tom123233
Hi all I would love to start fishing some of the reefs off sydney but im completely new to off shore and boat fishing. Recently I bought a grady white 191 ce and was wondering if it was capable of fishing 12 mile on and also how long it would take to get there from south head From the research that ive done it seems that live yakka slimy and squid is the best bait with a 7/0 to 9/0 hook and a large sinker and I was wondering if that sounds corect any Info and tips would be so great thanks so much Edited January 1 by tom123233
J.Smith
Boat size fine but safety depends on boat driving experience. On a good day 30 mins to 12 mile for that size boat on a bad day 1hr plus. Suggest you don't pick bad days and avoid forecasts of big southeriy and north easter changes when coming in. Find a nice day with below 10 knot winds 12 plus seconds wave period on less than 1 metre total swell and you should be safe. (seabreeze, meteye, buoyweather gives that type of info). For livies rigs use 3 way swivel, 1/2 metre sinker drop on bottom and 1 metre live bait rig on other swivel point(30 to 40kg leader)..Find the bait schools on sounder and plan your drift into them. If minikota etc spot lock over them. I personally only use size 6 live bait hook but I try to stick to 100 to 150 ml size live baits and size 6 suits those baits.
JustJames
My suggestion would be to start with small steps. Venture out the heads to troll along the cliffs, run out to the FAD's, visit some of the closer reefs and you'll soon have a feel for what you you and your boat are capable of.
tom123233
thanks so much for the tips I know where some of the fads are and have also trolled around the cliffs, do you have any recommendations for trolling lures or would you recommend slow trolling baits. And on the topic of closer reefs what would they be the only other one I have heard of is 9 mile but also that its not as consistent as some of the other reefs also is slow pitch and regular jigging an effective way to catch kings in schools of bait? Thanks so much again Edited January 2 by tom123233 spelling
