1. I do recall a couple of middle aged fishos in the woollongong area being pulled up and inspected. A good haul of legal kingys they said, measure them all they said. Please don't look under the bunk in the cabbin they said. No all those under size fish aren't ours they said. No idea how they got there they said.

We all Know looks can be deceiving and that fishos generally are a crafty bunch.

I have been checked a few times at ermo on a week day in crappy weather and recon the idea that they will turn up any where any time is a good thing. I would like to see them more often even if they annoy me a bit.

  2. Good on u for persisting with the cold and getting a feed.

Unfortunately with sydneys fishing environment u are going to get all sorts. it is part of what makes the place great but has some down sides as well. As we saw from a fellow raiders trip to china, some peoples idea of good fish are different to ours.

Maybe some good natured advice for these guys is needed, but remember you aren't fisheries so confrontation should be avoided. If they persist just dob them in to fisheries.

let us know how the catty goes.

  3. I hope I make some sense here, The length of shaft between the coupler( part that goes on the towball) and the body (the block that is bolted to the trailer)has to longer than the gap between the back of the large nut on the back of the shaft and the actuating lever when the leaver is pulled on hard( the hand brake position)

If this is not set up correctly the coupler will contact the block under braking causing reduced breaking and a thud felt through the tow vehicle as the coupler impacts the block.

My suggestion would be to have as little as 10 mm gap at the back of the nut to the activating leaver when the brake is off and the trailer hooked up to the car.

I found out the hard way that my trailer flexes when stored propped up at the front, stretching my break cables to the point my breaks were running full stroke without any effective breaking.

Take note, I am presuming your over ride breaks work the same as mine.

I hope this is off some help and makes sense.

If in doupt a quick break test on a back road may be a good idea before u hit the way free.

  4. Mate, all the feed back is good stuff. In this day and age we should also take into account non fishos PERSEPTIONS, If a family of tree huggers walks past to see you cutting the throat of a fish and hang it flailing over a bucket with blood going every where it aint gunna be a good look. I like to be as humane as I reasonably can while getting the best out of my catch.

If the fish is of a size and breed where I can cut the throat and then break its neck quickly and then slurry/cold water that's the go I recon, but being a bit discreet if there are kids around might be advisable. bigger fish may require the spike or priest.

  5. Yeah this one went hard and deep, never jumped once hence my thinking I had a king on. I recon my tactic for kings works on the sambos as well, put some good pressure on but don't try and move the fish in the water column just idle toward deeper water and then start working them toward the surface.

At the end of the day it was a good fight and a good test of a brand new outfit.

  6. Thanks guys, I do occasionally eat sambos but usually when their prospects for a healthy release are not so good. I still had high hopes of a legal king at the time. When I got the last two bonnies on my way back to the harbour there fate was sealed. I often take a bonnie or two and quite like their subtle flavour.

Do you guys recon fish cakes freeze better than whole fish, I am not big on freezing fish as fresh is so much better.
