Guys thanks so much for all the opinions. You guys have talked me out of buying a cheap older glass boat, which im sure would have been something i would have regretted doing. So by the replies in thinking i need to go aliminium with a motor that isnt so old. Im really wanting something over 4m, and a runabout style boat. Is it realistic to think I can grab something decent s/h for under 3k? Ive seen a bunch online but dont know if for that price im again looking at something that will need work. Would the hull age be much of an issue with a tinny? And how old is too old for a motor to look at? Thanks again guys, if this site wasnt around id probably be cursing a bad purchase pretty soon. G'day guys, hope you're all well. Looking at FINALLY buying my first boat, and I could really use some help. I only have a budget of around $2500 to spend. Initially I figured I would probably be looking at a small tinnie for the price, but I see a lot of bigger runabouts and half cabs that are a little older. The majority of my trips would be with my wife and two young boys, or a few mates, I do think a runabout or half cab would suit my needs better. Just wondering, if people are letting them go at this price am I buying a hunk of junk? Or is it reasonable to think I could get a decent rig for that price? I have found one boat that I have become a little smitten with. It's a 15 foot half cabin with a 50 HP Mercury on the back. Had a chat to the guy and he said the motors a bit old but runs really well. It's advertised for $3500 but he has told me he would go down to $2500. I plan to have a look at it, but to be honest, not completely sure of what I need to check for. Can anyone help out with some advice on what to ask and what to look for? I've attached a few photos below. I'm so excited to be finally getting a boat, don't want to screw it up and get myself a lemon. Thanks in advance guys.

Thanks for the help guys. I ended up going to Davidson Park near Roseville bridge for a fish. Pulled up plenty of chopper tailor, some small bream, and a small whiting. I'm guessing it's not far from Echo Point? I'll definitely keep that info in mind for Bradley's Head, might have to go down for a solo fish at some point. Trying to look for a spot to get into some decent flathead with the kids, seem to have a tough time doing so. Easy finding the bream, the flatties not so much for me.

Hey guys. Looking to go for a fish in the morning and taking the little rugrats with me. After a bit of research looks like I might give bradleys head a crack. Just wondering if it's appropriate for little kids? An almost 4 year old and a one year old. Im also wondering what the fishing is like? Such a great write up mate, really painted a picture. May not have landed it but half the pain in not landing a fish is not knowing what you had, at least you got to see the beauty. Congrats in hooking your first marlin. I'm going out to the fad on Wednesday, I'm really fired up after this post!

Hey guys, my Dad just bought a Lowrance Elite-5 Hdi Fishfinder/GPS combo. We're taking the boat out on Saturday and looking for somebody to install the unit hopefully tomorrow. We already have the fishfinder that came with the boat installed so figured it would be a simpler install then from scratch. The boat is a Quintrex Seabreeze 500 2000 model. We are located at Toongabbie (near blacktown) so we would need to find someone not to far away. We have rung a few places but are getting quoted minimum $200, I assume because its a small job they make it worth their time. We were hoping to find someone that would be able to do it for around $100. Do any fellow raiders know anyone that would charge about that amount? Tight lines

Thanks for the advice guys. So far the plan is to bring some chicken breast and pillies and gather some livebait and fish the Fads with the heavy gear and have a few small rods out. All I know is I can't wait to get out there!!! I'll let you guys know how I go. Sent from my C6603 using Tapatalk

Hey guys, long time no post. Getting a handheld gps to go out to the Fads for the first time next Saturday. I have a few questions. First of all - anybody with experience with the handheld gps are they pretty much as good as an inbuilt unit? And gear wise, usually we go out with some light gear, about 8 pound line on light rods and a few heavy rods with 40 pound mono. Is this gear realistic to fish out there? Hi guys, I hope everybody is having a good Christmas/New Year break. And I hope there is plenty of fishing packed into it!!! Headed to Rose bay this morning for a days fishing. Got on the water about 5:45am as the sun was coming up. Had prawns, squid, pilchard and chicken breast on board. Hoping to catch some yakkas to turn into a Kingfish! Still haven't gotten off the mark and felt like the right time to get my first! Tried at the white marker for a little while. We were getting little nibbles but no hookups. Then I had something take my bait and run. I could tell it wasn't a yellowtail straight away with the account it gave of itself. It put up a nice fight on 4 pound fireline. Suddenly up pops a 32 cm silver trevally which wasn't quite what we were after but a nice surprise given that it isn't a usual catch for us. In the esky it goes and lines are back out. Within about 15 minutes I was on again this time bringing in a bream which was maybe just legal. After releasing him we fished in that spot for maybe another 20 minutes with nothing to show. We decide to try the red marker before the heads as we had a good day at this spot last week. Unfortunately we were just getting terrorised by what we figure were small leather jackets. We were losing our baits as soon as they were hitting the water and we were feeling nothing. We decided to go past the heads to see if we could finally get ourselves some Kingfish. We stop in a likely looking spot in about 17-19m worth of water. Within not to long I bring in a Maori Wrasse. Then it was on for everyone as between us we pulled in 3 Wrasse, 3 Rock Cod (including a stonker of one caught by my brother) and a 50cm Sergeant Baker within the space of about 10 minutes. Then my missus' rod went berserk! She was using a heavy boat rod with 40 pound mono and she had no chance. She was dragged around the boat for a while and tightened the drag to stop getting busted off and tightened it a touch to much. I was left with a devastated woman and a real opportunity to grab bragging rights if I was able to catch whatever it was that she missed! Game on! We had a strong suspicion it was a nice Kingfish. About 20 minutes later my brother's rod goes off. He gets carted around the boat a bit and ends up bringing in a nice Rat King of 55cm. Might be small to a lot of you guys but for our first King we were more then happy enough! A few happy snaps and Mr King was released to grow a bit bigger for next time. Action died down a bit after that so we decided to go a bit further out. We found a spot that was registering between 30-35 metres deep. I fillet the trevally and put a fillet on a size 8 Gamakatsu Octopus Circle hook. This is on my Wilson Rod and I am running 20 pound Fireline with 20 pound Vanish leader. I figured I'm running pretty light if there are any decent size Kingys around but decide to chuck it in anyway. After about 15 minutes something takes the trevally fillet and takes off like there's no tomorrow!! I grab a hold of my rod and can't seem to make any ground on this fish whatsoever. Its peeling line off my reel and I figure it's going to bust me off. Luckily I eventually was able to bring him in, net him and get him into the boat. By the fight this thing gave me I was expecting to see a fish at least close to a meter long. It ended up being another 55cm Kingfish!! While I was stoked to get my first King I was amazed by the strength in this guy!! Now I understand what people talk about with the pound for pound power of these guys. Was a good feeling releasing such a strong little fella. All in all was a good day out on the water. Had a ball, brang home a nice feed and popped my Kingfish cherry. My obsession to catch a big King has now begun! Happy New Years to all. Tight Lines and take care, Rob.

Hey guys, looking at a new combo. I was looking at the veritas rod and orra reel from abu Garcia but realised I can get the daiwa Aird combo for the same price. I was just wondering if anybody has experience with the Aird and if it goes alright?

I haven't tried those z-mans yet, but the reports I keep hearing on them make me think I should be. Oh well, off to the tackle shop tomorrow! Nice catch mate.

Mate that's different - catching a King and a Bass in the same day! Nice work, looks a healthy Bass. It's a nice feeling catching fish away from the usual haunts. Mate did you make out what type of Shark it was by any chance???
