  1. Has anyone tried dropping livies down deeper around the fad to try and tempt a bigger fish. I'll be out on sunday ( along with plenty of others i assume) and i think i'll have a crack with big livies if the main run of fish are only small. 5.5 Cruiscraft explorer with a 150 etec so say g'day if you run across us. Cheers Shane.
  2. I thought i might mention that shark fishing especially for big sharks can sometimes be a very dangerous sport for the inexperienced. Considering how many shark traces were sold and old reels being spooled in sydney's tackle shops this week it seems as though a lot of guys will be giving it a go. All the best with your efforts guys but just be careful. Cheers Shane.
  3. That would most certainly not be the only bitey in the harbour and there would probably be some that would bite Als fish in half. I think the fact that they stated that they didn't use burley was great ( no reason for anyone to get upset thinking fisho's were attracting more sharks ) also the qoute that the harbour is fishing better than ever and why is a good thing. I have some really old fishing books with stories from 1920's-1940's about shark fishing in the hawkesbury and 1000lb tigers were not uncommon and whites over 2000 were encountered as well. Hopefully we can see some of these awesome fish back.
  4. The area has some great bream fishing but you need to be there late at night after all the boat traffic is gone. Mix up a pudding style bait of cheese, flour, water and fish with no sinker and you will have a blast with the resident bream population. The rock wall on the way out to the ferry has a reputation as quite a good jewfish spot but i have spent a few nights soaking livies and squid there for nil result so far.
  5. If your serious about chasing sharks then 1metre of trace is not long enough. If a shark swallows your bait only 30cm down then you have only 70cm left to protect against the skin rubbing through your mainline. Live baits are not necessary but a good solid burley trail and minimum 3-4 metre trace is. On light tackle 10kg and under we would use 14ft traces and on heavy tackle 15 and 24kg we would use 25ft traces. Super sharp hooks and let them swallow the bait down for a good 30 sec.
  6. Spool weight will also have an effect on casting distance and i think the 700's are quite heavy. If you are comfortable with laying the line on your reel without a levelwind then its definately the way to go. I use a 7000 abu with the levelwind removed and it casts very well.
  7. If you are going to check them every 2 hrs or so then the 12 ply witches hats are fine but die the mesh dark green or black for better results. If you want to use the bigger traps then the rectangular ones will do but i have had more sucess with the round black traps. You are allowed five witches hats and one trap per person.
  8. A.Dawg with all the bells and whistles and the right blank you can get a 7ft 2-3 down to around the 100-105gm mark.
  9. Aussies 3-1 m. hussey top run scorer d.bollinger most wickets.
  10. I fished yarra bay last w/end for the first time and ended up with 5 flatties to 60cm on gulp 4' minnows. We just motored in close to the beach and drifted out with the N/E
  11. Rumour has it that a 300+ kg tiger was spotted at old mans hat yesterday
  12. As far as i'm aware the surebite poppers are still from the same distributor.
  13. Marlin don't have the heavy bone structure that we do so they are usually lighter for the same length as us. Looks around the 60-70kg mark to me. Great fish mate well done. Cheers Shane.
  14. Fished out of nelson bay yesterday for all 0's on marlin. Managed 3 dollies at the fad on the way back. The best water we found was 21.1 in 60 fathoms and it was 19.4 on the shelf. Cheers Shane.
  15. Your best bet for marlin is generally just off the front of the jail providing the bait is there. You also stand a good shot at cobia in the area.
  16. There is a great walkway in iron cove that is an awesome spot to spin for bream and flathead. You can fish both sides of the rowing club and around in front of the old apia soccer club and up towards the bridge. It fishes best from half tide up because its quite shallow but all manner of plastics will work and also the smilin jack raw prawn in pink has proved a cracker for me in the past. Best of luck. Shane.
  17. Depends on how serious you want to be when chasing sharks from the beach. The outfit you have will be fine for school sharks up to around 5 feet. If you want to target big sharks then an outfit more like a heavy LBG setup would be more suitable. Paddling big baits out on a board connected to a big outfit takes a lot of commitment but some huge sharks can be caught in close off the beach so why not have a go. Best of luck Shane.
  18. The soverign range of rods were discontinued by wilson about 12 months ago and they were cleared out at a very cheap price. You might find one around if your lucky but i doubt it will be quite as cheap as the one you purchased.
  19. I agree, if you can't get a local bloke or 2 to come out for a fish with you then definately go on a local charter. Be a total sponge for the day and ask plenty of questions. It may seem like an expensive excercise but so is trolling around in a great big ocean burning massive amounts of fuel before things start to click into place and you won't be second guessing yourself as to whether your doing the right things. Best of luck Shane.
  20. Chicken mince can be a real hassle as it is very fatty and tends to get clogged up in the keeper bags. Your best bet if you intend on being serious about sharking is to get a fairly big chest style freezer to keep your burley in. We found that a few of our local fish shops were more than happy to give us the offcuts and scraps from the store as long as we picked them up on a regular basis. We would put the fish tubs in every tuesday and pick them up on thurs or friday and hand over a couple of 5 buck scratchies. Once we had all the burley we would mince it ourselves.A 3 phase mincer works best but i believe a garden shredder does the trick also and we would put bread and tuna oil into the mix just to bulk it up a bit. Freeze your burley into 10L mop buckets and they fit nicely into a keeper net tied off to the side of the boat. If you have a fast drift on the day then use 2 keeper nets. This method works very well for mako and blue sharks however if you want to target tigers in summer then heavier chunks of burley is required to get down a bit. About 12-16 buckets worth should give you a pretty handy slick but for tigers around 150-200kg of mullet is the best. I enjoy all forms of gamefishing but i cut my teeth on sharking and will always have a love for mako's. Best of luck Shane.
  21. Heading up a couple of days early so its only 10 MORE SLEEPS NOW.
  22. A heat gun is perfect for the job. cut it about 10mm longer at each end that what you want it to finish as it will shrink as you heat it down and don't forget to apply a thin amount of araldite underneath before you start to heat it down. Best of luck Shane.

    Iron Braid

Iron braid is platil millenium just with a different sticker on the spool. Freddy's had the labels made so they could spin the story that it was something special.
  24. Aaaah that wets the appetite. When using plastics i run a small amount of knotable wire at the front to prevent the gill rakers ripping through the leader. Even on 80lb these big fish seem to do it with ease. I will be driving up from sydney and picking the (work) boat up from brisbane on the way and doing it myself but i will have a little help because we have organised HOPEFULLY a day out early in the week with foxie from barra havoc in Gin Gin.
  25. Stretch is definately your friend when gamefishing on most occasions.
