  1. NB: I've gone into A LOT of detail here because i'm a newbie and have been stuffed around by a lot of people trying to get this motor installed. I thought 2 weeks was a reasonable time frame. Maybe i'm just asking too much. I hope this post can save someone a bit of time and money. Finally got the electric motor onto the boat. Although there were a few hickups, it all looks absolutely superb. I can't plug the guys on here because the site sponsors might get upset, so PM me if you'd like to know who did it. He's the only guy that I could find to weld a bracket onto the tinny this side of the harbour bridge (south). The guy he used to do the painting did a great job too... although the drongo put my quick release bracket back on backwards. The guy that wired it was a tosser and i'll never go back to them, pm me for details if you're in the Taren Point area, didn't put an anderson clip on the power cable so i could get the motor out of the boat. Since rectified by a trustworthy operator i have since found, PM for details. From the outset the foot peddle didn't work properly, momentary switch wasn't doing it's thing so i had to take it away for the long weekend with only Left, Right and Throttle control. Guys at Jarvis Marine are fixing it as we speak and have told me that if it takes longer than a day to fix they'll just replace it. Pain in the bum they're all the way in SA. Good aftermarket customer service though. For all you guys out there looking at getting a new open fishing boat. If you're going to get a boat like a nomad/top ender, make sure you option it up to have a mounting bracket from the factory. From my understanding it only costs a few hundred extra, you may not ever use it, but it will save you heaps if you or the guy you sell it to ever does. Costing: Welding - $1200 + GST Bow rails cut, bent and re-welded back to the gunwale, Stacer mounting bracket supply and fit, new gunwale rubber. Repainted to look factory finished. NB. STACER quote a 10day turn around on parts. Not all the dealers will know this or in this case think to ask. If you're in a hurry for parts, MAKE SURE YOU SAY SOMETHING. Watersnake 54lb/54"shaft Slider Saltwater comes with nylon Quick release bracket (not all do, only some models) $700 for the motor, $400 for 100amp deep cycle battery. $150 Voltage sensitive relay put in to trickle charge. 54lb on the Nomad 469MP did well in windy and rainy conditions with 4 adults and beers in the boat. I'm going going to be using the motor for trolling as such so I only really use it to hold a position or move over to the next oyster lease. For this purpose the 54lb seems to be doing a good job.
  2. you're a better man that i.... He'd be wrapped in foil with butter, salt and pepper by now. Especially after the spiking...
  3. I'm with iMick, not getting snapped off by flattie teeth is the key. I'm only a newbie, and this is my experience so far. When i pulled in my SP PB flatty the other week up at Forster, I was fishing with 6lb braid and 7lb leader. Catching a 56cm Flathead from near some leases. There's no way i would've pulled it in if I'd been fishing with any lighter leader. I had a good look at the leader after I pulled the lure out of the fishs' mouth, it was pretty close to snapping. After that experience I'm going to start using 10lb leader when going for the bigger ones. I don't think this makes too much difference if you're lucky enough to hook the fish in the corner of the mouth, but when fishing with 3" or 4" soft plastics, it's pretty often a good size flatty will inhale the whole thing and that makes leader strength of the utmost importance. You'd know exactly what i mean if you saw the state of my left thumb after my extra long weekend... it's still not fully healed, i've decided to start wearing a glove. Very sharp teeth. Good luck...

    Bream Comps

Sounds like i'm going to have to give it a miss.. I'll be spending quite a few months away from home next year and don't like competing half the year. Might wait until i'm retired or if discharge from the navy.

