  1. I use 30lb braid on my main lines and 60 to 80lb jinkai leaders. I tie a double in the braid and then use the double to tie a double uni with the leader. 8 wraps for the doubled braid, and 4 wraps for the heavy leader. Never failed me.

I use a swivel in the system now and tie a uni from the doubled braid main line to a ball bearing swivel, and then a uni to the swivel from the leader. works a treat. I even use a uni to the hoodlum hooks I use.

The only problems I have encountered is with over 1 year old berkley fireline in 30lbs. It's snaps above the double if a quick but small shock is put on the line from a fish. Solved the brittle line problem by using Platypus super braid. Never had a problem with this line.

    good luck.

    Kingy

thanks Kingy...you tie the braid straight to the swivel with an 8 wrap uni?

  2. Here's a follow up quesion from my recent pittwater report. My albright knot snapped with a kingy 10ft from the boat. I had 11 turns of the 15lb braid around 15lb seaguar fluorocarbon.

Do I need to tie a double in the braid before tying the albright. (I do this for 30lb braid to 50lb leader). If so, in what line weight is this necessary?

Should I just stick to the double uni? (I have never had one of these fail)

    Cheers,

    Kit

  3. I planned this morning session chasing kings for the last week but couldn't round up the usual suspects to join me. The winds looked ok so I borrowed my mates little stacer with 15 on the back and putted out in search of some squid.

Tried a new spot since the wind was up from the west. Sprayed some berkley ultrabite on the pink yozuri and cast it out toward the kelp. turned my back for 2 seconds only to hear my drag off....good size calamari (sorry no pic) The tube length was about 28cm. Couldn't get another one after that. Tried another spot but was getting impatient and headed to a nearby reef.

Baits were in the water all of 5 minutes when I decided to move my heavy outfit since it was too close to the anchor line...picked it up...felt a tug...rod buckles...drag runs...goes slack. I'd accidently pulled the squid while moving the rod. The kingy had bitten it off just under the hook. :1badmood:

2 minutes later my symetre 4000 starts screaming. I set the hook and off we go. fought this king for about 6 or 7 minutes. gave me grief on the snapper raider and 15lb tuffline....I play him to within 10ft of the tinny...good colour, nice fish 65-70 maybe...back the drag off just a little...then PING...my knot busts off at the braid to fluoro join! :1badmood::1badmood::1badmood::1badmood:

Not very happy at this point...I'd just swapped over from a double uni to the albright knot the night before! (on some advice) I use the albright on my 30lb braid to 50lb leader with no problems but I tie a double in the braid...Do I need a double in 15lb braid to 15lb fluoro? Retie with a double uni and my hands shaking.

I thought "that's it" had 2 shots at them...I'm going home with calamari. Still had about 2 hours to fish so I persevered. With about 20 minutes to spare I see my little flick stick take a hit (I had this one free floating a strip...she's spooled with 8lb fireline and 10lb leader). I pick her up slowly...line moving...whack, I'm on. murphy's law. Fought this king for at least 10min till he wrapped me around mooring and I thought..."that's it...never going to see this one". I move over to the mooring and see colour. start to unrap the line and pull the rope up too. Thankfully, the fish is pretty buggered by this point. Getting closer to the surface. NETTED! finally. One good king to show for the morning.

kingies 3 (another one reefed me)...kit 1. I'll take that result. A beautiful morning on the water too as the wind died down. Here's a pic of the solo king.

  4. ps why is there the need for the 1m of leader that starts from between the reel and first guide to the tip of the rod ?

there isn't...though when casting I prefer to have some leader in the guides to give it some "spring" and to avoid chaffing the braid. you generally only need 1 to 1.5 meters of leader all up as you said earlier in this thread.

  5. You bet Kit...The rate they are growing...it won't be long before there are heaps of legals in the lake.

I always wear those placcy clogs when wading just in case.

Have you had much luck on the flatties in the lake lately mate?

    Cheers,

    Pete.

yeah...the flatties are still around. haven't caught a big one for a couple of weeks.

  6. Good job robbie,

Better then our trip out the other day hey..lol

Also my first post so gday to all the fellow fisho's

    Marcus.

Marcus, well done on your first post! you heading down to cg this week? after last weeks effort I'm not sure if i'll be back for a while. tell me the kingies have returned.

  7. BEFORE YOU MAKE YOURE MIND UP, CHECK OUT THE STARLO PRO LITE!

TOP ROD FOR THE MONEY WELL MADE CASTS WELL AND HAS A NICE ACTION.

PROBABLY THE BEST VALUE PF ITS CLASS IVE SEEN FOR THE MONEY!!!

    CHEERS TONES

thanks tony, i had a look at one and will probably go that way.

  8. hello

i reackon the starlo stix are better than the t curves i own both. i matched my with a twinpower 1000fb and it is a really nice lookin combo so what will you natch it to cheers

currently a symetre 2500 but might go for something smaller.

  9. cant beat the symetre,

about $140, smooth as silk and has the best line lay out of all the reels...

ive got 2 and i love them... however they are soon to be upgraded to twin powers

    CFD

CFD has hit is spot on. Don't look further than the symetre. It has a very slow spool oscillation which lays the line nice and evenly meaning less tangles and further casting distance with braid. I own two and couldn't be happier. Landed kings on the 2500 which has 15lbs of drag pressure. impressive and smooth.

  10. almost double!!! ok a couple more...you dirty dog...holding out on the egimax. I was using pink and blue yozuris and the squid were very skittish. still managed 2 squid and a cuttle. i think the green was the key. they immediately responded to it hitting the water.

  11. The new Starlo Litespin is a great value stick. I'm so impressed i bought 3 of them :1prop:

Some people compare the blank to a Miller Bream rod. Thats a pretty good wrap.

    Cheers

    Red

    that's the starlo pro litespin?

  12. With the Fishraider discount from Fishfinder bait and tackle, you can Pickup a Shimano T-Curve tournament spin rod and have change from $200

I had a look at one of these....the action is quite slow. Is this ok for sps? Thought it would be harder to twitch the baits.

    thanks Sammy

  13. I'm replacing my stick for the 3rd time :1badmood: and am considering the Finesse Raider; Starlo Pro; and Strudwick SicStik Pro. 7 foot and either 1-3kg or 2-4kg one piece. Looking for the best rod under $200. I use it mostly for throwing sps at flathead and bream with occasional light pelagic work too. So far I like the feel of the Strudwick...any suggestions?

    Cheers,

    Kit
