  1. It was a very nice evening. Scratchie was true to his word on the whiting but I was very disappointed to not catch the 26kg jewie he had promised..... Next time. Thanks for your hospitality mate. There is a box in my car that belongs to you so send me your address and I'll drop it off. Also thanks for not being a serial killer or internet trawling rapist. My wife was glad I came home.
  2. Love your work Dean. Good to see some father - son bonding with the trout too. I'm trying to get my old man out there for some action but he is too "busy" while another weekend passes by. What size reel and rod are you using? I've been using a 2500 Daiwa spin reel with 2-4kg rod but am thinking of getting a smaller lighter combo. Any recommendations? Good report and photography too. Well done. Adam
  3. Great work on the Jewies. They are a great catch at any size. Definitely not kilograms though. I can tell because your smiles would be wider with a 10.5kg jew!
  4. Awesome report. Stories like that are what it's all about, and photos a pro would be proud of! Posts like that have inspired my recent splurge on fly gear. Now I just need to learn how to cast..... Well done to you both.
  5. Hi All, During a recent deer hunting trip in NE Vistoria I took the spinning gear and some celtas and tassie devils to have a go for a trout in the beautiful Mitta Mitta River. After walking up the river for 5 minutes I'd caught my first Rainbow in about 15 years and needless to say I spent most of the rest of the trip fishing. The freshwater bug has bitten and I feel my destiny now is to learn to fly fish. I have purchased a fly reel and am trying to workout what rod to get. So, I figured there was no point in seeing good fishing / exploring opportunities go to waste while i gear up so did a trip to TCD with the spinning gear yesterday. It was hard work! Not a rise was seen all day (we left at 1pm), but after covering some ground I shot my longst cast for a while across a small bay at some flooded bush structure. I let the Tassie sink and then started a dead slow retrieve followed by a fast retrive burst for a few seconds then slow again. On the second speed retrieve burst i felt a strike and the rod buckled over. The fish went nuts with numerous jumps and drag tearing runs. I walked back up the bank and beached my best trout to date, a beautiful Rainbow of 40cm. I was stoked. After a couple of photos I put the fish back in and waited for it to kick off, instead it turned belly up and floated. I spent ten solid minutes trying to revive it to no avail. Disappointed at the failed release the trout came home for dinner. There were quite a few guys out there fishing lures and fly. Of the guys we spoke to only one other bloke had success and that was on a similar tassie to the one I had success with. I did see a couple of injured fingerlings and after talking to one of the other blokes he confirmed fisheries had just done a new release. I'm looking forward to learning the art of fly fishing and hitting the sweet water again. Photo tomorrow!
  6. Use- general purpose medium weight. bottom bashing reef, trolling, cast & retrieve, jigging. For chasing snapper, Jew, kings, dollies. Casting from boat at structure etc. I have a 2000 spinner for lighter applications.
  7. Yeah, could be a loose line issue where I have taken up slack with minimal resistance. The resulting tangles are severe! I saw that Finn do a anti tangle braid. Thanks for the recommendation.
  8. Can anyone recommend a 30lb braid that doesn't tangle easily during casting in wind? I have had to cut tangles out of my current spool to the point where I am now back to the mono backing after a big cast. Are there any braids more resistant to tangles than others? I need to respool my 4500 spin reel. Thanks for your advice.
  9. Well done on the Spotty. One for the photo album for sure. Believe it or not there are plenty of Spanish Mackeral getting about off Sydney beaches at the moment too. Taking one of them off Sydney would be awesome. I'm trying hard, but only getting bonito & kings. Hopefully my 30lb gear can handle one.
  10. Thanks guys, that makes sense. Should I also be running a heavier leader?
  11. I was running 30lb braid with 20lb leader on a 4500 Okuma Raw spinner. I was bouncing a 7 inch jerk shad for Jew or snapper.
  12. I lost a good fish this morning after he took enough line to get back to the bottom where he bust me off on the reef. How do I determine how tight to set my drag? Had I played him harder he probably would have ended up on tonights menu. Same happened last week when fishing my lighter gear too. Advice appreciated.
  13. It's amazing the things you see at times. I've seen lion fish on sow & pigs, blue barred parrots off blue fish, mangrove jack off the bower, thrasher shark off north head, marlin at the spit at fingal bay, mud crab from the bower, and photos of a barra west of syd harbor bridge. So a dolly between the heads works for me. Well done.
  14. Wow! That is a cracking fish for Sydney. Well done.
  15. Hi Guys, I bought a daiwa Advantage 2000a on the weekend and had it spooled with 6lb spiderwire. Im not used to using light gear and found that using the usual knots the line was breaking easily. I guess that goes with the territory. It came with a spare spool, so what weight line would you recommend for flatties, snapper, little bonnies and kings? I have a 2-4kg and a 4-6kg rod for this real. I'm thinking light rod for with 6lb for bream & whiting, and 4-6kg rod for other spool for the flatties, snapper etc All for soft plastic work. Advice appreciated. Adam