    Bream Comps

Ok so i've finally got my boat setup exactly the way i want it (well pretty much). I'm getting better at fishing with plastics, especially for flathead, but after our trip to forster and the suggestion that i should look up the AFC Forster tournament, i've been thinking about getting into bream fishing and then the odd comp. I did a quick search and could only find comps that cost about $1000 to enter. After only ever catching 1 big bream and 2 legal snapper on lures, there's no way i'd fork out that kind of cash... I'd have more luck winning in a casino Are there social comps with weekly or monthly entry fees under $100? Is it just as simple as finding a local fishing club, i remember seeing one over Brighton way, just can't remember were. Would prefer somewhere towards Cronulla, but would be happy with somewhere within about 20mins drive. I travel a lot for work and would have to go away for months at a time... are there one off comps or it is all structured like a footy season? So many questions, if there's a website anyone could suggest that would be great.
  6. I prefer not to pay retail for most things and was hoping there'd be someone out there that could give me a few suggestions on where i could get a lean seat for my nomad on the cheaper side. Was thinking about going to a local boat warehouse and buying the parts. I've got 3 seats and a rear bench and only use 2 and the bench so would be happy to swap a normal seat for a lean seat. Anyone got any suggestions? i know half of this add should probably be in the swap section, just a bit short on time.
  7. I don't have it written on the side yet... would be keen to know where to get stickers made up though. My Stacer Nomad 469 is named "GOOD GRAVY"
  8. Sorry guys and girls, The Jewfish was 120cm, we didn't have scales but think it was probably up around the 15kg mark... It's the biggest fish i've ever seen caught... tasted pretty good with a little olive oil and salt in a pan... tasted great smoked too. We ate the flathead the next night and it was fantastic.
  9. Got out of sydney for the long weekend... Only made it to Morriset before blowing out a trailer bearing… NRMA made it within 15 mins and the guys at the local mechanic shop had me back on the road by 1130am. Got to the boat ramp at Bohnock and realised none of my accessories worked in the boat… all I had working was the new 54lb Watersnake motor and outboard motor. No sounder, live tank, bilge pump, nav lights, radio… nothing… Lucky for us the weather outside was ordinary, so being confined to the estuary wasn’t such a big deal. One of boys that came up with us heard that they’d been catching decent Jewfish in the area, so he brought his beach fishing gear and 2 blocks of pillies. We found a nice gutter that had a ledge either side of it and cast into it. We pulled out a few nice sambos and they went back in… Night fell, and as I didn’t have a head torch, and had never used and Alvey before, I bird nester it pretty quickly and resorted to sitting on the tailgate drinking beer with another mate of mine who had also had gear problems. We still had two lines in the water and all of a sudden one of the boys was on… 15min fight on 10kg mono with 3/0 gang. We’d lost some gear on the ledge we were fishing near earlier on and had since learnt the lesson to waited for a wave to surge the fish up and over the ledge. Success… After such a big fish and some angry/hungry women back at the camp site we went back and ate some of the jew for dinner. Saturday we spend some time fishing the Manning river in some pretty ordinary weather. Pulled in a few 40cm Flathead for lunch. The weather was pretty ordinary that night and although we hit the beach again. It was too miserable to fish so we had an early night. Sunday morning I snuck the boat out for a little solo mission. Used the time to make myself familiar with my new watersnake motor… 54lb on the 469 nomad does really in strong wind and current. I went back to the camp site to find that all the boys had goes for a drive up the beach to check the surf. So I pulled mine and my mates girlfriend (Mikaila and Kim) into the boat for a bit of an exploration mission up the manning. After only a 5 min run away from the campsite I found an oyster lease that was out of the wind for us to do some SP fishing. First drift past the lease and Kim was on to a nice 40cm flathead. Put that one in the tank and continued