  1. Sorry about the late report but I always enjoy reading other people's reports so thought I should add mine. My brother (no 4) and myself took our new boat (well 2nd hand but recently purchased) on the 22nd. We are pretty new to boats and boy are we learning the hard way. Arrived at brother (no 3) house at padstow at 5.15am to pick up boat. He assured me it would be on the car and ready to go. He had his work xmas party the night before so I had my reservations. Surprise Surprise the boat was neatly tucked up the back of his carport and clearly not ready !! My brother(no 3) looked like death warmed up and it was obvious he was not coming. What is it about that happy feeling when seeing someone really hungover and you are not? I guess most of us have been there !! As we say, we are pretty inexperienced. So we get the boat attached and no4 starts driving. SSSSSCCRRAAPE. Forgot to life the engine up and it dragged across no3 drievway. Oh dear, poor start but no real damage. Get down to Moore Reserve boat ramp and no4 says we should just make sure the boat will kick over before launcing. Good idea I thought. Well, start it, I said. I would have thought we need keys, he said Back to padstow to wake up very hungover no3 to get jeys Then back to Oatley for a successful launch Fished under como bridge without much luck then headed down the Wooronoora and as the tide was dead low we stopped on a sandbank on a narrow part of the river and got a 40 cm flathead of a prawn. I was trying some plastics that the guy from the tackle shop on stoney creek road had recommended (nice guy, by the way) but no luck !! Headed back toward como but still in Wooronoora and found a drop off about 6m deep right next to a rocky shore and got another 38cm flathead off a pilchard. Had to head home then but had a good time. Also learning more and more about boating each time !!
  2. When I was a youngster we also used the cork reels that my dad provided (obviously his kids could not be trusted with a rod). One day one of my brothers dropped the reel into the george's river from oatley point. My oldman was livid as it floated toward como bridge. As a kid you had no idea why the loss of a cork handreel could bring a man to the point of tears. As an adult myself now I understand and my 5 month old son will not get a rod and reel for some time yet !!
  3. Hey Yowie where do you pump the nippers? I got a boat recently and want to try some fishing in the hacking Thx
  4. Thanks guys, that really is very helpful info. The trion is 2-4kg I believe so I think I might take both of your ideas and lighten up the braid. And as you say, I can transfer that braid to my new set up. Just on leaders, I have not actually been using one at all. Schoolboy error but I really do not know too much about them. From my reading, they are ideal because they are more difficult for the fish to see. It should also make it harder for the fish to break off as it is a heavier line. Is that about it? If i was to use one, would I go for mono? Have you guys any recommendations? As far as knots, for using bait, would I have knots from hook > leader > swivel > braid with running sinker For SP would it be the same excluding sinker? I actually have been fishing on and off all of my life but really never put too much thought into my gear. I have just been doing a bit of reading around I think I need to pay more attention to get the most out of every session. Sauce Head
  5. First post here so hi all I got a boat a few weeks ago and will be fishing mostly in botany bay and port hacking for bream, flathead & trevally. It will be mostly bait fishing but I am also getting the hang of soft plastics. My current set up consists of: -Flueger trion 6'6 -Daiwa exceler 1500 -6.8kg 0.20 braid I think my line is too heavy for starters, but outside of that do you guys think it is fairly suitable? Do you think it will be handle the species above? Regardless I am looking to get an additional set up and get the feeling it needs to be a little stronger. Feel free to correct me if I am on the wrong track. I have heard good things about shimano sienna (2500) & catana (6 foot 2 piece) combos. They seem to be in my price range and get pretty good reviews. Do you guys think this would pretty suitable for my needs? Do you have any other suggestions that might work? Thanks for taking the time to read Sauce Head
