  1. Raiders,

After reading a few of Cungee George's reports, I am interested to find out what other raiders have caught on a squid jig.

As for myself I have only managed squid, but on one occasion as I had the squid to the surface about 15 meters from the rocks and I think it was a large kingy smashed me and took the squid and jig from me.

    Tell us your story...

    Cheers

    Hi,

I caught a king fish on a size 2.5 natural colour jig while jigging it aggressively in deep water with start pause method. I think I've found a new method for kingfish jigging. It was more fun than pulling in those lazy squid.

  2. Couldn't agree more for those that fish the Hawkesbury often enough all feel the same way.

Would like nothing more than to see a catfish comp with the winner being the one who brought the most back dead.

However, there are many who believe respect should be shown to all living creatures......

I just think they shut down the system like carp.....

Just curious....the people getting plagued in Catfish numbers are you fishing directly on the bottom? My last trip I was fishing 1 to 1.5m off the bottom and managed to keep the catfish at bay scoring two jewies on whole squid. Hope this helps.

  4. Hi all first ever post, im thinking about heading to the hawkesbury river on monday 6th sept just wondering has anyone fished there lately and how you went? also was thinking if the swell is kind to us we might head to long reef any info on how these two have fished recently would be great.

    thanks guys

    Hi bigfella86,

Welcome to fishraider :1welcomeani: . The railbridge in the Hawkesbury River is a top fishing spot to try. One tip with the hawkesbury river if the catfish are in numbers use paternoster style rigs. Keeping your bait off the bottom keeps the catfish numbers down to a minimal. Good luck :1fishing1:

  5. I snuck off down the river for a few hours this arvo near high tide and wanted to see if the blackfish were on the chew.

I had some really nice weed that Rickster had given me and sure enough they were around.

I landed enough for a feed for my mum and lost a beauty, pulled hooks ranting2.gif

The average size was really good for the Georges and I was pleasantly surprised.

    Cheers Stewy

Cracking looking fish. Only ever done a little bit of black fishing but they surely give a good fight on light gear.

  6. finally got what i was looking for, after 4 years of fishing and many cold nights alone on jetties and rocks and untold dvds on how to catch em.I bagged this mutha of a jewie,I spent 30 mins trying to swim my jewie in waist deep water but the poor bugga wouldnt right himself which was a shame after targeting them for so long ,I've gained much respect for the elusive mulloway. Is there a site where it tells you how long the fish can stay out of water and how to swim them....Thanks jew gaffa, jew hunter, keng and the fishraiders site for all your help and info this was not just my jewie but a combined effort that once all information was gathered and applyed correctley paid dividends.

Congratulations on your first jew, the bug only gets worse from here on. Hope to see many more photo's over the coming months :1fishing1:

  8. It was a last minute decision trip. We left Port Hacking about 12.30pm and trolled from Jibbon Bombora down to Marley Head. Conditions were great.

We picked up three nice tailor trolling close in. For the first time in ages there were no bonito. (Where have they all gone?)

Started a drift just south of Marley and eventually ended up off Curracurrang. That's a long drift! Most importantly, no jackets bothered us!

    post-4381-128063444343_thumb.jpg

We picked up a few flatties along the way. Syd and myself caught most of the flatties while someone had to have a "little lay down" as they were feeling a bit "green".:074:

However, Phil did manage to get one flathead.

    post-4381-128063442583_thumb.jpg

Calm conditions meant a quick trip back to the ramp.

A very enjoyable afternoon on the water and a good feed for the three of us.

Syd shows off his two best flathead.

... and two of the tailor, including the biggest that young Phil caught.

    post-4381-12806344705_thumb.jpg

The tailor fillets were smoked and tasted delicious.

Another great afternoon on the water.

