  1. We didn't make it out, we were determined but it was way too rough when we got to the heads, would have been too uncomfortable. So we just fished the harbour around manly for a couple of hours, anchored up near the Dunny Rolls as I call them. Got 2 flathead, 3lb and 10lb, 2 trevally around 3lb and few undersized reds and flounder. Let the big flattie go, I have some pics will post them up tomorrow.
  2. We are heading out tomorrow will let everyone know how we go.
  3. Yeah there are everywhere, we have putting the lures in as soon we leave Sydney Heads and have hooked up as close as half a mile out. We got a 15lb fish and about 5 around 6lb in last the 2 weeks and stacks of smaller ones. We found the bigger dollies are not right on the fads but up to 1 mile or more around the fads. The smaller fish are sitting right under the fads and there are heaps of them. Peter
  4. hey Tailor, definitely the camera had something to do with it, I can see my shirt is also more bluer, its normally a dark navy color.
  5. Hey Tailor, could just be our camera, it might have some sort of auto color correction set on it The kingy was a dark royal blue, but a really nice blue, I must admit even in real life it was an electric kind of blue just a thought maybe they change color a bit depending on the water type. i.e. they are darker and duller in the harbour and bluer and brighter in the ocean to match the water type, adapting to suit the environment kind of thing peter
  6. hey, we vary our troll speed to suit the conditions, if its really choppy we go around 5-6 knots, if its smooth around 7-8 knots. The best thing to do is just watch lures and then determine, you want the lures popping and smoking. In choppy water they seem to do that at a slower speed. Also your electronics will be out when you are tolling in rough conditions, because your electronics will give you a SOG (speed over ground) reading, but I would assume that SOG is a flat surface. So in choppy, rough conditions your sounder might be displaying 6 knots but in actually fact you are travelling at 8 - 9 knots because it calculates the boat travelling on a flat surface not a wavy one. So you're best bet is always is too look at the lures in the water and try to get a nice smooth, popping and smoking action. yeah pity about the marlin, but that's fishing, lots of small fish out there ATM and lots of bait, there will be more marlin in amongst them Great thing is they are pretty close in ATM. Will try again soon. Peter
  7. 1st trolling session of 2014, Kingies, Dollies, Marlin Strike – Sydney Offshore Hey Raiders, Happy New Year. First game fishing session of 2014, 3-1-2014 and we're off to good start. Arrived at Sydney Heads around 3pm and as you might have guessed by now we don't get up early, we sleep in and fish the afternoons. Water was a little choppy and only a small swell. Nice blue water around 22 degrees was only about half a mile out, so we put our lures straight in. Our spread consisted of four 6 inch Scent Blazer Nano Lure chains and one larger 10 inch purple lure for a marlin or something that’s interested in a bigger lure. The lures chains have been working really well, they look like small bait fish schools and get the fish biting, so why change. We headed north east towards the Whale FAD, when we got there, there were 2 boats casting lures around it so we kept a wide berth and just kept trolling NE. About 30 minutes later about half a mile from Manly Hydraulics we hooked up on nice Kingie, which went around 15-18lb. Kept trolling around the area and kept picking up kingies, all different sizes, 6lb, 4lb, 2lb and one small Dolphin Fish as well. It went quiet for a little while before a sprinkler (Stripped Marlin) showed up behind of the one lure chains, we hooked up and it peeled about 200 metres of line off before settling down. Only 2 of us on-board so I left the rod in the holder and I cleared the gear to get ready to back down on it, by the time gear was cleared unfortunately it had thrown the hook, still its bloody exciting. Just a tip, even if you trying to target big fish I would always run a small lure somewhere in your spread. In the last few weeks every fish we kept had it's stomach full of pilchards and small slimey mackerel, I am guessing the Marlin would be feeding on those baits at times as well. Quite often Marlin will take the smallest lure in the spread. Think about it, if you are hungry you going eat a big meal if you are not you will have a snack. You don’t know what the fish out have been eating, they could be full or famished. We kept trolling a little while longer and started trolling back towards Sydney Heads, we got 2 small dolphin fish on the way back. One was hooked only about 1 mile from Sydney Heads. Have a successful 2014 of fishing and if you would like to try Scent Blazer Lures for yourself you can get a 5 lure rigged pack which is ideal for Dolphin Fish and Small Marlin for only $99.99. Happyhook ups for 2014 Raiders! Peter Scent Blazer Lures Leaving Sydney Harbour for a afternoon trolling session. Lures we used. We’ve been running Scent Blazer trolling lure chains with great success. They look like a small school of bait fish, the pelagic having been striking them like crazy. Put pilchards inside the stinger lure of the trolling lure chain to make the stinger the most appetising of the 3 lures in the chain. Nice Yellowtail kingfish for the first fish of the day. Another nice kingie. Kingie caught on Scent Blazer trolling lure chain. Even the really small kingies couldn’t resist our Scent Blazer lures. Caught a couple of Dolphin Fish during our trolling session as well, only small but they always fun to catch.
