  1. Thanks, Scratchie, will put up what happens at Durras for sure, and hope to add to the knowledge base here. Cheers. Jim
  2. Hi everybody, Jim's the name, I live in Sylvania and I'm mainly interested in Blackfish (and Pigs, but not much luck with them). I'm land-based and usually fish out at Kurnell, I stay away from the low ledges though. Started fishing in England back in the 1960's - freshwater. So I'm everso old, but still keen. A very big thank you to the contributors who have so freely shared their knowledge. Off to North Durras for four days next week. Fingers crossed that the fishing gods smile on my efforts. Tight lines all. Jim
  3. Hey, Hooked up, good advice, thanks. Leader and heavier jig-heads on list for tomorrow. Jewfish never crossed my mind !
  4. Hi everybody, I usually fish at Kurnell but a broken alvey (aaarghhh!) kept me away today. Rather than waste my time washing the car/paying bills etc etc I decided to head to a tiny local reserve where a small stream runs into Geroges River on the southern side, just a bit west of Captain Cook bridge. At low tide there are quite extensive sand flats there, often seen people digging bait/pumping nippers and I've often thought - got to be fish there at some stage of the tide. Abt high tide when I got there and quite a strong nor-easter. Water the colour of tea and quite warm. Decided this was the time to chuck some SPs around. Hardly ideal kit: 11 ft Bruce&Walker "avon style" rod - not exactly the most sensitive tip but plenty (too much!) of power throughout the action, Shimano st 4000fa, 6 lb fluro strait through to a 100mm squidgy wriggler w/2grm jig head. Waded out and heaved the SP 20 meters - it was windy, honest. Did this quite a few times. Noticed some chopper tailor swimming within arms reach and took heart from this. Also noticed some small taps - like the SP was moving over some stones/gravel I thought, but maybe they were bites ? On one of the retrieves there were a couple of taps and a bit of a rattle so I lifted the rod and hooked up into something very solid. It was the classic "damn I'm snagged up" until the first head shake. I looked up at the rod and I could see that the thing was almost in a hoop and knew that I was into a pretty decent fish. It didn't last long. Like a fool with no hands I kept too much pressure on and, another schoolboy error, did not have the clutch properly set. It gave a few metres of line then, bye-bye fish, hook pulled away. Gah ! What do you think, Fishraiders - Flathead ? So, an interesting and enlightening 2 hours. I'm heading back for another session soon.
  5. Hi Barnzey and luderick -angler, thanks for this very helpful info. Guess I need a dedicated rig for them - don't think my BF set-up would cope ! Plenty of spots at Kurnell consist of just the environment you describe. Will let you know how I get on. Cheers.
  6. Hi fellow raiders, caught my first Pig the other day at Kurnell. Fishing for BF at the time. Pig was only small - 25cms, but good fun. Bait was cabbage. There must be bigger ones there, but how do I get them ? Some pointers would be very welcome. Cheers
  7. Hi all, very pleased to be part of a great forum. Haven't fished much over the past few years, but picking up the traces again now I have more time. I'm land based and concentrating on Blackfish but I'm going to give pigs and bream a go later on this year. I live quite near Kurnell/Botany Bay/Georges River but almost entirely fish at Kurnell. Not much experience with Blackfish, some great tips here have really helped me catch - thanks to Luderick Angler and others for some very helpful info. Cheers
  8. Hey, hawkesbass, thanks for the welcome, and the tip re burley. Didn't get back to Yena on the 10th, but went back for a session today (9.45-12.30). Bottom of the tide this time. Picked up 3 Blackfish - biggest was abt 30cms. All returned. Gee, they went hard. Missed a couple of bites and bumped a fish at my feet.I see what you mean by "timid and cautious" - what with the chop and slop it was difficult to see bites, I'm certain I missed more than I saw. Great fun, hope to get back there tomorrow. Cheers
  9. Hallo everybody, I'm new to this forum and relatively new to fishing for luderick. Here goes with my "report". Fished Yena today 9.30-11.15. High tide was abt 9.40. Not much swell. Used fixed float fished at 3 mts or so, 8lb mainline, 6lb trace. size 8 hook, cabbage for bait. Much to my supprise I picked up 2 fish, 1 at aprox 10.00, the other at 10.15. Abt 22-23 cms repectively. Beautiful plump little fish in excellent condition, they went back. Good job they were small, I got into an awful mess with the alvey - winding line 'round the handles ! There were a few people abt but nobody was catching. Spoke to some young blokes fishing for pigs (nothing doing) who said they had spearfished there over the w/end and seen a lot of luderick. Back there tomorrow for a longer session - weather permitting. Hope this is of some use, Im pretty inexperienced, and if I can catch... Thanks for all the tips - they helped reignite my interest.