    Cheers

    Peter

Great catch guys. Conditions out there looked great. Smoked tailor mmmm

  9. can anyone give us some tips on spots to catch squid in port hacking [from a boat] i am new to this area thanks the bull

Squid are all through the Port Hacking. Concentrate in areas like Gymea Bay, Burraneer Bay right up the end of the bay, Southwest Arm as you are heading in up to the first right hand bend along that side or Port Hacking Heads, Southwest Corner of Jibben Bombora right side of the heads or the Northern side of Shark Island a couple of km's left of the heads. Hope this gives you a start.

There are lots more spots which you will find as you are moving around.

    Good Luck

    Chris

  10. Mate great to see the little guy into it, I remember taking my two at the same age, good stuff.

    Regards Scotty Lyons

    Hi Scotty,

He's showing all the signs of becoming a good fisherman. He's always pulling me into the garage to play with the rods and reels and wanting me to put him in the boat.

    See you on the water.

    Regards

    Chris

  11. Hope you cook your jackets in their skin. Skin peels off very easy when ready.

When cleaning your fishing knives or bait boards etc use their skin. Top scourer.

No I haven't ever tried that way but next time I get a catch of leatherjacket will give it a try. I usually cut off their heads and skin them before frying.

Thanks for the tips, always knew their leathery skin was good for something  .

    Chris

  12. I quite like nannygai fillets, and providing you get enough of them, they make great fish cocktails. Very sweet flesh.

Anyway, that's a good feed there Chris.

Did you lose many rigs to the jackets? What depth were you fishing?

    Cheers

    Peter

    Hi Peter,

Nannygai are a delicious eating fish but aren't easy caught these days of size. We fished the Humps 220ft on the drift to 200ft and kept going over the same drift for Snapper which was near a fish trap (less problems this way with leatherjacket). We then headed another 10km down the coast to a reef at 150ft, anchored up and caught the leatherjackets and a Pike 54cm (biggest I've ever seen). We were very lucky as we lost no rigs to the jackets, rigs were made out of heavy duty stainless wire and we were using thin braid main line (they weren't in plague proportions that day).

By the way, I enjoy reading your reports you post with Sid. Was speaking to Sid one day while I was doing some work at his neighbour's across from him and he mentioned you guys would be going to Brown's. Have you done that trip yet? If so, did you have any luck?

    Chris

  13. Gooday Chris.

Great to hear that Gems are in numbers.

I think the bag limit is too low on them.

Anyway I also think they are great eating.

    Well done

    Hi Citypainter,

I love eating the Gemfish too, very tasty. We get our families together and enjoy a really nice fish dinner. I find they are more tastier than the Blue Eye Cod. I'm with you on the bag limit because when you let them go they are dead anyway. Yesterday people were gaffing them off the surface on their way home from Trolling.....we all had a chuckle as we were doing the drops. Good luck next time you go fishing and hopefully see you out there.

    Chris

  14. Great catch there Chris, thumbup.gif Do you eat nannygai (REDFISH,SCARLET SEA PERCH) at that size? I find they have too many bones to be bothered with although they do taste nice.

    Regards Jeff

    Hi Jeff,

Thanks. We were really happy with the Snapper as my mate has never caught legal Snapper (over the moon). I love leather jackets so I was happy with those for a feed. Yeah the nannygai was small (23cm). I would have loved to have used him for livebait for a kingie but he had no life left in him. I did catch some lovely nannygai a month ago fishing the Kink area and they were over 30cm each and very tasty. I find the bigger nannygai are in the 200m zone not in close like the Humps.

    Regards

    Chris

  15. Late start today, hitting the water at 9:00am. Went for a trawl along the Shelf for fat zero's, saw plenty of bait about and weather was perfect so headed out to Browns after lunch. We managed six large Gemfish caught with slimy Mackerel which I had caught from Sunday's trip. Gemfish were easily caught as the place is thick with them at the moment. Continued trawling with no success but we were still rapped as we all got a feed and enjoyed a perfect day on the water.

  16. Hi Mindripper,

Lovely catch for the Georges River. I haven't caught Salmon that far up the river before. Well done.

Next time you go down to Lambeth Park in the day use blood worms off the walkway near the red channel marker and you will catch all species of fish as it is deep water there. Even Jewfish can be caught there in the day using worms. Let me know how you go.

