  1. Bought an epix in 04 and it's still going ok. some paint has fallen off so it doesn't look as pretty as new. bail arm sometimes doesn't flick over every time you wind after a cast. drag is as good as day one and gears feel ok. was prolly worth the money, hasn't let me down yet. not a top of the range shimano, but has doen the job. btw, trolling some little lures for stripeys one day, a big sbt grabbed the christmas tree. one run emptied my shimano tss 4 with 10kg on it and melted the drag knob. bye bye bluefin, so i guess the moral is if you use it within it's limits it's ok, but you can only push a reel so far beyond its intended purpose. i'd buy another yocky
  2. The key to tasty salmon is looking after them from the moment they're caught. If tyhey go onto the ice straight away, they're bloody good in all sorts of ways, marinated and chargrilled, , breacrumbed, battered etc. If they're left on the deck in the sun, well, they turn into a passable burley. it's their oilyness that makes 'em finicky, a blessing and a curse. They're great for smoking, but there are plenty other options
  3. Had a picnic day in MH today, wasn't really planning to fish much. But dropped bait over near the ntorthern side of the bridge and it took off. Was a nice little snapper, did four of us for tea . Got back to Rose bay and was about to drive from wharf to trailer, no steering . Hydraulic hose had popped off olive at cylinder. Guys at PIRTEK Mascot were brilliant at helping me get a replacement couple of olives, didn't want to charge me. Big wraps for them. Hate to think what BLA would charge for same thing. Any hydraulics experts there like to speculate how hose can pop out like that? It's on a seastar front mount cylinder. Yock
  4. Back again. Actually warnie, I've had a little play with them and they're deadset easy to set up. An excellent design really. Was gonna sell them but might hang on to them for a bit and use them instead of rubber bands. Rooster, if you're talking to Miss Southam again, I'd be interested to know when they were being made. Cheers, Yock
  5. Great replies guys, thanks for the info
  6. Well they work something like this: the clip is attached to the lanyard through the hole at A. The disc with the pointed bit is a cam. You can just make out the flattened surface of it in the top clip. This cam is tensioned via the gnurled knob. I guess there's a spring-loaded ball type arrangement inside the shaft. It presses onto the face of the cam when the cam is in closed position eg the lower clip. You let your lure or bait out the desired distance, then wind your line 2 or 3 times around the pointed bit off the cam and the loop at the other end. The clip is now loaded and goes out on the lanyard. When Mrs Stickface grabs the bait, the cam springs open (top clip) and the loops of line fall from the bottom end of the clip. I was told that they were popular with people using baits. Not sure why. Would be interested to hear from anyone who's used them. Cheers Yock
  7. Hi guys, These outrigger clips were in a box of mixed tackle I picked up recently at Rozelle market. Anyone know about them or ever used them? I'd like to know a bit more about them. Someone told me they were designed and manufatured by someone from SGFC. BTW, there was a guy there a coupla weeks ago, I think he was a regular, with an Inter 80W for sale; he was asking about $650 for it. If you're looking for him, he was round the back, was, how do I put this without offending someone, kind of Mediterranean. Nice bloke. I don't know if that's a good price but he seemed keen to sell. Cheeers, Yock
  8. Now that is one helluva seriously outstanding report!!
  9. Okies! Thanks for that. Good luck at PS Yock

    Bullrout?

