    Problem with the local store prices is the overhead they have to incur. Once the greedy landlords lower their rental fee then you'll see more competitive prices in the stores.

    Hopefully this happens soon so i can think about selling fishing gear at my store :D

    Mate it was in a Vietnamese restaraunt about this time of year. I can't remember the name of the restaraunt or where it was exactly but it was around Fairfield somewhere, I had beef noodle soup and I remember liking it. :)

    Ahh Fairfield, the place has grown dramatically in regards to multicultural cuisine.

    Good luck with the fish cakes and if you are feeling in the need for a soup that i rate better than Tom Yum (Thai Hot/Sour and Spicy Soup) then give Canh Chau Ga a go. Served with Vermicelli, great winter warmer and light on the stomach so you can eat fish without the loaded heavy belly syndrome :D

    Off The Sand

    Yeah after dark, high tide was around 9.30 so I was on the sand an hour before that. The beach is in Wollongong, if you want the name let me know and i'd be happy to send you a PM.

    You didn't get drenched last night in the rain? Was down there and the rain was too heavy to get out of the car. Though I was over Port Kembla way at MM.

    I tried Vietnamese food once when I was visiting Sydney and thought it had a very unique flavour that I was quite unaccustomed to. In saying that I found it enjoyable and look forward to giving it a try myself. Thanks for the recipe.

    Can i ask which dish you tried and which restaurant? There are alot of so called Vietnamese food places operated by the chinese which skewers the flavour :)

    Winter is here so it's time for Pho (beef noodle soup) or Canh Chau (sweet and sour soup where fish heads are used to make the stock) MmM gotta go get me some Salmon to make stock. :D

    yeah thats the site. have you ever sent braid to him lungfai??

    heh I was going to send him a length of the braid my cousin from Vietnam sent me to use but when i cut it up it turned out to be everyday sewing thread :D

    The Godkids got their 5 dollar fishing combo spooled with the stuff :banana:

    Edit : Ohh and my braid of choice has been Sufix 832, nice casting, strength is so so and is nice and thin.

    Fish Cakes (Aussie Salmon)

    I prefer the Vietnamese Fish Cakes over the Thai ones.

    RECIPES

    Makes 4 (10cm diameter x 2 cm thick)

    INGREDIENTS

    - 500g fish, cut into cubes, deep cold chilled

    - 1 tbsp fish sauce

    - ½ tbsp olive oil

    - ½ tbsp sugar

    - 1 small shallot, finely minced

    - ½ tbsp tapioca starch

    - ½ tbsp corn starch

    - ½ tsp salt

    - ½ tsp freshly ground pepper

    - 2 stalks spring onions, white part only, finely sliced

    - Vegetable oil for deep frying

    FOR DIPPING SAUCE

    - Fish sauce

    - 1-2 fresh bird eyes chilli, chopped

    - Lime wedges

    INSTRUCTION

    1. Either use mortar and pestle or simply a food processor. Slowly put fish cubes into food processor to grind into paste.

    2. Mix fish paste with fish sauce, olive oil, sugar, minced shallot, tapioca starch, corn starch, salt, ground pepper, spring onions. Continue to grind until the paste become in-cooperated.

    3. Transfer fish paste into a bowl, cover with cling film, then place in freezer to chill for 2-3 hours.

    4. Take fish paste out of the freezer, transfer into a stand mixer bowl, use batter blade to beat fish paste until it becomes smooth and quite elastic, approximately 5 minutes.

    5. Use oiled hands to form the fish paste into fish patties about 10cm in diameter and approximately 5cm thick, (for rough cutting you can use a 10cm cookie cutter or a ramekin).

    6. For fried fish cakes: Heat the oil in a large non-stick frying pan over medium heat. Add fish cakes and deep-fry both faces until golden brown

    7. For steamed fish cakes: Put fish cakes on steam for 20 minutes. Set aside to cool down.

    8. Serve warm with dipping sauce and cooked rice or use as main ingredient

    Also great on the BBQ, similar to Nem Noung in texture for those of you who have eaten Nem :)

    casting baits long distance

    Just watched a vid.

    Looks like the casting does not put pressure on the shield so it doesn't travel the correct way to dislodge the bait/hook. Once the sinker and shield hit the water the pressure of the water flowing the correct way along the shield forces is to travel along it's apex which lifts the casting line which in turn pushes the hook/bait off the nest.

    I wouldn't worry about the casting pressure but more the wind pressure but then again the g force of the hook loaded with bait would probably (well obviously it does as people have used it) keep the hook/bait sitting pretty in the nest until it hits the water.

    I'd prob just run a paternoster rig with it.

    Edit : Just saw the username....why don't you just teleport the bait and line to your desired spot? :P

    First ever caught and cooked blue swimmer crabs

    Yeah i notice that the circles latch around their claws/legs and don't let go, now i just got to figure out the feel of a crab tugging my bait to a fish nibbling it so i know if i should play the fish for fun or concentrate and make sure i don't break a claw/leg.

    Fish i am more than happy to lose but when it comes to crabs, those buggers will never be released by me....well as long as it is legal and doesn't have eggs :D

    The reel is all good and dandy for shore fishing for the larger species, really just comes down to your rod.

    How large are the Kingies? How big is your bait/lure?

    My KingFish setup for rock fishing is a 6000 reel paired with a 4-8kg spin rod as i fish for kicks and laughs not to take home. You could go for a sturdier rod but then you become stuck with what style of fishing you do. When i do target kings off the rocks i just do the live bait under a balloon and throw it out by hand or dead bait under a float with a float which i can then cast. If the Kings ain't a biting i can switch it up to spin for the other pelagics or toss a squid jig around (bit of an overkill for the squidding though).

    That being said the 6000 reel has not been touched of late and the 2500 and 4000 (stradic) with a 2-5kg rod is my usual weapon of choice for all the fishing i do.

    Im avoiding buying more jigs until i sort a better storage solution for my day trips. I carry as little as possible with me on trips which is causing my jigs damage. Only using a small rapala tackle sling.

    PVC pipes cut to length with caps makes for great squid jig storage/transport for us light tackle carrying peeps :)
