from sand flats into deeper water, not right out in the middle.

edit.......I think they are still working on Kiama boat ramp, so parking might be limited and some restrictions.

OK, pump Nippers for bait, use light line! Lake Illawarra is only about 15 minutes drive, so maybe get some crab traps and have a fish there too?

Just a tip if you do go crabbing in Lake Illawarra, the lake is almost featureless on the bottom, it's just flat mud/grit/sand, very few "secret spots"! coming from Kiama, use Oak Flats "Ski Park" ramp, look across the lake from the ramp, you will see a power station, launch the boat...use caution, the ramp is very shallow for a way out, head towards the power station until about halfway and set your traps (note laws for number allowed) fish near them so you can keep an eye on them, "share farmers" and thieves abound! You will catch countless small Bream, but now and then a decent Flathead or Whiting will bite!

Better fishing up towards the lake than near the bridge, fish live Nippers along the edges of the weed beds on the outgoing tide. It is a bit breezy hey? Not to mention the big swell and rain......
