  1. You're right. Need calm day if fishing high tide. I have caught drummer and trevallies there. Only been there twice but heard its a good blackfish spot. There is a path you can see on google maps but need to do some bush bashing as its overgrown. I would recommend going with someone as there cliff you need to climb down. Relatively simple but you never know what might happen. PM me if you want more details and I can email you a map. I went once on a weekday and had the whole area to myself. Went on a saturday and there were 8 other anglers.
  2. No probs on late reply. Just a note I fished dobroyd head before. Its just like full on rockfishing and not protected at all from easterly or southerly swells. Also ledges are quite low. Cheers toboggi
  3. Sgtbundy - have you caught anything decent around that area before? I had a go around those rocks before but got absolutely nothing so never went back.
  4. so true! haha he did say that if it wasnt for all the seasoning and sauce it may not have been as good
  5. he steamed korean style with garlic, soy, chilli powder and sesame seed oil - he thought it tasted pretty good. both of us were using a floating rig - small float with braid onto swivel and then flurocarbon leader. fishing at depths from 2m to 2.5m.
  6. yeah was south curl curl...actually closer to freshwater beach near the carpark. when we gutted the fish we could see all our burley in its stomach....so possibly heavy burleying brought them in
  7. Hi all, Hadnt been out fishing for a month now so the rain wasnt stopping me. My mate and I met up at our preferred spot at 5:30am and decided not to clamber down due to the rain. Would have been too slippery. Decided to hit curl curl rocks instead as we expected no one to be there. Was first time on these rocks and didnt know what to expect. Originally we were aiming for bream, drummer and blackfish. Started burleying for about an hour and half not a nibble in sight. Then in the space of 30 to 40 minutes my mate caught 1 black drummer (42cm), 1 silver drummer (42cm) and 2 x 35cm trevally. He hasnt been on a whole lot of fishing trips but it was the biggest fish he caught ever and first time catching drummer. So great job by him. I was left with a doughnut although we were using same rig and same bait (white bread). Not my day. Anyway was stoked for my mate. He was generous enough to give me the two trevallies for a feed. He took the silver drummer home but i did warn him that not many people eat it. Thanks Cheers, Toboggi
  8. great bag of drummer! Do you use a circle hook when fishing this method or just the standard j-shape hook? Mind letting us know what size? Thanks Cheers, Kenny
  9. Mate i normally out rockfishing and i have caught alot of blackfish on bread...and i have seen others catch them as well. My favourite bait is white bread as you also catch bream, trevally and drummer. Dont know why but fish love it.
  10. Great catch mate! I am sure you will remember it for a long time. I still remember clearly my first prolific luderick session.
  11. i just up the size of my bread bait to get some extra weight and so it sinks faster if thats the case. alternatively i use wet hands to get my bread bait on my hook to get some extra weight as well. how big is your bread bait? some people i have seen mould a whole slice of bread onto a their hooks....i have used up to half a slice but you are 100% right it depends on the conditions and how many pickers there are in the water....obviously longer rod also helps keep your bait in the area you want.
  12. i agree with autocad. i am no expert but If i use bread bait i dont bother with a sinker as it sinks naturally but great catch nonetheless for your 2nd shot at drummer!
  13. Great catch! Also took me awhile to get first one but once i picked it up was getting bags every time.
  14. Hi Chokpa, I use the cheapo home brand white bread you get from woolies. $1.15 a loaf. Get one slice and tear off the crust ...throw the crust into your burley instead of wasting it. Crust doesnt stay on well so never use the crust. I then divide it in quarters and wrap the quarter around my hook and squeeze until its a round doughy ball and hook is completely hidden with not air pockets. The trick is to make sure the bread is always in the plastic bag it comes in so it retains its original moisture. As soon as you take the bread out and leave it in the sun it becomes all brittle/dry and wont stay on the hook. Also make sure your bread isnt wet either. I normally take one slice out of the bag and take off crust and stick the remainder in my pocket so i can get 4 casts out before getting more bait out. Hope that helps. I have been told that the more expensive white breads or the those hot dog rolls stay on hook better but i never had a problem with the cheap brand. Cheers, Toboggi
  15. Nice catch...tried port hacking the other day and only managed 3 bait size squid.
  16. Definitely should get out there. Blackies and bream in very good numbers. Although swell looking a bit hairy next week.
