  1. Headed out at 3pm today in the tinnie and was surprised not to see any other boats out? it was nice and calm. Tried Shark Island for squid but the water was dirty so left and picked up a brace of nice Tailor doing a slow troll over to Balmoral with a Yo Zuri DD. Got there with the intention of collecting some yakkas but the water looked pretty clean so had a flick for Squid and picked up four pretty big Calamari in about 45 mins. Thought I would then head over to the Spit Bridge to see if there was any activity, decided not to soak the squid but to keep them for a feed as it was more than enough me and the missus for dinner. When trolling through the bridge I noticed some pretty big boomerangs on the sounder so decided to see what they were, put on a Sebile Flat Shad 66 HSK and dropped it down, three lifts and boom! I had whatever it was hooked for all of five seconds before I was reefed or barnicled! gutted. there was a lot of weight. Went back for another pass once I had tied on another lure but whatever they were had buggered off. I think they may have been Jew Fish but I thought they only fed at night? Anyway I will definitely be trying again!! Rolled the squid in flour, salt, pepper and chilli flakes and fried em in lemon infused olive oil with asian cabbage salad. pukka! Tight lines
  2. Did a quick three hour run about today in the tinny from 4pm, snagged a couple of decent sized tailor on a yo zuri deep diving minnow just off Lion Island and a near legal king at clifton gardens. No squid and no yakkas at the usual spots. Water is definitely clearing but green and loads of small translucent jellyfish. Heading out at first light to see if I can get me a keeper king...... Tight lines ALI-G
  3. Went out for a spin in the tinny around 6.30 this morning. Noticed there were plenty of fish busting up on the surface, got hit a few times but failed to set the hooks? I have no idea what the fish are feeding on but they wouldn't even touch little 3in transparent salt n pepper slug-go's, I think they may be bonito but usually bonnies will eat just about anything you throw at em as long as it's not too big? tried to hook one all day but to no avail! tried for some squid at shark island and Lady jane but no takers, was hoping to test the new Daiwa nude jigs I brought from Platco in Japan....... they obviously dont work It was then a short troll over to Balmoral to try for some yakkas, on the way we came across some spoil from a trawler and there were gulls and fish everywhere! Again we just couldn't get the fish to take our lures?? anyway Balmoral produced a few Yakkas but it was tough as there were several thousand sweep to get through at the surface. a couple of swimmers mentioned that there were some kings swimming about of a good size and we spotted one cruising around but there was no interest in our offerings. Getting desperate now we moved over to the Northern end of Balmoral and anchored up near structure, dropped the livies down and decided to have a flick with a 4in powerbait minnow for flatties. First cast and bang!! I set the hook in to something decent, unfortunately I took a knife to a gun fight and soon my 17lb leader snapped clean under the wharf as my 2500 Sol's drag didn't cope, Things were not going well!! Time for the big guns, I decided to try my new Terez 15-30lb rod with one of the new waxwing lures from Shimano in silver, I was amazed by the action of the lure by just winding the reel, the eratic action looked great. Sure enough second cast and a decent king followed it out but bottled it at the last second this was getting ridiculous! Finally a couple more casts towards the structure and wallop!! After a shortish tussle I landed My first King of the season, Thank F$%@! he was only around 60cm but was very thick and in great condition. All in all it has been a bit or a weird year so far in the harbour but I think the kings are finally arriving in numbers, I may have only caught a rat but i saw plenty of activity and cant wait to get back out there. Did anyone else get anything decent, there were loads of boats out there? Tight Lines Ali-G
  4. Hi People, went down to La Perouse on the weekend for a run and a bit of a fish at Browns Rock. I hadn't been down there for a while and was amazed at what i found. it looks like a rubbish tip down there, plastic bags, fishing line, newspaper, broken glass, cans everywhere? It' looks like there isn't a bin down there any more but there isn't any excuse for this disgusting behaviour in what is a beautiful & protected national park. If fishermen continue to behave like this we will lose great land based spots like this for good. Does anyone know who I need to report it to other than the National Parks people? Cheers
  5. Dunno how big they were, probably about 75-80cm yeah. Just a ball sinker and 40lb flourocarbon leader with a 7/0 mutu lightwire circle hook a couple of handle turns off the bottom.
  6. Started at 7am, managed only one large live squid (so had to chop it up), hooked both of them within 5 mins of each other around 9:30am
  7. Caught these two on Saturday morning. Rose Bay on fresh squid. Lost what felt to be a much larger animal due to a pulled circle hook right at the boat! Will head out again this weekend...............Summer is arriving early me thinks!!
