Hmm thats a tough one, i usually have two different rods for LB and boat. When Landbased (i.e. Rock/Wharf), i don't go under 11 foot (Penn Spinfisher). For Rock, i use my 12'' Ugly Stik Gold series. As for Boat, i would go for something around 8foot Max. There's this Penn Boat rod i saw which was quite cheap and came bundled up with a Penn fisher SSM reels (all series). But yeah, i would get a separate rod for Boat/LB occasions my 2 cents.. Cheers Mark

Hey guys, The took me to the tackle shop today and said, Go and spend some money, its on me . Obviously like a child in a lolly shop, i went crazy buying tackle and a new 13' rod which the attendant recommended. Its a Azagaie 13' rod.. does anyone have any reviews about this rod? I've gone through cleats and screws, but i must admit, i get the best traction with the ice cleats... paid about 60 bucks or so for them.

Hi Guys It was about 10:45 and the and I were about to go to sleep until i had an itching to go fishing. So off i went. Arrive at Greenwich at about 11:30 and the wharf wasn't as packed as it usually is. Armed with my pack of pillies and prawns i started to setup. I quickly setup my 12' rod with a full pillie and out it went. As i'm setting up my 8' rod, i was trying to attach the two pieces together and couldn't get them to fit. I looked closely and realised that they were completely 2 different Pieces. . Being pretty annoyed i thought i'd hold out and wait for something to take the pillie. An hour passes and still no hits on the pillie. I can see guys next to me catching small tailors. I figured , so i got my extra spool out and started using the handline. I rigged up the handline with a single hook and a piece of pillie, then in it goes. After about 10 seconds or so within the water, i get a bite quickly pulled the line in got an undersized tailor. Back it goes. I reckon i pulled up about 10 or so undersized tailors in a matter of 10 - 20 mins (which all went back in). Getting pretty annoyed, i thought i'd give the prawns a go. Through in a prawn and what do you know ... A YAKKA!!! after being excited, i quickly reeled in my big Rod and attached this YAKKA (hooked behind the head and near the rear fin). Out goes the livie. I continued to attempt to catch more yakkas but for some reason kept on getting little choppers. After about 30 mins or so, I noticed my rod tapping around (seemed like the livie was going nuts). I quickly got myself to striking position, Then BANG the bait runner starts to run for a while. I striked then lost it. Being kinda annoyed, I left the bait there for a while to see if it'll go for another bite, but none. Annoyed i reeled it in and the yakka was totally demolished. The bottom half of the head was chomped of to about the mid section of the body. What i found really bizarre is that the hook on the fin and back of the head seemed untouched. I figured stuff it, i'll try to catch more yakka's. Caught another yakka, but no takers. Left the wharf about 4:30am when the sun started to rise.. Wanted to stay longer but i knew the would be crack it. Pretty much went home empty handed, but it still strikes me, what fish could that of been that took my livie? Cheers Mark

Yeah mate, it was a pretty good 2 hours. It was a pitty we didn't come any earlier. Yeah landing the toothy was a bit of an effort especially on light tackle. Fortunately I brought a half decent reel along. Yeah the shark was lip hooked. Yeah, we caught a snapper aswell but threw it back. The snapper was a tiny bit over 30cm but threw it back. Apart from tailor, we caught a few yakka's which we threw out for live bait. Yeah mate, we usually do hit the decent sized tailor around that time aswell, for some reason they just kept hitting our bait. Must have been the burley that made them go crazy. I'll try bleeding them out as you mentioned. HAHAHA my wife says I can't go fishing all the time because she hates it, hence why i tell her to stay at her parents house or spend time with her mates. Yeah, between us all, we've never caught a shark or know anything about preparing it and no one would've volunteered to clean it either.

Yeah, i could imagine the look on the MRS face when i come home with a Shark.. "Honey, can you clean this up for me, Pretty Please". HAHAHAH I wouldn't have a clue how to prepare shark, some say you mince em up and batter it.

Yeah it was good fun mate! Boat was only 80 bucks for 2 hours, which seats 6 people comfortably. I think it gets cheaper when you hire longer.