  8. Hey Paul, on our last 3 or 4 trolling sessions, the blue water has started about half mile from Sydney Heads so we put the lures in as soon as we hit that blue water. We have been catching dollies trolling anywhere along the way to the fads as well as around the fads. Generally we hook the bigger dollies near the fads but not directly on them, up to mile around them. Most of the larger dollies we have caught over the years have not been near any fads. The biggest dolliie we got which went over 50lb we caught only a few miles east of Sydney Heads which wasn't near any fads and surprise, surprise it took the smallest lure in our spread. Basically as soon as you hit the clear warm blue water, put your lures in and start trolling your way to the fads, that way you are covering all the water along the way. We have caught some nice dollies and even marlin on the way to the fads. Actually the largest marlin we hooked off Sydney was almost exactly half way between the whale fad and the manly fad, it would have gone over 600-700lb. Peter

  10. Hey Morwong (Paikea), we have a special sponsors account on Fishraider that we pay an annual fee for which allows us to have banners on the site and place promotional links in our posts. So we do take advantage of that by explaining the techniques we use using Scent Blazer products to catch our fish and hopefully in that process sell a few a lures via our promotional links. We are happy to post reports on Fishraider every time we fish and we are honest in our reports, we have even posted on here quite a few times telling fishermen we caught nothing because lets face it that's fishing for you Even you have the best techniques and equipment if there are no fish out there, then there is no fish out there. However we feel that information is also useful to fishermen because it tells fishermen where not to fish and try another location because might have a better chance of coming across fish elsewhere. Hope this explains it, have a good NYE! Peter
  11. Hey Mackerel, postage is around $20 for Sydney metro. Yeah if want to come out some time let us know. We usually go out during the week when the conditions are suitable. My boat's at Cabarita, but I can pick up from Lavender Bay or Rushcutters Bay fuel wharf. Maybe sometime in Feb if thats cool. Most of Jan is pretty busy for me. Peter
  12. Hey Raiders, Couldn't resist one last afternoon trolling session for 2013, 30-12-2013. We arrived at Sydney Heads around 3pm. Water was pretty choppy with about 1.5-2 meter swell. Not great, but f*@k it, it wasn’t going to stop us. Water was really blue and around 21.5 degrees about half a mile out from Sydney Heads so put the lures in straight away and started trolling directly east. Our spread consisted of 6 inch and 8 inch Scent Blazer trolling lures loaded with pilchards inside the bait chamber to give them our trademark fishy taste! In our spread we ran 3 lure chains pretty close together so they look like small bait fish school and not very far behind the boat, around 15-20 meters back. First hook up on a small Dolphin fish in about 40 meters of water, only about 1 mile east from Sydney Heads. We kept trolling east into 100 meters of water and kept hooking up all the way. There were couple of double headers and one triple header on Dolphin Fish. The fish weren't very big, around 2-3lb average. We kept 2 fish around 5lb which were the biggest of the day The lure chains we used which consisted of 3 Scent Blazer Nano lures with pilchards loaded inside the bait chamber of the stinger lure. The Dolphin Fish were smashing them, we couldn’t keep them off the lures chains. An engine died on us on the way back so we limped back at 9 knots, we kept 2 lure chains all the way back and hooked nice sized tailor in Sydney Heads and another smaller one under the Harbour Bridge. Hope 2013 was good fishing year for everyone and if you would like to try Scent Blazer Lures for yourself you can get a 5 lure rigged pack which is ideal for Dolphin Fish and Small Marlin for only $99.99. Happy hook ups for 2014 Raiders! Peter Scent Blazer Lures Pretty rough, but it wasn’t going stop us! Lure chains, only put bait inside the stinger trolling lure, that’s the one you want the fish to strike, the other lures are there to make it look like a small school of bait fish. Double hook up on El Dorado! Multiple hook ups on Dolphin Fish the order of the day. 5lb Dolphin Fish. Found small whole pilchards inside the stomach of the Dolphin Fish we caught. We cut it up and put it inside the bait chamber of the Scent Blazer lures, can’t match the hatch any better than that. Tailor caught trolling at Sydney Heads.
