Hi Guys, First time poster on this forum. My name is Dave. Went away fishing with my mate Col and and my son Jono on the Easter weekend to Nowra. Thought we might try St Georges Basin for a bit of a fish bash. Was windy across the basin with 0.5m choppy swell. Thought we might try a couple of the artificial reefs for some snapper but it was too rough in my boat only a 12 ft tinny. Plan B - drift with the wind across the basin at least that way we wouldn’t have the rocking boat anchored at a reef. So we thought we might try for flatties instead. We have heard legends of large flatties in the basin with one bloke catching regularly up to 1.0m and even a 1.3m model.
Plan B seemed to work. First up I got a 45cm plus tailor which fought well, then I hooked what I thought was another tailor as it was fighting much the same way but I wasn’t get the silver flashes of colour. Then I saw her, a monster fat girl flathead. She saw the boat and took off on another run. Brought her in and then she saw the net and took off again. Brought back to the net the second time and she went again on a short run. Third time got her head into the net and got her into the boat and measured her – 72cm. A new personal best.
Had to let her go after the obligatory photos. I also caught a 48cm flattie and two smaller 37cm models. Jono got zip and my mate Col got a couple of too small flatties. We tried the river late afternoon and Col and I got a 45cm flattie each. Got all the fish on the same one lure Berkley gulp nuclear chicken.
We tried Lake Conjola the next day and met up with Jono’s boss and a couple of his mates and Jono hooked a beauty which we didn’t see but I estimate it was 60cm plus by the way it was fighting. we saw the leader but it saw the boat and went deep and spat the lure. Jono and my mate got a couple of too small bream and I got the big zip, nada not even a bite. The other boat got a couple of pan sized snapper and a 46cm flattie.
Col left in the morning and Jono and I went out in the river again. Jono got a 42cm flattie and I got a 32cm flattie too small to keep.
All in all it was a GOOD Friday and great boys weekend. I think it was my best fishing ever and will stay in my memory for a good while I reckon.
PS. Jono's boss texted a phone of a flattie caught in Conjola the next day 95cm
