  1. Scratchie mate, sounds awesome. Is that set up to heavy to just chuck in around the hacking from the land? Hope you have some good luck with it mate!
  2. Hey fishos, At the moment I have a sienna 2500 paired with a catana which I use for SP, squidding etc. I'm thinking it might be time to upgrade to some heavier gear, my goal is to get some kingies and some larger fish then I've been getting in the hacking from the land, a kayak and hopefully eventually a boat. My issue is, I've never caught any decent fish and have little experience and knowledge when it comes to this. I've had a chat to a few people and have been recommended to get a thunnus 8000 with 50 pound braid. What do you guys recommend? I know it all depends on what I'm will to spend and I'm not to sure, I don't wanna break the bank but I know there is no point getting something that won't be good enough, and upgrading sooner then later? Thanks guys, any advise will be appreciated.
  3. Yea true fish-on, thanks Hull mate, I had them alive until I got home and they were only in the freezer for 20 or so minutes. Not long enough to change the flavour, just enough to make spiking them more humane.
  4. Thanks guys was a great feed and I caught them on a line, they went for my pilchards from the bottom, on fairly low tide.
  5. With all this beautiful weather we have been blessed with recently, i couldn't help but go for a fish in the hacking, just after midday. Being my lazy self and having old frozen pilchards in the freezer, they were my bait of choice. Unfortunately with dozens of boats driving past i was unable to nab any squid (losing two yamashita jigs), whilst losing the only fish i hooked on the rocks which looked like a bream, forcing me to walk home with only two blue swimmer crabs. The crab were thrown in the freezer, as soon as i stepped foot in the front door, to numb their senses, while i looked up how to prep my crab. After killing the crab humanely, it was easy to prep the crab with some help from youtube. The crab was tossed in a wok with vegetable oil, garlic, chilli, oyster sauce, soy, sugar, butter and black pepper corns and if i were to say so myself, it was so flavoursome and possibly the best crab I've ever eaten (slight hint of bias). All in all an awesome feed from an unproductive but good day fishing.
  6. Awesome tips thanks, will defiantly give it a go at night with the lights for some squid and flattys Cheers
  7. Thanks heaps fragmeister, I'll give it a go soon for sure most likely Tuesday so let's hope the weather is good. Cheers mate
  8. Hey guys I'm planning on going fishing and squidding with some light line in kurnell. I normally go off the land around the hacking, last minute decisions is taking us to kurnell this arvo. Probably won't get any tips before we leave but any tips will help us for the next time. Cheers guys, Appreciate it. Nelson
  9. Thanks everyone, awesome tips. We will get onto it and give it a go. Regards Nelson
  10. Awesome Bruce, thanks mate I'll give it a go. I thought for flatty it's best to chuck it out over the drop offs? Never thought about how pumping yabbies turns up food, very good point. Mainabar is in the port hacking.
  11. Woke up at 7 this morning with my brother, planning to get straight on the water with our 2 man kayak. We ended up reaching mainabar by 8:20ish and pumped all our yabbies in 30 mins Started fishing from the east most beach facing easy but the water was moving to much, do we hoped backed in the kayak and paddled a bit further west and fished facing north. In a few hours I had caught one tiny flatty and my brother was on the big 0 We ended up moving into burraneer bay and only catching some tiny snapper. Had two catana rods with light set ups ( braid and fluro with 1/8th jigs) mainly with SPs We also had a crappy rod set up with a long shank hook for the yabbies... There is probably a long list, but what did we do wrong and can I have any tips?!?!? Thanks guys
  12. Good work mate My goal is to land a kingy, I've landed some squid and now wanna use them as bait and see if I can land one. Congrats!
  13. Tulz I'm keen to use them to try and get kingies but I think I only have too light set ups!!
  14. Hey guys it was a 10g very multicolored with orange on the bottom on blue red and green through the rest. I can put up a photo but I'm just not sure how to on my iPhone. Sorry hope that helps haha Was such an awesome feeling, went for an hour paddle yesterday and caught one as well
  15. Having only caught 1 squid previously and lrecently spending money on a shimano catana 3-5 kg with a sienna 2500, spooling braided line and flurocarbon leader, I thought I would buy myself a yamashita 2.5 squid rig. I borrowed my brothers girlfriends kayak and got on the water around mid day Saturday: the skys were cloudy and there was a constant drizzle of rain but the water was glass. I headed out towards main bar catching a bream, baby snapper and a tiny unknown rockfish on squid before I thought id wet the new rig at the end if burraneer headland. On my first cast I waited 2 seconds and I was on!! Pulled in a big green eye. 2nd cast, i flicked the rod a few times and I was on again, same for my 3rd cast. I ended up spending an hour and a half before I had to leave and I landed 8 squid which fed the family for the night! After skinning them and cutting them up, I marinated them in chilli , olive oil, garlic and lemon before frying them! They definitely tasted better knowing I caught them myself! Was an awesome experience.
  16. Thanks for the support guys! I'm in a wheel chair at the moment from a few (6) operations an my ankles and feet. So I'll wet my line and report back soon enough!
  17. Went down to carss park today for a fish with my new soft plastic set up. This was my second fishing session on my new set up which I bought yesterday and only managed a quick unsuccessful fish around midday at low tide because I was to excited to wait. Today I fished the end of run in and the start of run out tide during the morning. I managed to hook on to one flatty just under legal size, around 33cms. Sorry I didn't get any good photos , I was so excited to finally catch one though!! My new set up is a shimano catana 6'6" 3-5kg rod, paired with a sienna 2500 reel. 8lb braid with a 7lb fluro leader and I was using an 1/8th jighead and a 3 inch minnow SP. Very happy
  18. Hey guys Went to tackle world today to get my gear and I told them I was looking at either the trion or catana at 7ft 2-4kgs with the 2500 sienna Ended up having a combo deal on for the catana and sienna so I grabbed it all, my mrs was telling me to hurry because she had to be somewhere. Turns out the reel is a 6'6" 3-5kg catana. I'm wheelchair bound at the moment so couldn't just go back in. I really had my heart set on the stats you guys were telling me before. I'm just curious if this will affect my fishing much? I can go back and pay $10 more for a 7'3" 3-5 or can discuss other options with them so that I can get the 7ft 2-4. In your opinion what should I do and will this rod not be as good?

  20. Alright sweet , I've pretty much decided on a 7ft Pflueger Trion 2-4kgs rod and to pair it up with a Sienna 2500. I was also thinking 4lb braid, although would I have any issue with having that light gear? and probably a fluro 6 or 8lb leader. I was also wandering what weight jig head and size hooks I should be looking at and should I just start off with a few gulp SPs or something . Thanks for all the help guys. I've just had 6 operations on my feet and ankles and can't wait to go buy the new gear and try catching some fish. Cheers
  21. Awesome thanks, Would I have any issues fishing with 4lb braid? I was thinking I would be safer with 6-8lb?
  22. Awesome guys, really appreciate the help. I was thinking I might target flathead but still obviously want the ability to have a go at some others. How much would the Catana 7ft and sienna 2500 be roughly? I think I wouldn't mind spending between $200-$300 If it will get me some better quality gear. What do you guys feel about for my leader? Is it worth spending the extra money for fleuro or is it best to stick with mono? Really appreciate the help guys!
  23. Hey guys and girls, I always read the goss on fishraider but I don't normally write. I have finally decided to make the switch from bait to lures! And was wandering if I could grab any advice on what rod and reel I should be looking at. I will mainly be fishing in the port hacking river and possibly sometimes in the George's river. Any other tips will be more then appreciated. Regards, Dale
