Any recommendations on where to pick up a cylinder gasket and cover gasket? Or better still, where not to buy?

I don't have a parts # list for this outboard.

Independent outboards Arndell park about $140 for the gasket kit from memory. Helpful guys aswell.

This is the head of my 70 hp yammie.

The motor was overheating at low revs,ie when trolling livies and also at WOT, but not in between.

When I looked at the thermostat it looked a lot like yours.

I always flush the motor on earmuffs but evidently not enough.

The tap water being cold, limited time and being conscious of driving my neigbours made I probably never gave the engine time to get hot enough to open the thermostat for long.

Even after cleaning it up the stat opens very little at idle.

Pressure from the hose is bugger all when you look at the "relief"it gets through the earmuffs, excess pressure just spurts out the sides.

A Drum would allow for the water to warm up, meaning more flow through the t stat.

It would also make a reasonable silencer so you may be happier to run it longer.

If your impeller is missing parts you have wonder where those parts are now?

  3. YAY! Glad to hear you got to the bottom of it without any drama or expense.

I am about to post some photos of my head when I pulled it apart on a post just above.

All I can say is make sure you flush the yammie well.

    Good luck.

  4. Hey Stanton, I recon it's a no brainer. The extra cost is bugger all when your afternoon trip home end in darkness and you start second guessing your location.

Its been a long time but we have also been plunged into blindness by thick sea fog in the past.

Being able to look down and have your electronics confirm you are where you thought you were is awesome. Also, if you do break down you can radio in your exact co ordinates.

Thats all before you take into account the fishy business!

    That's awesome.

I was out there a few weeks ago in similar conditions. I lost a few when they jumped into the air. Anyone have tips of what to do when they jump (apart from crossing fingers) ?

I recon all you can do is keep the line tight and rod tip down. Just like Barra as their head comes out you are pulling them over and stopping vertical momentum. Then cross fingers!

  7. As far as the corrosion/ salt goes the top water hose is missing a hose clamp and is likely spraying a mist of salt water, get rid of the cable ties and use proper clamps, give it a wash and a spray with inox and you should be good to go.

  8. "Council will be reactive and will only monitor boat trailers in residential or other built up areas if they have been reported to Council in contravention of the new law."

It appears that this will only be an issue if someone dobs you in.

Parking infront of your own house is all good.

28 days! Do I only need to move it for 24 hours before I put it back!

Hopefully the council are sensible about this.

    The motor is a 2006.

When it lost power and when I throttle up again it was smooth, no coughing and shacking.

Yeah i hope mine doesn't end up like that, were you getting temp alarms?

    Cheers

No. I think because it was the bottom of the three pistons which seized and the temp sensor is located next to the top cylinder it didn't go off.

  10. Hey Peter, how old is your motor? I have a 95 70hp yammie.

If it goes into limp mode it should shake and carry on when you try and increase throttle.

When I first got mine, second hand it did similar to yours on a run back through the heads on the shoalhaven, not a place you want to loose power. Motor dropped all power before getting its breath and having another go. Found one spark plug badly eroded. Replaced plugs and problem never returned.

Rick is probably right, but I would start with the easiest items first.

Plugs , leads, filters. If the boat is new to you but you have no service history it's probably not a bad idea anyway.

Let us know how you get on.

Also, I did seize mine a few years later when a blade of the impeller inexplicably decided to let go, it had similar Simptoms. Heat up, get tight then when idled cool down, loosen up again and repeat until I shut it down at the ramp and it locked solid. Hope this isn't the case for you.