  13. Hey Fishraiders, Headed out for a late afternoon trolling session yesterday of Sydney, 27-12-1013. Fuelled up and arrived at Sydney Heads around 4pm. Water was bit choppy but not much swell. We found 22 degree blue water about half a mile from Sydney Heads so we decided put the lures in straight away and started trolling directly east. Our spread consisted of 6 inch and 8 inch Scent Blazer trolling lures loaded with pilchards inside the bait chamber to give them that nice fishy taste?! Our first hook up on a small Dolphin fish in about 80 meters of waters running directly east from Sydney Heads. So we keep trolling east into 100 meters of water and kept hooking up on Dolphin fish. The biggest fish going about 15lb, a couple around 6lb and lots of smaller ones. A small kingie came in as well, about 2lb. Great quick fix afternoon trolling session and the Dollies taste great on the BBQ. We got fish on all the lures in our spread, but the most effect was a lure chain of three 6 inch Scent Blazer Nano Trolling lures which we ran in the corner. We put pilchards inside the bait chamber of the stinger lure, so the stringer is the most appealing (tasty) of the 3 lures in the chain. Having the 3 lure chain made it look like more small school of bait fish which is why the lure chain got hit the most and having the bait in the stinger lure made the lure with the hook in it irresistible. If you want to try to Scent Blazer Lures get a 5 lure rigged pack which is ideal for Dolphin Fish and Small Marlin to get you started for only $99.99. Happy fishing radiers! Peter Scent Blazer Lures 15lb Dolphin Fish caught Scent Blazer 6” Nano Trolling Lure loaded with pilchards in the bait chamber. Only place bait inside the stinger lure of the trolling lure chain because that’s one you want the fish the strike at. Brilliant colors in the water. Nice little “Dorado” as they say in Mexico. Small Yellowtail Kingfish caught trolling on a Scent Blazer Nano Lure.
  14. Saturday Afternoon, stated on low tide and the hunt for Sydney Harbour Tailor and Kingfish was on. We trolled for a few hours around the harbour using small Scent Blazer Atom prototype lure. It's the time of year when Tailor schools make their way in larger numbers into Port Jackson (Sydney Harbour). We see it as an indicator to the start of Summer fishing season, along this part of the east coast of Australia. With 20 degrees water and a good food sauce from the North, looks like the billfish season is going to start early this year. Large flocks of Australia Silver Gulls were at North Head of Port Jackson and in the Harbour. And yes, we do a eye test on all fish we catch. Big Smile And below is the type of spread we use for inshore trolling. Note: 25% discount for all Fishraider Members. 15. No thats Friday the 18th! The day started at 10:30 with a soft ride out of Sydney Harbour (Port Jackson). The water in the harbour was a light blue and clean. We rigged our Scent Blazer lures with bait, and with a nice backdrop and blue skies we were then ready to start trolling. We shot out of the heads and headed south east with Browns Mt mapped and marked on the GPS with 20 degrees water temperature. We trolled at high speed with a heavy weighted Scent Blazer bullet head lure and just at the Australian shelf slowed down to set a full spread of trolling lures and teasers. Kept pushing past Browns Mt south east and found a temperature change to 22 degrees and came across a large flock of Petrel. DMS S 34:04:6.907 E 151:40:25.545 Decimal -34.068585 151.673762 The Petrel were in a flock of around 800 birds in a large band from north west to a stream of birds running south east. We did see large schools of fish, some just breaking the surface. We couldn't identify the species - this made us all very sad... moving on. We trolled for quite some time with no hookups, we tried everything. Swapping lures, changing teasers etc, not a thing, just a lot of birds and fish in deep water. Just before Browns heading north west on our way back we did have a notable occurrence. Our shot gun got smashed. It was quick and very big and heavy. The line broke only a few metres off the rod tip. We didn't see very much, but we did hear the rods recoiling and hitting the radar case with a large smack sound and a scarred radar case. Maybe the drag of just a very big thing in the water. Well now that thing has a small Scent Blazer lure and a hook with 90 meters of good line stuck in it, Oops. We did note looking back to Sydney that the bushfires were making the sky look very red. Gave a nice golden glow to the water. Note: 25% discount for all Fishraider Members. 17. Fantastic ready. Last time I saw Baramundi in Sydney Harbour was a fish and chips shop.
