GIRL KILLED
BY SHARK IN
GEORGE'S RIVER
SYDNEY, Sunday.
Valma Tegel, 14, of Russell St.,
Oatley Bay, George's River, was
killed by an 8ft. shark in three feet
of Water at Oatley Bay, yesterday
afternoon.
The girl had been swimming with
her father, Walter Tegel, and her
cousin, Barbara Walther, 13, at
small beach near her home.
She was horribly mauled, and died
a few minutes after being taken from
the water by her father.
The girl's father fought the shark
with his feet and fists, and forced it
to release her.
Tegel and the two girls had been
swimming in shallow water for about
25 minutes when the shark attacked.
Two Sharks Sighted
Two sharks were sighted to-day in
Oatley Bay, George's River, near the
spot where Valma Tegel was killed.
Despite a desperate and courageous
effort by her father, Rudolph Tegel,
who straddled the shark and fought
it with his bare fists, the girl was
horribly mauled, losing her left leg,
and she died in her father's arms as
he was carrying her from the water.
