Hey all - am thinking of buying a hand held GPS. Have checked out the options and Garmin and Lowrance seem to be the best value. Can any body out there shed any further light on this - maybe someone has an idea which of these is the most user friendly or which one NOT to go for. Any feedback will be appreciated.
  2. Basically because the jetty is quite narrow and is essentially one long conveyer belt to carry the sugar out to the waiting tankers. The jetty has to be this long to allow adequate water depth for the large ships. Keep in mind that you are on the inside of the Barrier Reef. Also, there are some veeerry large fish under where you can fish which is right onshore. Water level drops right off from the beach into about 10 - 15 mtrs, but remember that the tides up there, particularly in the warmer months, can have at least a 2.5 mtr fluctuation. Virtually anything can be caught there- Mangrove Jacks, huuuge bream I mean 45cm stuff ( I got one last September) as well as GT's, Barra etc, but at low tide you have a long haul up from the water with your catch, hence the heavy duty gear requirements. My mate owns a pub just on the road in to Lucinda at a place called Macnade. You have to go past it to get to the jetty about 5k's away. It's calle dthe Lion Hotel and his name is Jonathon Roberts. Pop in for a coldie and view some of the locals- they're rather interesting the people up there!!
  3. Sounds like a good day out. By the way, where's the Valiant - Is it close enough in to line up with landmarks or do I have to have a GPS to locate? (Don't have GPS at this stage). Any tips would help a poor old tinny owner like me.
  4. yeah well, the real truth is that I resigned my job last week and start the new one next Monday, so I thought maybe a sickie was in order. Everybody I spoke to agreed - you know, the wife, the mates etc !!
  5. Hi all. First time on the blocks so to speak. Went out yesterday but couldn't get out past the heads- dead set there was almost surf coming thru - swell about 3 -4 mtrs. Bugger that I says to myself , manly bay it is for the drift. Lots of u/size snapper - no flatties and a couple of Ray Sharks, little puppies they are. getting bored motored over to Dobroyd for a drift past the cardinals - 3 rods set of varying sizes and rigs. Just in the throws of rebaiting the small rod and off goes the graphite!! Bloody thing peeled off about 150 mtrs of braid before I got it out of the rod holder - went like an F111 on afterburner!! Definately not a noah, more likely a cranky hoodlum. Managed to turn him about 5 or 6 times before he really got the sh**s and busted my leader. Whatever it was it was very fast. Have never encountered that sort of speed before and I have caught quite a few kingies mostly rats and the very odd bandit. Any thoughts on whatever else it could be? Are there still Sambos or Amberjacks in the harbour?? Ended the day with bugger all but there was the excitement of that hook up. Makes the outing worthwhile. Swell coming back in toward Balmoral in the arvo was dead set scary and running in at about 20 knots - I was planing just to stay on the back of the swell. That's it for now. Any ideas on what I might have hooked would be welcome.