Not something you'd want to tread on!! My family came from farms in the Morpeth area and treading on a bullrout in the river was something they were all wary of. A great aunt managed to do it one day and according to Nan, "she screamed till the sun went down..." Cheers, Yock
  11. Hehe Ross, raising 6 marlin not such a dull day! Would have been fun for the deckie if they all hooked up. Would still like to know if that area we saw you was the Sydney Kink?? Mako, bad luck about the sinkers. You could have given us a call, I had plenty big ones on board. By the time we got to Browns it was was very calm, might have been good for a drop, though the current was steaming later at the FAD. Let's see what the weekend brings. Good luck to all. Yock
  12. Headed out from BB this morning with some mates. Bumped into Mako at the ramp, good to meet another raider. Winds were light but it was still a bit lumpy round the heads. Set our sights on the shelf, but after 15kms, planing it was still bloody hard work so we started trolling there. The weather began to improve, water was looking good colour and temp wise. Bait wasn't scarce, it was non-existent. Got to Browns without seeing a skerrick of life on the surface or on the sounder. Trolled back to the shelf, saw Broadbill working an area. If you read this Broadbill, we were the boat that came up from the south after lunch, and I'd be curious to know if that area is what you call the Kink. Anyway, score at the end of the day was a fat 0-0-0, but that's how it goes. Weekend looks good Cheers, Yock
  13. Hi guys, We're heading out tomorrow after beakies. Got a little multiple choice question for you, should we head... a) south from BB b north from BB c) south from the harbour d) north from the harbour. Still pretty new to the sydney scene so your ideas are much appreciated. Also, where is the Kink? Can't find any co-ords for it anywhere. Cheers, Yock
  14. Seals and sealions have a bit of novelty value when you first see them, but wait till their numbers build up and they start pinching snapper kings etc from your line, they won't be looking so cute and furry. BIG problem in Tas......
  15. Hi guys, Yep, I'd prefer to go with mates but it didn't work out that way this time. Things can and do go wrong, but that happenes driving your car alone too. Dunno how I'd go solo with a beakie, time will tell I guess. Have managed some decent tuna. hydraulic steering is the biggest godsend when you're singlehanded. Think I saw a report or two on another forum of marlin about. Yock Edited by Pete to remove a banned word.
  16. Hi guys, Does anyone know of any change rooms or places round the harbour you can tie up, go ashore and grab a shower? Doesn't matter if it's cold water, just something to wash the salt off with. Yock
  17. Thanks guys, Yep it was a good workout. The speed this thing came in at, and the distance it was visible tearing across the surface are memories I'll keep for a long long time. I enjoy fishing one up sometimes - it keeps you on your toes and hones your skills like nothing else. It's all about keeping calm, keeping things neat and doing things right. Not that the deck looks that neat here, the dolly got its tail up under the gunwale and knocked some wires loose. Unfortunately Rabs it wasn't on the new outfit - would have been great if it was. Will give it another go in a week or so. Saw elsewhere someone got a stripey y'day near the bait station in 24 degrees. Best i saw was 21.5 Cheers, Yock
  18. Hi guys, Headed out for a troll y'day in the brilliant conditions. Stopped off first at the Botany wide fad, saw one boat get a nice dolly. Headed to the shelf, set lures and pointed the nose towards Browns. Picked up a few small stripeys on the way, could have caught any number; they were thick. Got to Browns and it was so freakin calm! You Sydney guys get it good sometimes. Fish were quiet though so headed north. A coupla miles on, I was watching the lures, the water about 20 metres out to the side splits and a blue flash had that reel screaming. I thought it was a small marlin but an absolute stomper of a dolly started leaping. Being as I was alone, I was pretty flat out clearing rods, taking pics, handling fish etc but here are a couple. The lure is a yock original. He was just short of 140cm, good dolly I think?? Apart from that, no other strikes, plenty of small whales out there though. i think they were minkies. Cheers, Yock
  19. Loved reading that report very much. It brought back great memories. In about 1960, I went there with my parents, aunt and uncle. Caught mu first fish ever from thet jetty, a smallish bream. Hve been hooked ever since. Cheers and thanks Yockman
  20. Hi guys, Seem to be some very cluey guys around this site so.... is there a decent jig rod that works both as an overhead and a threadline? Talking about 200g jigs for kings etc. Cheers, Yock

    Avet Reels

Used a couple for the first time yesterday on a mate's boat. We were bottom bashing in about 85 metres for trumpeter. Started out with a smaller gold one, which i thought was brilliant, then picked up a larger silver model which was outstanding. Sorry I don't know the model of these, but will find out i you want. The larger one had a very comfortable offset handle. We were mugging them all day and this was the kind of thing we were catching, though not always four at a time as in this shot. Went home and checked a few out on ebay. Great things. Cheers, Yockman
  23. Thanks Ross Don't plan on doing a Chaser and get myself arrested this week, trying to stay out of jail atm. Might go down the coast for a few days and join the state of origin tourny at JB. Cheers, Yock
  24. Hi all, A couple of months ago I bought a Signature in Sydney and am finally coming to collect it this w'end. Will be around for about a fortnight. Would really like to hear from anyone with tips, spots, secret locations, (pm me if you want) to get onto few bream kings reddies or tuna while we're there. Don't worry, I'm not gonna be around long enough to clean out your favourite spots. But you know how it is when you lob somewhere new, it can take a long while to get it sorted. Or maybe just catch up with a few raiders on sydharb or botany bay. Cheers, Yockman
  25. and just to broaden the picture, there were heaps washing up on beaches in Tassie a coupla weeks ago....