Hi Guys, Me, My cousin and his mates decided to wet a line today. We left home at around 11:00am and headed towards Palm Beach. We arrived at Palm beach at approximately 12:00pm and we fired up the BBQ to have a quick feed. At 2:00pm, We hired a boat for 2.5 hours at the local marina and headed out towards the heads. When we arrived at our spot, we lowered the burley bucket and set the trail. As soon as we threw our lines in, 2 mins later, a mate is on. He reels his fish in and lands a 40cm tailor. Straight afterwards, we're all on. All of us land tailors between 35-40cm long. After fishing for about 30mins or so, a mate lands a nice 20cm yellowtail. So i decide to send him out for live bait. As soon as i re-rig up my 8 foot outfit (obviously i wouldn't bring a 12' rod on a boat) for a live bait setup, I throw the livie in and left the bait runner on. After 10 mins or so, we we're still catching tailor left right and centre the biggest going at 43cm, then we see the 8' rod start to bend and hear the reel start to scream. I quickly run to my rod and fought the fish. The fish just kept running and running and at the same time I was trying to loosen the tension off my drag (25lb line). After running for about 15seconds or so, the fish just stopped, I was thinking to myself, F#@k I lost it, then the reel started to run again. I fought the fish for a solid 5 mins. All mates were looking at the side of the boat for colour and as soon as a mate had the net ready, They were like F$#K ITS A SHARK. At the same time we were all excited and freaked out by the catch. We left the shark on the side of the boat for a while (all tired out) to take time to talk it out. "HOW THE HELL ARE WE GONNA GET THIS ON THE BOAT" and "WHO'S GONNA TAKE THIS HOME TO CLEAN IT". After pondering for a while we decided to cut it loose and live another day. We guessed the shark to be around 130cm-140cm long. At 4:30 we decide to head home and cook up the Tailor we caught for a nice fried feed. Overall a good trip out with good company and a story to brag about next time around. Total Fish Caught: 30+, took home about 12 Cheers Mark

You're absolutely correct. Forget the street name we take the bush trail down, but we just end up walking through south whale (beach, then rocks). Just a heads up, the ovens can get really dangerous like most rock fishing. There was a time where the water was perfectly still, sun shining down and out of no where you see the water recede and a wall of water comes towards you chest height. Luckily my tackle box and bag was on a ledge far away, luckily i only lost my 8'' rod and reel and not the rest of myself in the water. Don't get me wrong, its a top fishing spot (mainly catch King, Tailor, Salmon and Bonito there) but make sure you bring a mate along with you.

about 80% of the fish i get off the rocks are salmon (mainly at the ovens or North Whale), pretty fun reeling them in, but not the best tasting fish. When there's some surface action, i just chuck some metals, let it sink abit and reel it in either fast or slow, depending on the water and obstructions(I could never out reel a fish when they're hanging for a feed).

such an old post, but i'll make my 2 cents Yellow tail actually tastes really great Why i do is: * Fillet or butterfly the yellowtail * Marinate the fish in Vinegar, crushed garlic cloves, and cracked pepper. (i Usually let it marinate overnight or so) *you can either grill, barbeque or shallow fry the fish. Taste bloody awesome for something you use for bait Cheers

Went there yesterday, i stayed around the long jetty (1.3km long) near the boat ramps. Its abit dangerous if you head right down the rocks, but make sure you wear cleats (if you decide to go down to the bottom). Caught 2 stingrays there yesterday and a bonito... There's another jetty near the coal refinery but its only good for catching yakka's, haven't caught anything big there.

couldn't agree more.... the day was great. Nice and sunny, company with good mates... only if life was as easy as fishing.

Yesterday, My cousin and I took the day off work and decided to go fishing down at Port Kembla. We arrived at port kembla around 11:00am and casted our lines and had a beer (we earned it considering the walk up the jetty was abit of a hike). Whilst having a chat and drinking our beers to pass the time, my rod starts to get little taps. I pickup the rod and reel a little bit, the bang the rod starts pulling. Started winding and lifting, it fought for a while, but after 10 seconds, it felt like dead weight. Kept reeling in and to our suprise i caught a stingray, the head measured about 60-70cm. We pretty much didn't want to take it out of the water so we decided to cut the line as close as possible. After i re-rigged up and casted the another whole squid out. about 30 minutes later the bait runner starts to scream and let the fish run for a while. I started winding in the reel and again, i got another bloody stingray. After this i started getting annoyed and re-rigged and casted out again. The clouds started to get darker and we decided we'll wait another hour. Than my cousins rod goes off, he lands himself a nice bonito (using pillies for bait). Shortly after my cousin again my reel starts to whine..... started fighting the fish and got to the surface and was a nice 70-75cm king... Unfortunately i couldn't reel it over the rocks, so i decided to take the trip down to net it, but the fish unhooked itself and swam for dear life. Overall it was a pretty good day even though i literally didn't bring any fish home for the wife.

Cheers Grant, maybe it was probably worth while keeping it. On a good note, the fish had another day for someone to hook it up. i would probably be sleeping on the couch again if i brought it home and left it in the sink as a suprise for the to clean and gutt
