  1. It turned out my inexperience with handling the boat the reason for the tilting. I am getting better and better with more trips and can safely say that it no longer tilts. So thanks for all your input.

I suppose the old saying, practice makes perfect is correct.

I promise to take some pics of the boat and post this week.

Now all i need to do is practice at catching more fish.

  2. Hi All,

Went out to Georges River yesterday with a workmate. Weather didnt start out very well and by the time we got to the boat ramp at Picnic Point, it was pissing down.

Got onto the water and anchored under the Alfred's Point bridge until the storm passed over. Lots of bites and caught about 20 bream, but unfortuntelately all throw backs.

Once the storm passed, moved to Como bridge. Again lots of bites, catches and releases. Decided to try a rod with fresh squid to possibly lure big ones. And guess what....2 minutes later we had a big hit. Hauled it in and it was a nice snapper around 36cms.

All in all we took home 3 fish and threw back around 50 fifty. Not much of a feed but still a great day out. Beats working.

  3. Hi,

Is a fish finder good as whats its cut out to be? If so, is a black & white basic one for around $200 sufficient, or i should go for a better one? Any recommendations is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

  4. Hi,

Went fishing with the boat for the first time this afternoon in Botany Bay with the kids. It was around 3.30pm. Water was fine.

Anchored near the runway. First throw immediately got a bite. 2nd throw landed a nice whiting (40cm)...you beauty.....

After that, barely got a nibble. After an hour and a half, moved to a different spot further out toward the end of the runway. As it was my first time, i didnt want to go out too far.

Very few nibbles again, except for a small snapper. Threw back in.

Headed back to the ramp around 7pm, with only one fish.

The main thing is the kids had a good time and we got back safely. We can live to fish another day.

I was using prawns, chicken fillets and i even used lures, but no good. Was it my bad fishing, or was it one of those days. Did anyone catch anything this afternoon in the bay?

    Thanks.

  5. Hi,

Excuse my ignorance, but i am new to the boating and fishing world and am not familiar with the terminolgy used for the fish and baits.

Can anyone provide me with the meaning of some of the acronyms used in boating and fishing?

Eg. Yakkas? What are they and how do you catch them for bait?

    Thanks.

  6. Hi,

I did experiment with the trim, same thing. The load was evenly shared along the boat. It seemed to tilt to thw right side. I checked the tilt setting at the engine, it it was set at the last notch towards the boat. Not sure if this is correct, but this is how it was when i bought it. Thanks.

  7. Hi,

I have a 15ft V150 Nautiglass Cuddy Cab. Hull and outboard are in excellent condition.

I am only new to boating. Took my kids out for the 2nd time today on Georges River. A bit of wind and water a bit choppy.

Boat was quick getting up on the plane. It would lift a lot from the front, so i trimmed it a bit.

When the water is calm, it runs steady as a rock.

I am having trouble keeping it level when i am cruising along when there are waves or other boats beside me. The boat seems to lean to one side. I slow down cause i am worried about tipping over.

This is annoying as i then have to get the boat back on the plane. This happenned all day.

Maybe i am not controlling the boat right or am a bit scared of tipping over. Or maybe i am not hitting the water correctly or something else? Please assist....Thanks.

  8. Hi,

I want to setup my boat with dual batteries. I currently only have one. Does anyone know how this is done, or do i need an electrician?

Is it recommended? I'd rather have the electricial gadgets running off a separate battery. Thanks.

  9. Hi All,

I am new to the boating world. Need your help in finding good spots to fish in Sydney. I live in the south west of Sydney.

Botany Bay, Georges River, Hawkesbury, Berowra Waters, etc.

Information such as best tides, bait, tackle etc.. Many thanks.

  10. Hi All,

Today was my first new run in my new boat (well second hand boat that is). Took the kids after school to Georges River National PArk at Picnic Point for a couple of hours to fully test.

