  1. Hey Stan, I fish Browns with a large Alvey winch which I attach to grab bars on the side of my barcrusher. It takes a while to get to the bottom and up again to re-rig. I was worried about using an alvey because I didn't think you would be able to 'fight' the fish. I have caught plenty of blueeye and big gemfish and was suprised with the fight they give. I use 100lb braid with a 200lb leader and 50 lb dropper for the sinker. I use old lead window sash weights for sinkers and half a yakka for bait. I find it necessary to have the boat in reverse into the current to allow the bait to go straight down to the pinnacle you see on the sounder. Anyway hope it is useful. I wouldn't use an electric winch either. My mate tried to use a 50W tiagra but found checking bait was too cumbersome. Cheers Anthony
  2. G'day, I regularly get tailor trolling in close to the rocks at either end of pearl beach. They usually aren't huge fish, usually between 30 and 40cm with the ocasional larger fish. But I am catching them for jewie baits so that size is perfect.Early morning or late afternoon seems best when there is a bit of a swell going and lots of foam on the water. Hope it is helpful. headinout
  3. Hey Raiders, My mate and I fished the classic last weekend and struggled with the heat but got a few fish. We headed out to east reef to get some bait and trolled up some bonito for jewie baits. After filling up with yakkas we headed up river for the night. The couple of hours up to dark fished very well for bream on both Friday and saturday with over 30 legal size bream being caught. All but half a dozen were returned. We weighed in a 36cm but were way behind the 1.3kg monster that won. I have never caught so many small jewfish around 15cm. The bream just loved the leadies we used for bait. My mate ended up with a 5.5 kg jewfish and was very lucky to get heaviest jewfish ( 4th heaviest fish ). We nearly missed the weigh in when a huge piece of rio went through our tyre on the way there. We were stuck on Windsor Road without a fitting tyre Iron until the missus saved us by bringing a different tyre iron. Any way we had a great weekend and enjoy fishing the classic each year Cheers Anthony
  4. I will be going in it with a mate. We usually fish up the river a bit but with all the fresh might have to soak some big baits around the mouth. Lets hope the weather clears up for the weekend. Catch you on the water Anthony
  5. Hey Guys, I am contemplating getting a new colour sounder. I am looking at a hummingbird with side imaging. Has anyone used side imaging? If so:- Is it a gimmick or useful? What depth do they operate in? Are they easy to read and interpret on the water? Cheers Anthony
  6. Great fish Prawn Star, Did you drop any livies down? I think I drove over the shallower peak you were fishing on the way home from Texas last trip. It loooked fishy and Scotty Thorington was fishing it. i marked it and will try it next trip. Well done on some good kings. Anthony
  7. Hey John, what a super fish. What did you get him on? Well done Anthony
  8. G'day mate, I would put out a couple of xmas trees and a couple of deep diving minnows. That will cover the bonnie the tailor and give you a chance of kings arounf the headlands. The other week my mate and I had a great session around east reef for bonnies and tailor. We also got cleaned up by what I guess was a good king. I would stay close in to the washes around the headlands. Cheers Anthony
  9. Thanks mate, We were fishing a peak about 104 metres out of 115 metres. Cheers Anthony
  10. G'day guys, I was down at Lake Conjola over January for a day visiting friends. I didn't take a rod but I went snorkelling between the entrance of the river and the end of the caravan park. Every weed patch i swam over held at least one flattie from 60cm up to close to a metre. I was gob smacked on how many there were in such shallow water. There is a flathead tree in the caravan park with some massive heads on it. I reckon the flatties I saw would be cunning and hard to catch as they don't get that big without it. My mate said they were getting some smaller but legal flatties drifting in the larger part of the lake. I don't know if the flatties would be there tis time of the year however. Good luck with the trip Anthony
  11. My mate and I headed out to Texas reef off Terrigal on Saturday 17th July for an overdue session for some kingies. We dropped down a livie while we started jigging. We only got one drop on the jigs beforre the bait was taken. After a long hard fight to get it off the bottom it came up relatively easily. We didn't weigh it but we estimated it around the 10kg mark. We also caught a 70cm kingie, an undersized rat and a large bonnie. We also lost another good fish when we struggled to get the rod out of the holder and the line got cut on the prop. Why does jigging always sound like a good idea until after the third or so drop. We are planning to head out again in a couple of weekends. We are going to focus on livies during the next trip. Cheers and see you on the water