the drift, just as we got to the end of the lease, bang, she was on again. Good upgrade to a boat SP record of 54cm on a 3” Minnow Grub in Pumpkinseed. Just as Mikaila scooped it into the boat, the wind changed direction so we headed back to see what the boys were up to. The rest of the day was spent back at the same lease picking up another 43cm flattie. We anchored up near the lease and tried berlying up for bream but only caught one 26cm bream and a heap of smaller bream and snapper. Monday we packed up decided to go home a day early because of the weather… On the way home the radio mentioned a 17km traffic jam so we organised a night of accommodation in Pacific Palms. A few beers and a good feed with the friendly locals at the bowling club was a great way to finish off what we thought was the end of the weekend. On the way into Pacific Palms my engine started making a horrible knocking noise… This was the second time we’d have to call the NRMA in the same weekend. As the patrolman couldn’t find the cause, they towed my car into forster Tuesday morning. Turns out I’d picked up a rock about half the size of a tennis ball in the under carriage… After we all stopped pissing ourselves laughing it was 11:00am. As we didn’t want to drive into the Sydney peak hour traffic we did what anyone else in this situation would do…. Went fishing. The sun was out and the wind was light. The ramp and facilities in Forster/Tuncurry are top notch. Wide 3 lane ramp, fish cleaning areas, flushing/washing bays, with plenty of parking, and a pontoon wharf for setting up and getting others into the boat before setting off. . It leaves anywhere in the botany/Sutherland shire area for dead. We’d never fished this area before and all felt like kids in a candy store once we saw all the oyster leashes, weed beds, and sandy drop offs. This place is flattie heaven. We all knew we’d be onto some fish pretty soon… and sure enough I was on with a 46cm fish nice and early. Mikaila pulled in her biggest ever (43cm) which was really exciting for her. Then Paul pulled in another 41cm On the way back to the boat ramp we tried a few spots after checking out the public camping areas. Buy this time Paul and turned himself into the Electric Motor Operator and said “ Oi Jet I’m going to take us over to the lease over there”. As soon as I was within casting distance I flicked my 4” Smelt Minnow next to the lease and bang I was on. It felt like it had a bit of weight in it, and from the head shakes I could tell it wasn’t small. Up came my Soft Plastics Record and the boat’s new SP record (sorry Kim) 56.5cm Flathead. With enough fish for the 4 of us we fished until 3:30pm and caught heaps of smaller fish which all went back and then headed home. Forster will be our next holiday destination for sure.
  10. thanks for that... I had a quick look through the "word from our sponsors" but didn't notice him straight away. I'll give him a call tomorrow and see if i'm dreamin' or not. For the rest of you, please don't hesitate to PM the details of other guys you use in the area just in case the sponsors can't get me in. cheers.
  11. HELP. Two businesses in the Sutherland area have really been testing my patience over the last week. To one's defence, he's had to wait for parts from telwater... The other one is just down right useless... something i've come to expect from most of the industry in this area. I shouldn't have to tow my boat from Cronulla to Cowan to get a decent job done should I? I might sound a little disgruntled right now, and it's probably because i am. I'm at my whits end... How do these guys manage to stay in business with such poor customer service. If anyone knows of a marine service centre that could: wire in my electric motor and service the engine on thursday in the sutherland area, please send me a PM. Return business guaranteed. Please don't refer me to any businesses that happen to be named after planets of the solar system... Any locals will be able to read between the lines. These guys have potentially ruined my long weekend...
  12. I've got a stacer Nomad 469, but if i had my time again i'd go with centre console... when you go fishing by yourself, the list is annoying and just down right uncomfortable when it gets a bit choppy... Check out the Anglapro Bandit 444 or the Stacer Northern Fisher 449. Even the quinny legend if you wanna go that big or can find and older shorter one second hand.

