are they good eating
each to their own, but if they're cleaned properly and skinned i think they're quite good.

we've caught luderick in the lake since it's been open in the last couple of weeks. surprisingly good sizes too.

I'm trying to cast lighter weights with my calcutta 200. It's mated with a calcutta overhead rod rated at 3-6kg and it's 5'8". I'm using 5kg braid and throwing a 7g jig head with a 4" jerk bait. The rod seems short and doesn't allow for much distance. I'm not great with the overhead yet anyway but was getting further with 15g matal slices. Am I being too ambitious with the lighter weights on this outfit?
Cheers.

thanks for all the help.

so I'm hearing that braid might be better on the calcutta than fireline...any particular brands in 8 to 10lb?
-
I only use braid as backing on the overheads, then have 100 m to cast with. I found when pelting out lures that if it wasnt packed back on tight I had all kinds of issues. Seems to be ok on the baitcaster, but on the abu and slosh reels it was a nightmare. But at 8-10lbs you might be ok with straight bread and leader ..I was using 10 and 15kg braids, and another is spooled with 24kg. Also with no level wind was a pain on fingers on the big reels . I use either tuf line or platil ..didnt like fireline on the overheads - too wiry . Both those brands serve well.
Thanks for the info...
Just to clarify, you used braid for backing then 100 meters of what? mono? I'm using it on a calcutta 200.

Just seeing what people would recommend to use off the beach and rocks on a light overhead reel. I'm thinking of 8-10lb crystal fireline but was wondering if a true braid might be better suited? And if so which brands?
Cheers,

"I'm up for another test this summer at each's chosen location.
Hey, do I hear a FR social in the making LOL
Pete."
Ok...I'm willing to be beaten we'll have to make it happen.

Hi Pete,
I'm guessing that it wasn't an entirely fair test. If you were fishing your usual spot, then bait would probably be the way to go (ie. no structure & schools of bream cruising around). But if you moved to the flats nearby where the flatties lie in numbers then I'd say sps would pull more and more quickly. I landed 6 in 30 minutes the other week on sps. Maybe we go toe to toe one day this summer? And we each get to choose a location

is the noise sort of like a grinding type noise when the handel turns ? if so my symetre has been doing that for a while aswell and is driving me crazy
my 5 mo old symetre started doing the same???
-
nice work pete...hope to hear more of the same. might see you out there sometime. i'll keep an eye out for the stradic.
-
great first fish....may there be many more. well done.

Thanks guys.
Pete...yeah, the loose greenweed has been a problem in some areas.
She was caught up the back end, and I agree that the bream have been a little quiet.

Kept or released, if you don't mind me asking? That half-hour session sounds great, too!!!
Flattieman.
Released after a couple of pics...(I usually keep one or two but nothing under 40 or over 60)

Went out yesterday morning for a quick landbased session to try a new sp in anticipation of the flattie social (not sure if I can make it though). I had 30min before a meeting and managed to land 6 flatties, 4 over 40cm. No pics of that session.
Later that day me and a mate took the tinny out and I landed this one. She didn't want anything to do with the boat. Took me almost 10 minutes on 4lb fireline to convince her into the net and after a couple of shots I let her go.
She went 63.5cm and not sure on the weight. A new pb on lure. Needless to say I've found a new favourite sp.

you have catching kingies as your addiction....we have reading your reports. I don't wan't to read anymore but I can't help myself.
shamefully green with envy,

I'm not sure for that price range....I picked up a Pflueger 7ft soft plastic 2-5kg and love it. Retails at 200 but I bought mine for 100 and have seen them around for 125. very fast action and solid base (my brother just landed a 4kilo salmon on her last week) so gets a good hook up.

sounds like a good day out. very nice bream.
-
Very nice flattie! Well done.

didn't get an early start today and thought it was going to be slow after only 1 touch in half an hour. moved to a favourite spot and picked up 3 flatties in 4 casts. two were over 40cm and the other was undersize. a couple of casts later i picked up a 55cm long tom? hadn't caught one in the lake before and that's a pb for me. all fish were returned today (already had a good feed this week). what do you do with long toms?
hope to see you at the jew social.

bad luck pk.
it has been a little slow lately. i caught 4 flatties in 2 hours this morning. 2 legal size over near the pittwater bridge. still...a day on the lake is better than most.
it'll only get better from here on in.
-
.... and is it worth keeping one for the table ?
oh yeah...one of the best eating fish. I agree with sammy. Without a downrigger...burley the baitfish and set out a couple of livies. good luck fletcher.

Sorry no pics this time...
My dad and I were fishing for blackfish off a jetty in Pittwater during the high tide this morning. The action was slow until we berleyed. This produced two nice fish of about 32 and 38cm. The 38cm blackfish is a pb for me.
Anyway...I was being lazy and let the blackfish rod lay on the jetty while I flicked around for some bream or flatties. Had a hit but came off then a bit later hooked what I though was a big flattie as it started just cruising slowly to the left. I yelled, "I'm gonnna need the net," then all hell broke lose as the approx 60cm sambo went flying into the air and then off towards the moorings. I tighened the drag as much as I dared and my 4lb fireline was still screaming of the symetre 2500. The 7ft pflueger flickstick was bent over double for what dad reckons was 15 min as I tried to gain line. The fish made 4 good runs and 3 jumps before it threw the hook 2 meters from the jetty and 6inches from the net. Left me shaking. At least I had a witness.
At least I know my knots are good.

Saqa's very generous prize is too tempting. I'm in. Landbased at Clifton unless someone wants a deckie for part or all of the day. Looking forward to meeting some fellow raiders and hopefully catching my first non-charter kingy.
