  1. Hahaha...

Hey man! It's tough to say, you could be doing everything right and still not catch...

Perhaps your gutter wasn't as deep of your cast distance not as far. Maybe his sinker held bottom better, there are a range of possible differences.

I'll see what I'm doing this weekend if I can't find a spot on a boat at the social and maybe we can fish a beach.

I'm unfamiliar with east coast beaches but could give it a try

  2. Hi JD

As promise I send the end of my fishing in Maroubra.

I'm still there but for 5 hours I cacth only a flathead.

    I don't know so upset

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Some nights are on my friends,

    some nights are not.

I spent all last night in the freezing cold with wet socks trying to catch squid and crabs in the harbour.

    I got 1 blue swimmer.

This is just how fishing is sometimes

  3. I felt really horrible.

The first time it happened I upped the hook size. The second time, I upped the hook size again but didn't catch anything else that night.

The second whiting didn't swim away as fast as the first. I didn't think about holding the rod and striking or switching hook type....

I had two lines out. One with a squid head on it, the other had small baits for bream/whiting etc.

  4. nice seesion Will some great jewwie bait there!!!

    Regards,

    Nathan

I remember you telling me to get squid!

I preserved them like you said.

Bit of salt water, in the freezer...

I'm starting to get hungry and feel like squid though haha

  5. Sounds like a fun session. That is the best thing to do with gut hooked fish. Trying to remove the hook from a gut hooked fish can often lead to death and even more so with whiting as i find them to be quite a fragile fish.

Yeah, I upsized the hook in efforts to prevent this but didn't get any more hook ups. Watching the rod bend is fun enough :)

  6. Hey raiders.

After a lot of deliberation about the weather this weekend, throughout the week, I had already decided to stay in, stay warm. Play with some new toys from the tackle shop.

During work on Saturday an old mate called me up to head to either hen and chicken bay or balls point from the land...

We couldn't decide so we both flipped a coin, heads hen and chicken, tails balls point.

We both sent photos of tails. Finished work at 7:30 near drummoyne, my gear was in my car so stopped by a local tackle shop for some pillies and squid.

My mate met me there and got some prawns.

We were at the water by 9:00...

It was easier to rig up my bream set up: 1-3 kg graphite rod, stradic 3000, 10 lb braid, running ball sinker to swivel to 1 m shock leader 15 lb with a long shank hook, peeled prawn as bait.

As soon as I put it in the rod holder, it starts getting picked at. Nothing big. So I start setting up the bigger outfit

6-10 kg rod, stradic 5000, 20 lb braid (patternoster, double snelled hooks, star sinker) squid.

As soon as I tie up my first rod buckles and I miss the hookup.

This happened about 3 times until finally I'm landing a small 23 cm snapper.

Finally get both lines in the water.

My mate had landed about 3 blue swimmers that constantly grabbed his squid.

2 of the swimmers were keepers but as soon as he pulled them up, the action died. Being superstitious and all, we out them back and the rods started firing again.

No keepers but some good fun.

At about 3 am we start walking back to the car... There were so many baitfish trapped in runout tidal pools it was pretty incredible. Then we saw it. 4 squid sitting at the opening to a baitfish pool feasting on thes baitfish...

I frantically tried to tie up a squid jig, had to do a double uni knot whilst dropping all my packed gear on the ground. My mate calls for the net, after a few attempts, we are now both ankle deep in FREEZING water, shoes wet.

Finally he bags one, then a second. I finally get a squid jig out and on my third retrieve I've got about three squid chasing...

A baby one grabs my jig and my mate bags a third with the net...

Also was surprised to get an almost legal whiting...

PS. What's the accepted method when it comes to swallowed hooks? Both whiting I caught that night had swallowed my long shanks. I cut the line and let them go as I thought it would do the least damage.

    Neither of them were bleeding

  7. If you're fishing from rocks I strongly suggest several things.

Firstly, you will need to get a PFD, life vest. Even if the water is glassy, a freak slip into the water can be bad.

Secondly, get some rock fishing shoes, with cleats or spikes.

Thirdly, don't fish alone. Go with a friend.

Finally, don't just go onto the rocks, sit and watch the swell for at least a good 30 minutes. Time the waves and the hight, watch for wind conditions, see what other fishos are doing.

    Safety first mate.

  8. Here is the link to the dpi website.....

    http://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/fishing/recreational/fishing-rules-and-regs

I think there are rules on the amount of cunjivoi you can collect.,

Targeting salmon from the beach would work with any fresh strips of fish on a gang hook. I've never thrown sp's or lures at night. Sorry can't help there.

A good option for you would be to buy some whole mullet from a fish shop and strip bait it. Very cheap atm. Also collecting beach worms would be the go to bait this time of year for winter bream and jew. Off the stones, depending what you are targeting, bread is as good as anything! Even cheaper to make your own dough!

Life jackets you want a PDF type1. You can get them pretty cheap and very comfortable these days.

    Hope that helps!

    Cheers scratchie!!!

    THANKS!

  9. Hi budzsta,

Collecting bait is all about what you are targeting! There's some great advice above and some good options for a variety of fish!

Sp's and hard bodies are certainly another option and are reusable in most cases. It's also a very active way of fishing. So it maybe worth the effort to research that area of fishing! When starting out I would recommend targeting Flatty first and you'll be surprised by some of your bycatch.

Don't be afraid to ask questions on sp fishing either!

    Cheers scratchie!!!

    Hey Scratchie!

Considering winter is coming up full speed. I think I will be spending many nights at the beach targetting Salmon and other winter fish.

Do Sp's and lures work at night?

I also want to get into rock fishing but just waiting for some mates to finish with exams as solo fishing from rocks isn't advised.

I think I will be okay getting bait off the rocks.

I guess I have two questions,

Are there limitations to what I can take from the rocks? I could look this up obviously.

Also, with PFD's does anyone know of some good ones?

    Cheers!

    Will (aka Budz)

  10. Thanks everyone for the comments!

Beginner showed me the art of chicken and Parmisan the other night. I was actually impressed by how frequently he was getting hookups whilst my pillie cubes remained untouched.

I shall invest in a nipper pump asap and start salting and freezing my by catches.

I'll probably need a dedicated freezer haha

  11. I'm sure most of the people on here are similar to me.

You walk into a tackle shop to buy some bait, walk out with new leader, hooks, a new rod, burley and bait.

So to get around this problem of mine, I wanted to start catching my own bait.

Do any raiders do this and what do the recommend?

After searching the forums I've seen mullet, poddy mullet, yakkas, beach worms, aus salmon and of course squid.

If these are the main ones then I can just read older posts but if there are other options id be interested to hear some pointers :)

I haven't learned the fine art of sp's as yet :(