    Egi Rods

I called up a place in sydney the other day for a custom flick stick... The 2-4kg 702 I was after started at $470... Seriously, how much better are they? I know these guys have to make a living, but what exactly am i getting for $470 out of a custom rod that i can't get from the $99 Pflueger Trion i just bought the other day. I know this is all a bit off topic, but can someone enlighten me.
  14. Just curious to know what you think the 81cm one weighed? I've never seen a fish that big in the wild.... As soon as the electric motor is finished i'm hoping to change that.
  15. You guys have got me pretty concerned... I'm getting an electric motor fitted to my stacer nomad 469 and i've gone with a 54lb/54in shaft. I've got my fingers and toes crossed this is going to be a enough power with 2 85kg blokes fishing. Everyone i've asked for opinions in shops etc seems to think it's going to be enough. Has anyone out there got a Nomad 469 with a bowmount on it?

    Which Rod?

I bought a Pflueger Trion 2-4 702 today with a Shimano Stradic Ci4 2500. Went for a quick spin at 2pm... fished til dark... didnt catch anything i could keep. But what a great combo.... flicked small blades and 1/8 jig heads with 3in curly tail grubs. Felt great... i'll be back with a better report when i catch something.
  17. Vic, Sounds like you're doing pretty similar fishing to me... although i'm only new at this, what i would do is only buy the 125m. get some cheap mono and fill up half your spool... then join the braid to the mono and fill the rest of the spool up. I've done a fair bit of fishing with my rig and initially i went through a fair bit of braid when i was learning to tie knots properly. Got snapped off a few times. I don't seem to go through my braid as quickly anymore. Also when you're fishing, it'll be unlikely you use more than the first 50m or so of the line that's on you real. You'd be lucky to be able to cast longer than 40m, and then if you hook a standard plate fish it's not going to take much line off you if any. With putting the braid on the spool... make sure it goes on REALLY F#@KING TIGHT. reduces the knots. If in doubt, get the boys in your local tackle shop to help you out.
  18. Thanks for all you help Gents. I live down Cronulla way and found out that Shimano's only down the road. Dropped the Sedona off to them. Guy reckons just from the feel of it, there's a few bearing gone already. I fully agree as it sounds like there's sand in there. I'm glad that i've made a few errors with the sedona FD to be honest, as i'm about to upgrade and get a Ci4 Stradic. Hopefully with the tips you guys have given me i'll be able to make the Stradic last a lot longer
  19. Hey cut_loose, i'm about to buy the same set up as you've got... 2-4kg 7ft trion 2piece with the Stradic Ci4 2500. Getting a spare spool from shimano for $35.20 Are you happy with overall balance and performance so far? I really like the feel of cork handles and the Pflueger Trion has the cork situated in the best position in my opinion... I find when i fish with my Starlo Stix that i've always got a hand full of plastic instead of cork. Is there anyone out there that prefers the EVA grips?
  20. Ladies and Gentleman... This is a little bit on the random side of the house, so brace yourselves... I'd like to remind you all of a very precious and sometimes forgotten commodity that is in most households. It goes by a few names, some of you my call it a piggy bank or church change. I tend to use the rather politically incorrecty term "jew jar". No offence to our hebrew bretheren. I digress. I decided on getting a new light soft plastics rod as my 7'2 Starlo Stix has a little too much butt for my liking. So i've ordered a 2 piece 7'0 pflueger trion. One thing led to another, and i found myself shopping for a new real to go with the new rod. I noticed the Shimano Stadic Ci4, and after looking at all the specs of the 2500, and reading a few reviews, I didn't need any further thinking time. It sounded pretty perfect to me. Only problem is i'm a little short of cash at the moment. Currently getting a Watersnake Bow mount installed, getting the 50hp engine serviced, and by the time that's all done the wallet will be $3000 lighter . My Stacer nomad 469 is going to set up exactly the way i want it, but i'll be stoney broke. Whilst trying to figure out how I was going to raise the funds something caught my eye... The JEW JAR!!!! I frantically ran across the loungeroom picking up the tub and throwing it onto the louneroom floor... A short time later... $315.25 I checked out the BCF website to get a quick idea of how much it was going to cost me. I was stoked! Looks like i'll even have spare cash to put some Fireline on it. So in short, don't forget the accumulative power of the jew jar... it may not look like much sitting there on the bench, but you all could be 15mins away from $300 bucks and a new fishing rod or reel. Sounds like there are a few happy Ci4 owners out there at the moment. Looking forward to using it along with my new electric motor. Look out Hacking/Botany Bay flathead.
  21. It got dropped over the side. I had to dive in a get it. So i rinsed it out in fresh water and then gave it a few squirts with lanolin... didn't take the spool off or take any screws off because i don't know what i'm doing. Just spoke with the boys in Global Tackle. Going to drop it off and see what they reckon. Been thinking about getting a better set up for my birthday next month, so not too worried. Would be nice to have two fully set up rods in the boat though, one with a blade and one with SP rig. Get sick of tying knots all day when i wanna change rigs... So hopefully the reel's not completely stuffed. Thanks for the advice... I'll keep the lanolin for the trailer only in future.
  22. Haven't been fishing long. Have a Shimano Sedona and a 7ft Starlo Stix. I spoke to a bloke that said lanolin was good for reels... Needless to say it doesn't work anywhere near as good as i used too... It's all sticky. Is it best to send it off to Shimano for a service or can i just spray some CRC in there to clean out the lanolin. What's a real service worth?
  23. I'm almost in exactly the same boat (stacer nomad 469) the navman 4431 that came with it is ordinary (paddlewheel on transducer also broken) and i need/want to upgrade... My main concern is that most of the sounders i have tried to research on the net for under $800 don't mention whether they have a speedo on them or not. The speedo that's on my side console doesn't kick in until i'm over around 15knots. I fish botany bay, the hacking, and when the weather is good i troll around the bombie and shark island. Most of my fishing is done in the bay/estuary going for flatty and bream, but when we go outside we like to troll for kingie's and bonito... I'm after a findfinder that must give me readings for: Depth ( Duh! ) Bottom contour Water temp Speed Bait schools Colour would be preferred, but will settle for a better resolution black and white screen. Not too worried about how deep it can read. I've had a very quick look at a Furuno LS4100... does this come standard with everything i need to satisfy my above list or will i have to buy other attachments etc to get the speed reading? Most of the websites the companies have don't do very good comparisons at all, so it's almost impossible for a newbie like myself to make a good decision with minimal research. I'm not in a hurry to purchase one, so would appreciate your opinions.
  24. Just wondering if you found out what the problem was with your electrics... i've had similar problems... my live tank and bilge pump won't work while my engine is running, and the other evening while we were on the way back in darkness my nav lights and sounder all cut out, so i turned them all off for a min or so then they all worked again... I've only got a single battery in my Stacer Nomad 469 (2007) for the 50hp 2stroke Merc, has a live tank and bottom end Navman sounder. Shouldn't i be able to run around with Live pump, bilge pump, nav lights, and sounder running all at the same time. I'm still in my first year of boat ownership so this is all pretty new. I always thought it would all work similar to a car... eg, car running, with a/c on and radio going powering the GPS/charging phone...