  18. Hi gibodfisho, What colours were working for you?
  19. Very nice, as a trade Chef I concur with the above.
  20. With whispers of Big Yellowfin Tuna and the odd Barrel Bluefin showing up on the NSW south coast I thought id write a little something to get you in that Tuna mood. There is nothing like being out at sea on a crisp winters afternoon pulling lures in the search of those barrel like Bluefin or long sickled friends the Yellowfin Tuna. Those afternoons where there isn’t the slightest bit of wind or swell, lots of bait and the sound of the VHF radio yelling “4 way hook up”! Now you know you’re near the boat that’s just hooked up. You can feel those Tiagra’s about to burst into action, you’re on the edge of your seat, hoping that the next boat to hook up is you! The radio burst out another scream of “we’re on”. The mood on the boat is high with all the crew keeping their eyes on the surface and on the lures, ready to jump up and grab the rod! Then you see it, the sounder marks fish 10 fathoms below the surface but by the time you go to scream out ‘Tuna!’ the two outriggers explode and the Tiagra’s burst into a scream only to be followed by the corners!! You’re now hooked up, four big fish going different directions. You look at your mates and they are all getting stretched with big grins across their faces. Now you think to yourself, this is what game fishing is all about!! 1,2,3,4 fish hit the deck and high fives are exchanged, it’s all worth it. All the time, all the effort and all those fishless session come down to this moment! This is how things went for us one crisp afternoon last season, there were fish being caught only a few miles south of us. The sun was just about to set and the light was fading quickly. The call to add LED lights to the lures to make them more visible, and it was the right call! Only moments after adding the LEDs to the lures, daylight disappeared. Then the sounder lit up followed by 5 rods going off all at once! It was mayhem, the crew jumped up and everyone was fishing a fish. After 45 minutes, the first, second and third fish hit the deck. The 4th fish pulled the hooks and the 5th fish managed to damage the line resulting in a bust off. If we didn’t add the LED lights to the lures the chances of hooking up would have been reduced! We had a sixth lure out without a LED that didn’t get touched during the Tuna ambush. That was all the proof I needed that the LEDs along with the bait assisted in the bite. 100kg+ Bluefin Tuna The Scent Blazer Crew caught last season at night. By adding LEDs to the lures made the lures stand out to the Bluefin Tuna at night, this is why Scent Blazers are such a versatile lure. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gx7MdlJ80FI&feature=player_detailpage Bluefin Tuna footage, how and what Scent Blazer Lures to use to catch Tuna. I am sure many others out there had that exact same feeling and for the Reef Magic crew, they had a blinder of a season. Damo and the boys put many fishraiders on to their first ever Tuna. I was told stories of big bluefin over the 100kg mark eating the teaser out of Damo’s hand. I was also informed that the Scent Blazers they ran would always be the first lure to be eaten out of the spread. Winner of the Scent Blazer Photo Competition and happy customer, Josh Walden with a 70kg Bluefin Tuna caught on a Scent Blazer aboard Reef Magic Charters. There is something special about catching Tuna. It seems like there is hours, days and weeks of effort put into preparing for the arrival of the first Tuna to our local waters. It doesn’t matter what you have on you just seem to drop everything and find any excuse to head east in the search for a piece of the action. After having a successful season last year I decided to do a little research on what drives tuna to feed. I found one piece of information that confirmed that Scent Blazers lures have the advantage in attracting and encouraging a strike! It’s a scientific fact that tuna have an acute sense of smell, they locate potential food using their ability to hone in on a scent trail. Scent Blazer Teasers are designed to lay a steady scent trail behind your boats and lures. The advantage is that the fishy scent and bits of bait falling out of the teaser will create a path for Tuna to swim up and find your lures. Having scent in your lures will help the tuna locate the lures. When the tuna strike the lures they will taste the fishy scent inside the lure. The lures actually look and taste like real bait fish that makes them irresistible to all types of Tuna. Having bait inside the chamber will increase the strike rate but will also keep the fish coming back in the event of a missed hook up. Tuna hunt with their nose and when using Scent Blazer Lures and Teasers you will find when they fish are in the area they will find your lures!! Last season saw most of our bites towards the end of the day as the sun and light completely disappeared. Most of our Tuna hook ups were in complete darkness. By adding LED lights and glow sticks as well as bait to the lures made the lures more visible at night to any predatory fish. Adding lights to your Scent Blazer lures is a great way to attract Tuna to your lures at night, on late afternoons and even overcast days. Something so simple has seen us continue to catch many Tuna into the evening when regular lures are far less effective. Check out the Tuna Pack at the link bellow, it comes fully rigged and comes with a free 12” Teaser all for a great price! Make sure you get all the tuna lures you need to get into some fish this season! Don’t head to sea without having a couple of Scent Blazers on board, you’ll regret it! http://scentblazer.com/Products/tabid/292/ProdID/1212/Game_Fishing_Lure_Pack_2__Tuna.aspx Finding Tuna can be tricky, check out this article on tips and tricks in finding Tuna! http://www.scentblazer.com/FishingAdvice/OffshoreTrolling/Trickstofindingtuna.aspx Keeping my eyes and ears peeled for reports of the arrival of Tuna off Sydney. 21. Hey Down to fish, From what i understand the WiFi doesn't work underwater or through the prop wash, can anyone shed some light on this?