  17. We were fishing for about 4-5 hours. Mucked around for the first couple of hours changing ledges, making burley etc. All fish were basically caught during first 2 hours of run in tide and 1 hr run out tide... could have bagged more blackies but got snagged and lost rig and called it a day as we had enough for a good feed. The blackies would not touch cabbage/weed at all. I started with cabbage with no downs. I actually got first blackie on squid strip and the rest of white bread. Bread is one of my favourite baits as I can catch all my target species with it. Thanks! Thanks! - Had the blackfish for dinner. Yum.
  18. My mate and I decided to head out early for the rocks up north Were looking to target breams, blackfish, drummer and trevallies. Was on location before first light - conditions were a bit more rough than expected. Started to fish our preferred ledges using a floating rig. Was starting to get rough with the rising tide so after an hour or so we moved to a more sheltered location. Continued to burley hard with bread and my mate started to pick up bream after bream I was using white bread and fishing a shallow spot and began to bring in blackfish after blackfish Before we knew it we had 5 bream and 7 luderick in the bag. I got busted off by a drummer which was frustrating as this would topped the day. Otherwise quite a memorable day for me as i never experienced such a hot bite with luderick in such a shallow spot. My rig was held at a depth of 1.2m....anything deeper would have resulted in snags and i was casting around 3 metres off the ledge (wasnt even casting - more like just dropping my rig right in front) Cheers, Toboggi
  19. Using a suspended jig is the same concept as using pilchards/yakkas on a spike i like using a jig at night because it doesnt stink (a spray my jig with a scent) and it glows in the dark. Alternatively i have seen people put a little glow stick at the end of the spike to attract the squid. Twice at bare island i have only caught suspending my jig but nothing from eging. Bring some camping chairs and an esky of food and drinks and relax while you keep an eye on your float - im no expert but what i find is the squid will continue to attack the jig so u dont need to be staring at your float the whole time.
  20. I see heaps of people fish off bridge but never seen anything caught. Squid seem to be there regardless of tide. Only problem is when you get one you risk losing it when lifting it up onto the bridge. I have a 5m plus telescopic net so it was ok for me...another bloke I spoke to there said he got two 30cm plus ones at dawn.
  21. Hi spykey I was using both daiwa emeraldas and yamashita jigs. The calamari was caught using a glow in the dark yamashita jig 3.5 size. I also gave it a quick spray of scent. Sitting about 1.5mm under a float because the water under the bridge at bare island is quite shallow.
  22. Thanks everyone. Very good to eat. Others say bare island is a bit hit and miss. Its the second time I have been and the first time I got one calamari of similar size.
  23. Hi all Headed out to bare island with a mate to try out a bit of squidding at night. Both of us are pretty much beginners. Conditions pretty calm with little wind which was a good sign. There was a few others having a go at squid but no one managed a single hit. I tried another rig my bro taught me - stick a glow in the dark squid jig under a small float and let it drift. After about 2 hours i got a hit and managed to hook up. Got a few more hits with this rig but didn't hook up. This is the second calamari i have caught using this floating rig - relaxing way to squid without having to cast all night. No one else off the bridge managed to get a squid (including myself) using the normal eging method. Cheers, Toboggi
  24. Nice catch stormy. I too noticed all the rocks had been stripped bare of any cabbage. Lucky I had bread bait and some cunjevoi bait.
  25. Thanks! Definitely agree. Thanks - i think it will be awhile before i break my PB for bream again