    GOOD LUCK!!!

  17. Nice catch you have there- well done!

Hope you were wearing gloves when you touched that pike - they stink bad!

    Cheers

    DHYPE

    Hi Dhype,

You're right they do stink but no I wasn't wearing gloves, even my mate said they stink but at the time I didn't care I was happy to see one that size, it had teeth on it like a piranha.

  18. Went to the humps with a mate today to try our luck on Snapper. Considering it was only our second time down that way we did ok. Caught five respectable Snapper (34cm-37cm) and lost a good one due to line failure, but as they say "you learn from your mistakes". Also caught a Yellowfin Pike 54cm on bait, it actually look like a small jewfish (from what I can see I think I may hold fishraider record for this species??). Heaps of leatherjackets down that way, kept a few to eat as they're very tasty. Plenty of good size Slimy Mackerel on the bite, which I will be using at Brown's Mountain on Tuesday. Hope other raiders had some luck over the weekend.

Attached are some photo's of my catch

  19. Hey all,

Me and a couple of mates headed out today to see what we could get stuck into. We started off at 12 mile for nothing. Not much on the sounder and no takes. I did not see anyone else land a fish while we were there either. BUT... At least we did not loose any gear to the jackets (touching all the wood around me!!!)

We then pushed out to browns for a quick bottom bash and a search for yellowfin. We bottom bashed for about two hours and easily got out bag limit on big gemfish. They ranged betweem 65cm and 99.5cm.

While my mate was using his electric reel, i again opted for a more hands-on approach. Using an alvey reel on a short rod with a couple of circle hooks i was ready to go. Last week i was using a massive sinker (probably about 3kg). It destroyed me physically winding it up. I did two drops, was buggered and lost my fish on the way up! So today i tried a much smaller sinker, about 500g. Although it took much longer to reach the bottom than before the retrieve was made much easier. I did 3 drops and landed 4 fish, by which stage we had our bag limit. I was pretty happy considering i landed the largest gemfish of the day and my mate only beat me by around 5 minutes on the retrieve. Lesson learnt: go light if you are doing it manually!

We then shot wider in search of a temperature break. Nothing. Cubed for a few hours. Nothing. WHY ARE THE SYDNEY YELLOWFIN SO THIN THIS YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!????????

We then shot back to 12 mile and jigged for nothing. Spoke to a few other guys who also had nothing. Not a good day for kings.

At least we got a feed though!

    Andrew

    Hi Andrew,

Excellent feed of gem fish. I had a similar day to yours a few weeks ago except while pulling up my gem fish I had a massive squid eating the neck off my gem fish, I was amazed to see this and the size of it. Tried catching the squid on a jig but all he wanted was the gem fish. We also cubed for hours with no luck too. Let's hope our next trips are more productive with those arm stretching yellowfin.

  20. Hi Raider,

Went out to the Peak for a jig this morning armed with 20 jigs expecting jackets or bust offs.

Jigged for approx 2hrs. Hell this is hard work, sounder was showing fish & heaps of them.

My jigs must have been butt ugly, not a single touch

anyways this wont be the last, hard work for a big dounut.

spoke to the charter guys out there they had same result

    Hi Alphabet,

I've had days like that. Next time take some livies with you as it can be a total turn around. Good to see the fish are there anyway. Good luck next trip.

  21. Hi Fishraiders

Took my son out for his first fish today. Went down to Wanda Beach to check out the conditions. Talking to a guy there he said to me "you're wasting you're time as it's too windy". I thought, we're here so may as well give it a try. Armed with pilchards we set off down to the beach for my son's first lesson. Fished from 2:00pm to 4:00pm and we did ok considering the conditions. Ended up catching one Trevalley and one Salmon. Just to see the look on my son's face as I was pulling up the fish was enough for me and the best thing of all is that he gets to eat his own catch as he loves fresh fish. Mission accomplished

Sorry about the quality of the photo. Just started posting on fishraider so photo's will improve.
