  1. Hi My name is Steve and I live in Woonona. I am reasonably new to fishing (started properly Dec 2011 and my experience before moving to Wollongong's northern suburbs was limited to mullet creek and lake Illawarra(I was formerly from Berkeley). I usually spend every waking moment away from work on a rock ledge or beach, though recent reforms to my employer (RailCorp) will probably mean I have more time to fish than I would like.... If anyone is keen to go for a fish up Wollongong's northern suburbs feel free to let me know.
  2. Identical to the one I got last night!!! I was at the break wall yesterday morning and many were pulling in salmon and a few Bonito.... Unlike you my luck there was shocking but I got some good practice in I guess......Good stuff
  3. Ok, From what I could see... For the bonito they were using the rig in the diagram (in this topic). Seemed to be a float followed by 30 - 40 cms of line then a sinker shortly followed by the hooks (looked like number 6 size Mustad bait holders). Pilchards were used as bait. I did not see anyone casting lures or anything else. For my Salmon; I fished of Stanwell Pk beach. Was a last minute thing at around 7ish last night I decided to head out. I used only 30lb line (compared to the 35 - 40 I had been using). Found this casts easier. I used a Paternoster set up. Basically I by a number 4 pyramid sinker at the bottom and tied in two arms or which I then fixed gang hooks to. Pilchards were the bait I used. I cast out about 15 - 20 meters from he shore (not very far) and barely had enough time to put the rod in the holder before it was bending like crazy. Many others were hooking up and not just in one spot it was all across the beach front. Despite he many warnings about how foul they taste I tried it today........not something I will do again anytime soon though my dog enjoyed it. Same story as Rock Cale.....I just had to see why they were called old boots...Rock cale was by far the worst...
  4. Hi Guys, A pet hate of mine is getting pillies that literally melt of your hook before casting or during. I use gang hooks and single hook set ups and for the most part it works however some pilli batches I get are just shocking. Can anyone suggest good bait and where to get it from? I mainly use servo prawns (worked well for me thus far believe it or not), servo squid and pillies from fergos at fairymeadow (servo style). I have tried them from ait shops but they still seem flimsy Some say fish markets are best as the fish are fresh rather than frozen like servo prawns or pillies. Thanks El Feroz
  5. Thanks for the tips guys!! I may have missed out on that Bonito I was after but I did get my first Sambo (already loaded into my signature). On the topic of Bonitos, some guys were catching a few at the break wall this morning around 0800 - 0900. Thanks again guys, if it weren't for the good advice I would not have caught the bugger.
  6. The large bream may be my one and only claim to fame depending on how I handle this surface fishing at Port. If you ever fish around Bulli/Woonona let me know and I will show/tell you where I get them. Its one of those spots that if you haven't got a few within the first 10 minutes then they are not there and yes they are big ones. I have never caught one under 40 cms.
  7. Can you still access the break wall on the coal terminal side? or is it locked off?
  8. I mainly fish the bottom. I have recently taken an interest in the surface and want to try it out at Port. I am interested in learning how to get the bigger more challenging fish rather. I normally fish at Sandon Point,MCauleys and behind Bulli surfclub.
  9. Hi Guys, Having fished the break wall int the with limited success I am planning to to hill 60. Is there a "preferred" side or spot there or is it pretty much ok in general regardless? Regarding the break wall is there a better side to fish from there (I mean closer to the coal terminal or closer to maritime services office)? Looking to hit it up early Friday or Saturday morning and could to with a heads up. Thanks El Feroz
  10. Ill try the southern break wall or of the rocks nearby. Feel free to say g day if anyone sees me...Ill be the slightly awkward looking guy trying to implement all this new found knowledge
  11. Thanks guys! I Really appreciate all the information you have given me. I am looking to try this out this Saturday morning at Port Kembla, Bulli or Stanwell Park beaches.
  12. Hi Guys, Have been fortunate enough to move to Woonona (north or Wollongong) recently and have been introduced the the wonderful art of rock/beach fishing. Prior to this my fishing experience was totally within lake Illawarra and mullet creek (dont laugh). So far at my "spot" I have been able to catch black fish, bream (mostly over 45 cms), some form of cod (olive with blue spots)and the odd shark. It has taken me from Jan this year to pick it all up but still having fun learning. I was fishing with some tourists recently who went on a Bonito and salmon catching spree. I think between them they all would have pulled about 30 fish. I would like to hook a few up myself but have thus far been unsuccessful ( despite casting within a one metre radius of their lines). Can anyone give me some basic hints on types of rigs, lures, and methods to catch Aust salmon and in particular Bonito? Fishing at Sandon Point it is not uncommon to see schools of salmon and Bonito just off the reef in the swell however I still struggle to land them. Heavy sinkers equals stuck on rocks and reef whilst a light set up is harder for me to cast out to them. Thanks in advance for your help! El Feroz
