  1. Welsh Dave, yes m8 basically, we usually start after the first fad. Reason plenty of water in between Botany and Browns and seem to catch most of our fish before we hit anywhere near it. We never flog the boat only if bad weather approaches, but will give it a good run after trolling for hours on end to clear it. Will always come home with 1-4 tank for safety reasons. BillyD with the weight of your boat, you may be looking at $80-$140 for the day around 10hrs, depending on conditions and your speed of course.
  2. BillyD, have same engine, but remember engine hp is not the same as what runs through the shaft. Basic guide for you is 4500 revs 70-75ltr/hr 3000 31ltr/hr 1000 5.1-5.7ltr/hr As a rough guide our boat is 3.5-4ton,2000revs 22kn flat cond, trolling speed 6-8kn our fuel usage to browns is tripout and back 8hrs trolling around 140ltr. Only gets expensive when you open the carbies up! And she will suck the juice with pleasure! But sounds great
  3. This must be one of the most common things i see at the ramp or people starting their engines and running them at 3/4 to full rev, absolutely dieing to see one go one day. I must agree it only damages impellers to run them dry, and also distorts other parts due to no cooling. As was said "boats on water, cars on land not vice versa!" When we used the IRB at the beach the engine would always be run. Boat on trailer engine on, and a whiz bin underneath with enough water to just cover the water inlets. Engine would then be started and test run for 5min out of water. Boat would then be taken onto the beach ready for rescues. The last thing u need is an engine that wont start when someone is drowning in front of you. Always have and always will run the engine first at home before we go out to see if there is a problem. Nothing worse than going to the ramp everythings packed, your ready to go and your engine lets you down! Only once has this failed us when we did all pre checks got to the ramp launched the boat and did a starter motor happens
  4. Paul, always next time! No m8 didnt have any problems, from what i hear they are still south a bit thank god
  5. Well been studying the weather the last week and concluded on wednesday that we were not going to get what was coming. After laughing to myself over the way the Media has carried on, we fished about 3km off manly today, beautiful day swell about 1-1.5m from the ese, water temp 21.4 and a 5-10kn breeze from the nw, although further offshore was around 20kn. Slow start to the day, fish came on around 1130. Ended up with some great flatties all over 50, a few snapper, 4 rat kings all released and some nice mowies all in 20-30m of water. Interesting to note that the fish were coming up very warm, although the sounder showed plenty of life the fish were lethargic. Encountered same problem last weekend Hardly, sorry actually no boats in the harbour fishing this morning and saw no other boats around outside the heads. More stinking yachts than fishos when we came in and they were finding it hard to find wind, harbour was glass around 200pm. Great day out!
  6. Secho, been looking at google have we lol. From what i gather woolnough knoll is part of the ridge system beginning at long reef and extending se Heatons hill is also part of this system as well as many other well known spots. There are greater seamounts out there which rise dramatically from the bed, The Gascoyne is one and a place id love to fish but to organise it would take a good year. Browns, the peak, the 12 mile, have different gps marks for what part of the area you fish in eg north or sth peak, there are different parts to browns its not only one mark.
  7. Was working around Bondi this morning, noticed that at North Bondi about 12 boats hanging off Ben Buckler seemed very strange. Over the morning news a report that a rockfisher was missing, gear still on the rocks, car up at carpark, 20yr old Asian man. Why would you fish anyway with a 2M plus SE swell coming straight on?
  8. Just heard on the news a tinny has been hit by a cruiser on the woronora. One teenager is missing the other two are safe. It seems the tinny had NO NAVIGATION LIGHTS.
  9. As i said it is a repeat of an aprill fools joke from this year. If you dont believe me get a copy of the paper from the first of april. Why do i know this because i rang the paper that day TO CONFIRM THE TYPO and was greeted by the term April Fool! If you want the name and number no prob lol.
  10. Also caused by varying temps the fish are caught in, especially from the north. I think the parasite or worm breeds more in warmer waters. Interesting spin off cray fishers have trouble with occys as they release a toxin into the shell which turns to mush so the occy can feed on it without damaging the shell, the cray remains in perfect condition, except no meat in it!
  11. Actually it is a repeat of an aprill fools joke from this year, and no its not bad editing lol! Havnt done Latin since school but this cracked me up. You will also find that the tele repeats its fishing reports on the odd occassion, especially when someone is on holidays.
  12. Fishmaniac, I think it all boils down to sustainable fishing. The kingfish traps were a killer there is no arguement about that, now most pros handline for them. Yes, i was one that was up in arms about the size increase.. BUT eventually came to the conclusion that things would only improve. It has with sizeable increases in kingfish catch, size and weight. I also attribute this to the amount of bait that has increased over the number of years providing ample food sources. Healthy system healthy fish etc etc. I personally have no problem with a bigger size limit with these or other fish, to me some others need a bigger increase than they already have. Maybe the whole size limit should be on a national basis, as each state differs in certain areas. Peoples opinnions will differ but its still the same old story, The more you take the less youll have. Yes, fish will get bigger if allowed to but cant if taken before maturity.
  13. Anth, shame its on the beach and not swimming around on the end of your line!. To me it looks like a little blue possibly around 70-80 kg. Its a shame the pec fins have been chomped off as it would tell you what marlin it is. Im only going by the remanents of the last three stripes that can be seen near the tail. They look uniform in size so it points to a blue.Blacks have no stripe, blues have uniform stripes and stripeys have 2 different stripe sizes. But im no expert and this is my expert opinion! Just wondering was there a tag anywhere near whats left of the dorsal fin on either side?
  14. YEEROS, i was only talking to a mate on Sunday about them, had to look it up to see one. Apparently they were quite common aroung the sydney area in the 80s, obviously fished out. Congrats on the catch and a beautiful fish too!
  15. Hey Matty, we have no trouble picking them up anywhere in the bay. Just make sure you have a good burley trail going. Usually half a bucket of semi wet sand, a loaf or two of bread mixed in, bits of pilly and some pellets. Make sure it is mixed well. You should be able to mould the mix in your hand. If you cant then the sand is too wet. Must be the same consistency as a dry mix for a tiling bed. Then bring on the yakkas!