Went quite well. Lots of grunt in the old 70 HP Evinrude. New steering seemed to be fine. (I believe its normal for one side to be harder to steer than the other when your cruising along?). Did an hours fishing around the bend past Alfred's Point bridge. Lots of bites and near catches, but unfortunatelty we came home empty. But my goal today was to see how the boat performed, and it went well. The kids were happy and thats all that counts.

I am still a bit rust in my driving. We had a bit of scare when i was cruising along at hig speed when the boat seemed to lean to one side. I thought it was going to tip over, but i slowed down and it balanced back. Not sure what i did wrong, it was a straight run and the water was a bit choppy. Was it the trim of the engine or soemthing else i might of done wrong. It scared me.

There were 2 of us at the front of the boat, the young one was in the cabin and the fourth was standing in the cabin out of the opening at the bow.

Where in Botany Bay should i fish, or Georges River? What tides to fish? What bait to use, strenth of lines, sinkers and hook sizes?

I forgot to take pictures today to post. I will do next time. Many thanks.

  11. Installed new steering cable & helm yesterday. Perfect steering now and only cost $224. Cheaper than the quoted $600. The only thing is te cable was about 30 centimetres too long, which shouldn't really matter. The next size down would have been either just right or a bit of a tight sqeeze.

  12. Hi All.

I am using unleaded fuel 50:1 mixture. I have 2 different views from 2 marine mechanics. One says to use unleaded only as premium has high octane and the other says only use premium. What is best to use on a 1977 70HP Evinrude? Thanks.

  13. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Problem Fixed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Took it to a wonderful marine mechanic at Picnic Point this evening.

1.Bottom coil was faulty as it was not giving out enough spark. Replaced with new one.

    2. Top carby main injector was partially blocked. Cleaned out carby 1 & 2.

Ran boat again for about 15 minutes hard and didnt miss a beat. Mechanic informed me that engine is very good for its age.

One thing needs fixing which is the steering as it is a bit tight.

Thank you to everyone for your help.

  14. My cousin who is a motor mechanic checked out the outboard on the ground today and found the engine to be in good condition. Idle'd well. Sparks were good. Compression was 120 in each cylinder, which apparently is good.

He found the coils to be suspect as they had cracks, and would most likely fail under load. He recommended we change all 3 coils and see how it goes. Hopefully if not, then will take it into the water on the weekend with a marine mechanic.

  15. Johnno - Will do that tomorrow as it is getting dark now.

I did notice when the outboard is idling, the least reaction from the engine when i pulled the lead out from the middle plug, but when your out in the water after ten minutes the top one has the least reaction when the lead is removed. Is it possible that the 2nd one can take out the 1st one when the engine is hot?

  16. I swapped the orange wires in the power pack and the engine didnt sound too good. was back firing and not idling right (hopefully hasnt caused any issues).

I swapped them back agin and it started ok. I ran in in idle for 20 minutes and used the hair dryer to heat the suspect coil, but to no avail. Motor idled perfectly and all plugs were firing. I would remove one at a time the plug leads in which the engine would react.

So i am not sure if there are any issues with the coils or power pack?

One thing i did notice what that the fuel hose into the fuel tank doesnt seem to be firmly tight on. I basically touched it and it released. It doesnt seem to go tight on. I also noticed a small fuel hose between the top abd middle carby cracked on the outside. It does not leak fuel but the cracks are noticable. Not sure if this would cause the issues i am experiencing with spark loss to plug 1.

  17. We have had much needed rain the last 2 days in Sydney. Expecially today. Unfortunately these were my 2 days off from work and i have been unable to do any coil or power pack tests. Oh damn.......

Enquired about prices for the powerpack and coils. No one has any new ones, only second hand. The guy at the wreckers seems to think that if a coil or powerpack is no good they will not work at all. He seems to think that it would be something else otherwise the motor wont work at all. I have a feeling he maybe wrong as most people have informed me that these issues mostly arise when the parts heat up.