  22. Oh its getting there mate, a very long process. I think the engines are going in shortly:)
  23. Awesome!! you'll love it:) Nuh we just use the Wi Fi and view it through the iPad or on our iPhones. The App is free and heaps cheaper than the screen. cheers Andyg
  24. With whispers of marlin off our coast the scent blazer crew got together for what would be a last shot of a marlin for this season. As the Marlin season or lack there of comes to an end we decided it was only right that we got out and had a search around and see if we could raise a late fish or and early Fin, our plan was to head out to the shelf area and see if we could find anything. The day started in the berth, with the boat ready to go we dropped the lines and casually motored up the harbour to Lavender Bay where we would pick up the remainder of the crew before a quick fuel stop and then out to sea. The Fog slowly lifting off Sydney Harbour On our approach to the heads the swell was washing over south head and pounding North head but on the horizon was calm seas and what we hoped, fish a plentiful… As we passed the back swell bouncing off the cliff faces the sea got into that rolling rhythm and we headed north east to the Sydney FAD as the surface temp was 21.8 and blue, we were hoping to find a nice dolly but on our arrival it was completely void of anything fishy! After doing a few passes for no joy we headed further northeast to the Manly Hydraulics Buoy, on our approach to the mark we have fished many times before but it was gone!! If its choppy in close its worth passing through it as its usually calm on the other side of the back swell bouncing off the cliffs Now the Manly Hydraulics website is updating info that’s streaming from the buoy but the buoy is nowhere to be found? We looked a few miles in each direction from the marks we have and nothing, has anyone fished it in the past week? As we couldn’t find the buoy we decided to head east into deeper water towards the shelf where we changed the lures and added a few Scent Blazer Large and Mediums to the spread. We loaded the lures this striped Tuna we had caught last trip and begun our trip out to the shelf. The water temp was rapidly dropping the further east we trolled, it fell to 20.1 from 21.8 in a short period but that break held no bait or importantly, no fish! Checking your gear before putting your lures out is a must as wear and tear takes its toll on terminal tackle As we reached the 60fathom mark we were greeted by a slight temp change and increased bird activity but again no predatory fish, we had every size lure in the spread from 12inch right down to 4inch (Prototype) and everything in between. We also ran a chain of Scent Blazer teasers loaded with striped tuna and pilchards, we load the lures with the same bait as we load the teasers with, this helps the fish to find the lures as they hone in on one smell and don’t have to determine what the other smells are. We loaded this Scent Blazer Skipjack with actual skipjack, now the lure not only looks like a skipjack it tastes like one to. As we reached the shelf we decided to follow the shelf line from the bait station south, we zig zagged our way down the shelf with an entourage of Tuna Birds, Gannets, Mutton birds and the odd Albatross, I think they thought we knew were the fish were but we also had the same intentions towards them but the further we trolled the less the birds followed… we continued south till the clouds engulfed the sun and darkness filled the sky… Birds often know where the bait and fish are so keep and eye out for circling and or diving birds as they could find the fish before you do... As the day was overcast we added lights as well as bait to the lures to make the lures more visible. We covered some serious ground in the search of something fishy, a marlin or a tuna, anything but it was not to be so we trolled into the night. It seem as though the marlin season is over and now we just await the arrival of Big Sickled friends the Yellow Fin Tuna. There is a nice break wide off Sydney that the long liners are pulling good fish from, lets hope the current pushes in and brings with it plenty of big barrels!! Keeping a close eye on your lures is essential as getting tangles can cost fishing time and can damage gear. When its overcast you can add LED lights to your Scent Blazers to make them more visible to predatory fish like marlin and Tuna Get your Scent Blazers online or at Ottos Tackle world Drummoyne http://scentblazer.com/Products/tabid/292/ProdID/1212/Game_Fishing_Lure_Pack_2__Tuna.aspx Trolling at night can be very effective with the right lures http://scentblazer.com/Products/tabid/292/ProdID/1212/Game_Fishing_Lure_Pack_2__Tuna.aspx Until the next bite… Tight Lines Andrew SBC
