  1. I am not big on conspiracy theories, and you can find a counter argument for just about any view on the net. You just have to look at the anti vaccination moorons.

i can't justify expensive Fluro. I use black magic tough trace for 40 to 300 pound and Berkeley vanish for the light stuff.

FG knots and locked blood knots.

Just my expierience and I know I shouldn't but I usually use my teeth to cut lighter leader material and I recon vanish is harder to bite through than most nylon I have used.

Just a thought but if you are stretching your leaders to the point of "deformation" maybe you should upsize!

70cm salmon on 3pound braid and 6 pound vanish.

5 kg stripped tuna on 4 pound braid and 8 pound vanish, plus plenty more.

seems to do the trick for me.

i recon any monofilament is susceptible to heat when tying knots so long tails plenty of lube and a bit of care and I rarely have an issue.

As has been said before what you are confident with will work best for you.

  2. Thanks for a awesome article Mik.

On the bearing seal, I was advised by a knowledgeable person to avoid getting grease on the shaft where the seal sits as the rubber shouldn't spin on the shaft but inside the stainless cup. The seal should be packed with grease in the outer circumference.

I may have it wrong but was told this is where most seals fail.

Hi my previous rod was a 2-4 kg 6' 6". I purchased a 1-3kg 7' 6". I'm getting similar casting distance with both rods with 1/24 jigheads and same line. What am I doing wrong? Is the casting technique with a lighter rod different?

There are so many variables. Number of guides, size, spaceing and style of guides.

Quality and style of blank. The reel you are using,

As Derek said your casting style with a particular blank.

In some cases size definantly isn't everything.

  4. The PVC rod tube is the go. All rods should go in a individual cloth bag, if you tie a length of foam around the rod or rods( 30 mm x 30mm 300 long) in 3 or four places along the rod. Slide rods in butt first and there will be no rubbing bumping or breaking.

Also, don't underestimate the quality of modern travel rods. If you pay for a good one and use it correctly even the biggest fish will be an option. ( I have a 2 piece t curve jig rod that is an absolute cracker)

  5. Far from being a suspension expert but if you are hitting your bump stops on a regular basis you shouldn't be surprised if your chassis lets go.

It is surprising how many Utes both work and recreational are close if not exceeding gvm and are struggling on stock suspension.

My last work ute was a triton approaching  gvm. The rear springs inverted and hit the bump stops if you hit a speed hump at more than walking pace.

Awesome report. Now we've got another convert hooked for life.

That must have made both your days.

Thanks man. He's definitely a convert. He thinks he's the worlds greatest fisherman now! His little sister is jealous and asking to go fishing, just the two of us. She is even asking for her own fishing rod.

It looks like the bed time fishing stories are paying off.

And yes, more than a little bit proud.

  7. Mix it up and see how they like it on the day.  In shallow water with small blades I like an erratic slow roll.single double or even triple hope work. If you are chasing flatties just keep it closer to the bottom.

    Ok thanks mate,

Do you have any fav colours? Would the 1/8oz be an ok size. Will mainly be trying in close to the shoreline

I like silver and blue. Go as small as you like for bream and whitting. As big as you like for flatties and Jew. 1/2 ounce being a bet each way.

look for grease nipple and pump some into it often while turning motor...should be halfway up on other side of foto..rick

If it will move a little bit then this is the go. If you don't use marine grease some others can go hard over time.

Silicon will lube but not penetrate really well. Something like inox that is a degrease/penetrate will get in and loosen up the mech better in my opinion. Once free keep the marine grease up to it.

if you have no luck jump in head first. Take lots of photos and pull it apart.

    Good luck!

  10. You got a good feed there Blaxland, we had no luck on the squid last week in the harbour either. I wonder if they are too busy making little baby squid or something?

    go the young fella,

best last day of holidays he could've had

what type of rapala lure were you using

Hey Regan, the exact lure is a SXR10  BSRD. It's a 10 cm suspending slashbait in blue sardine colour. They dive to about 1 meter and suspend.

My reasoning for using this one was low resistance on the troll as it was on a 3 foot  ugly stick. (Kids rod) and perfect prey size for rats, salmon and bonito.

    good report

good onya taking him fishing he may return the favour one day:D

Thanks guys, I'm counting on him to keep me fishing as long as I'm breathing.

he has been fishing with both his grandfathers so hopefully in about 25 years we'll be taking my grand kids.

  13. Nice one Bryson, I still have trouble picking the bites when surf fishing. The bottom will be covered in corrogations and the sinker dragging and bouncing feels like bites. If in doubt apply a little pressure and if you feel weight strike. If you are using pillies on a gang you shouldn't be getting baited too quickly.

    Good luck.

We fished 3.5 -4's and I had success with darker colours

Thanks mate, I have been using lighter natural colours and glow type for little result lately. I might go back to my old favourite dark red.

  15. Hi guys. Took my boy and his gramps out on Friday. Last day of school holidays.

We put in late morning at tunks. I was pretty surprised to see so few boats at the ramp even considering there being a bit of wind.

We tried a few spots for squid for no result.

trolled around middle head for zero.

much to my boys delight we got an escort from 2 dolphins for a couple of minutes. Most of that time he could have almost touched them, so a priceless experience.

With the fishing looking bleak we trolled out around south and then north head without a touch. My last resort to save some face we anchored up just inside north head near the rock slide and burlied with bread and we had a bit of fun catching yakkas. Any fish will do when you are 5 years old. Light spin gear with 3 pound braid kept it fun. A bonus was the two travally he pulled in by himself.

By 4 pm it was time to pull the pin with two blurters to show for our efforts.

I thought ok, last chance so clipped a small rapala on to my boys 3 foot ugly stick with 6 pound mono and started to troll back to across the harbour to head home.

THUMP! Right in the main ferry channel the little rod folds over and he's on.

With a few reminders about his pump and wind and to stay calm. At least calmer than his old man he got the fish to the boat. Released to fight another day.

We hooked one keeper tailor for his gramps to wind in and that's our day on the harbour.

He caught his first fish earlier this year, he rates Mrs Swordy up there with santa after the the package she sent him( thanks heaps) and now has a pelagic to add to his list.

Trevally cooked up really well. Under rated we recon.

I took an absolutely terrible vid of the salmon capture but it is too big to load.

    Sorry for the rambling.IMG_2032.JPGIMG_2050.JPG
