  1. Sand mullet usually have a black blotch at the top of the base of the pectoral fin. As viewed here; http://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0011/375932/Sand-Mullet.pdf Also, when compared to the sea mullet, sand mullet have a pointier snout.
  2. Hey boattart, When having some left over braid, I like to keep it aside to use as a connection to leaders. The way I do this is I run a double (two loops) bimini twist on my main braid off the reel; I then do the same knot with the left over braid; then simply a loop to loop knot between my main braid and about 1 metre or so from the left over braid. then using an fg knot (sebile knot, etc.) I attach my trace to the left over braid. I find this very useful, as it is great for preserving your spooled length of braid; because when one loses traces they are not actually decreasing the length of the spooled braid. This is my bimini from the braid coming off the reel. This is the bimini at one end of the left over braid. This is the loop to loop connection between both bimini twists. This is the fg knot from the left over braid to the fluro trace. This is the whole setup. I hope this helps. I prefer this method as any left over braid is utilised and not simply put to waist. P.s. sorry about the camera quality. Ziad
  3. Good find The Incredible Hull. I watched that episode too and enjoyed Robson's antics. Although these are similar to conventional margin poles, I do believe that they only serve a niche market; those chasing Ayu. Although similar, I reckon that they would have little use here in AUS; as those lightweight Ayu fishing poles would have difficulty landing and controlling a bream; let alone a rampaging mullet, or better yet a drummer. Have a look at this website that I have found http://www.tackle2u.com/pole-fishing/margin-poles-whips.html. And yes to confirm, some poles are expensive; with some Daiwa models fetching 5,000 British Pounds or so. However, you can still find something within your budget, and a quality pole can still be bought for around $200.00 AUD. Further, I haven't purchased from the above store, nor am I affiliated with them, so I can't comment on their service, etc. But they are one of the cheapest that I have found on-line. Hope this helps nsaykali.
  4. Hey nsaykali, Seems that we are both hooked on the same form of fishing. It's a shame that it is very difficult to find good quality poles here in Australia, however the largest market for this form of fishing is the English (UK) market. They have gone far and beyond the ordinary 6.0m fising whip to using 16m elasticated poles. The common name for these poles are; fishing whips/margin poles (this is if the pole is <8.0m) and simply an elasticated pole (>8.0m). Poles greater than 8.0m are usually elasticated, as the elastic running through the pole's top section aids when playing larger fish. I have two fishing whips, an abu garcia, which is built on a composite blank and is 8.0m long; and a 5.3m daiwa pole (graphite). I usually fish with the daiwa due to the weight advantage. Let me know if your ever around Sydney, as I can't find anyone that enjoys this form of fishing beside myself. By the way, I know this may sound a little common, but try purchasing through an online supplier. You could probably pick up a nice 8-10m pole delivered for under AUD$200. PM me for a session. Cheers, Ziad
  5. Hey Guys, My name is Ziad, I'm 24 years of age; and have just graduated from university (bbc. accounting). I'm unemployed and spend alot of my days out on the water. I love all forms of angling, problem is I don't own a boat, nor do I drive; luckily my father loves angling as much as I do. I live in Fairfield and love chasing fresh water mullet on whips and poles around the georges river. I love all forms of angling, I have yet to try game fishing and have just started to get into fly fishing (although no catches yet). I originally began fishing at an early age, however quickly lost interest due to my short attention span and my stubbornness in refusing to eat fish (which still holds). However, within the last three to four years, I have become an addict, and this time there is no going back. Further, I'm a knot freak and have to know all about knot tying. I guess that's part of the addiction. Lately, I'm into beach and rock fishing and usually use plastics and ordinary bait methods. However my passion is primarily chasing bream, luderick and mullet (both fresh and bullies) on margin poles/whips. I usually fish Kurnell, Port Hacking river system and Chippo. All my fishing is land based and some of my PB's include: - 52cm sea-mullet (bully) on a 5.3m fishing whip (hell of a fight); - 44cm fresh water mullet also on the whip; - 39cm luderick on the whip; - 52cm flathead of the beach; - 43cm bream of the beach; and - 47cm sand whiting of the beach. If you fishraiders are ever in the area, feel free to pm me and we can arrange an angling expedition...
