  1. Took off down to the lake last night about midnight (too old to sleep) and decided to go down the front for a change. It was going on low tide and I was using some old bait I had lying around, thinking that this was just a time killer and I wasnt suposed to catch anything. LOL. Isnt it the way. I was fishing with Stinky old prawn that had been frozen a few times. You know...... quality bait.. :074: When all of a sudden this little beauty snaffled the bait and took off. This is a new pb for me In fact I have only seen photos of ones this big. It went 40cm and tasted great for breakie this morning.

  2. Thanx mate, I was just pondering that very question about the age of lobsters. Seeing those giant ones lately has got me thinkin'. I didn't know that there wasn't much research done on them. I dont eat them so i am not racked with guilt for eating an old man either. Since learning about growth rates in fish, I have been alot more diligent in returning fish back to the sea and not taking more than a feed. That is, if I can even get a feed.

  3. I have never caught a kingie so I dont have to worry yet. All it means to me is my first take home kingie will be a beauty. but if the new limits and sizes will ensure that my grand kids will still be catching fish in the future. I dont have a problem and I will adhere to them. We are still allowed to catch them just not keep them

  4. hi Mariner 31,

dont pay attention to the previous squabbles...

that will prob get sorted soon enough.......

well done  ,looks like a lot a fun was had there..

im curious as to what the fisheries raft is also...

and what was the rainbow you described.....

are they as nice eating that size compared to the bigger models....

    anyway well done again...

    cheers....steve.........

Im with you mate, and I would love to have been there

  5. Went chasing Kings in Pitty after hearing that a few had moved in. Got some live yakkas at my fav wharf and hit the heads around 7am. Towed them all around for zilch.

Then anchored up at my fav point inside Pittwater on western side and started a bury trail and set out a live yakka. First little pesky snapper coming in on my light threadline got followed right up to the boat by a solid Kingy (est approx 70-80cm). Water was gin clear and was amazing to watch this Kingy follow my little snapper around right near/on the surface. Tried to switch bait him with the yakka on the heavy stuff but not interested (was actually more interested in my bean sinker!). Maybe the 40lb mono leader put him off??

Next little snapper came up and it happend again! :1badmood: Exciting and frustraing. Never caught a kingy before so my knees were shaking and the heart a racing! Put down a fresh frozen squid head but not interested either.

Anyway gave up on the king and started bringing in a few 30-35cm breams and a nice trev of 35cm on pillie fillet and squid. Was getting cut off without knowing it occasionaly so thought there might be some good tailor or bonito around.

Then had a massive run on my 6lb outfit that spat the hook - felt like bonito for sure as it came up high in the water column.

So put out an unweighted strip of squid and lef it in the rod holder. After a while the rod starts sparodically zinging. Thought it was just an ok snapper or trev as i picked up the rod but as i brought it in it went ape s#@! near the boat. Looked like a bonito or maybe even a spotted mackeral in the water.

After a great 5 min fight on my little 1000 stradic a Watsons Leaping Bonito hits the net. I was stoked! I had heard they come into pitty occasionallly but a pretty rare capture non the less. Jeez they go hard and even more eratic and fast runs than a normal bonnie. Went 45cm's. Such a pretty fish too.

Had a mate swimming with him so kept him for the table. Hope it eats ok? Try one fillet and if ave use the other for bait!

Totaled 5 legals, kept three which is a lot better than what pitty has been producing for me. No sydney harbour but at least the pros haven't got them all. Maybe I won't give up on this fishery just yet.

    Cheers

    Jake

Nice effort for Pittwater Jake. I am having the same drama too. Too many trips for nought. i hope to change that soon too.

  6. Hi guys,

headed up my local in pittwater to stock up on squid and soak a bait for bream while flicking jigs around for squid......got to my spot around eight and as im putting a yellowtail strip on the 1/0 i notice 2 squid prowling..mmmmmm quickly pick other rod with jig and as i cast a school of small choppers intercept my targets and they shoot off 100 miles an hour.. :ranting2: .. oh well get yt rig in the zone awaiting for the bream school to come feeding in the shallows as they do... i commence flicking for awhile and notice a few pickups an nibbles on yt rig but nothing stays.... after sending out a fresh bait i monitor this one carefully... i notice a slow pickup and some very faint taps so as he picks up bait again i lift rod and set hook :yahoo: im on this thing pulls drag so i set drag tighter and a zig left zag right some dancing around structure then finally land this very fit 35cm bream :yahoo: .... i quickly put another bait out then the same things happen... very finnicky touches... time to gut fish to see what they are feeding on,this is a very good thing to do sometimes as a bait switch may be difference to success/failure... this breambo was full of squid chunks, damn i left squid heads at home... continue to flick for squid and monitor yt rig... i drop a stonker squid of 30 - 35cm hood then 10 min later get his friend of 30cm hood... i quickly put one of his candles on 1/0 then into the killing zone and within a couple mins im on  after a nice tussle i land a 30cm model..this female was full of crabs /squid so crabs woulda been a good goer also... anyway had a couple small bites for no other hookups and tide had passed for this spot so concentrated on squid for one smaller one.....

was a very quiet night as not alot of baitfish around and not many sqiud but was happy to take home a feed...

if you know the fish are there its good if possable to check stomach contents as you may be able to change baits etc and get better success.....

Thanx for the tip mate, I live in Gods country too, but I still need all the help i can get. Isn't just slippin' down the road for a fish da bomb!!. Good work on the fish. It keeps the :wife: at bay. :074: And ensures another day on the water

  9. Howdy,

Had a fish tonight in the backyard (Narrabeen Beach). The tailor came on the chew after dark and ended up bagging this 60cm fella. The pic is a beauty. I have discovered a new talent this month: mo growng. 1st thing december 1 though, off she comes.

    Cheers

Bugger the mo, just let me at that 60 cm model. I can see that on my lil old rod and then sizzling in my fry pan. Things are really startin' to look up out here on the beaches. I can see me gettin yelled at alot this summer. :wife:

  10. went for a quickie this morning on the bay and caught this fella. Live yakka, 6lb fireline, 14lb vanish leader, bream rod. 67cm. took close to 100m of line on its first run. good fun

OMG... :1yikes: ........ what else is there to say. That is 1 fine fish

  11. [

Thanx for the replies guys, No problem for the flatties, I throw them all back. I just like to catch 'em. But the rest and I just wanted to know if there was any general rule of thumb for recognizing a pregnant fish. And dony worry if there is roe in them it aint wasted.... LOL And Dave try using bacon fat to fry it in

  12. Can anyone tell me is there a way to tell if a fish has roe or is there a time of year that we should just throw them back anyway, just in case. There arn't that many fish in pittwater and it would help with the guilty feeling when I gut them and find a stack of roe.

  13. hey everyone, headed to Narrabeen beach for a fish down the northern end of the beach, got there abt 5pm

throw out a few baits mainly fozen squid, for nuthing....

Plenty of weed around, well everywhere. Is that normal for Narrabeen beach?

Sorry mate, but thats fishin' I havent been fishing that long myself and I have those days frequently. Try in the lake. There are people who know the lakes well and post all the time. Keep coming here and dont be scared of asking people for help. !2 months ago I couldnt catch a cold, now I regularly get a feed, thanx to the great people here. Good luck

  14. Top little spot that one...................Ive been spooled by kingies off that wharf!

You couldnt really call what I was doing fishin' but I will take what I can get, and yeah I have seen some big kingies there but never hooked into one... YET. In fact I have seen quite a few big fish around there. I usually go for the yakkas and then toss it out live, then just sit back with my little kids rod and see what happens. Usually get a feed of something. and have a great time doing it too.
