  1. Why is it on Rip charts you get constant near total cloud coverage. Eg it appears to have been pretty cloudless conditions for the last few days, but looking at the Granule SST it is still 90% cloud cover showing. Makes being a subscriber pretty pointless really! P.S how was the game fishing over the week-end?
  2. Don't need anything to fancy, whatever you have handy. Fluorocarbon if you have got it, I suppose. But mono around 80Lb will do fine. Always lighter the better if the fish are shy, within reason. Even down to 50LB if the fish are small.
  3. Forgot to mention, nothing on the Kink
  4. Would be interested to hear any reports over the week-end
  5. Oh well that's gamefishing. Didn't sound any bait schools all day, which was the most surprising, not even any little scratches or patches Saw one little Sauri jump out of the water, that was it for the surface action as well.
  6. Hi Guys, Trolled (lures) along 120m line for Point Perp to the Banks, no strikes / no bait sounded. Spent a bit of time at the Banks , but was very quiet, again no bait showing or action from other boats there. Decided to go wide and trolled along the 160m line South, again , no surface action or bait schools sounded. Trolled around Drum Canyons then to J.B canyons, still nothing and no bait. Then went wide over the shelf (still the same). Then trolled all the way back to the entrance of Jervis Bay, thought there might be action in close (still no bait sounded or any strikes) So there you have it, pretty disappointing day. Water temp got to about 23 degrees and has good color to it (out wide).
  7. Check out "Matilda foundry" in QLD they have solid good quality alluminium rod holders at a reasonable price
  8. Contact "Boatbooks" in Sydney , they may be able to help
  9. For some in depth reading on some of the reels mentioned (including the 2013 Stella) go to alanhawk.com/reviews
  10. Thanks, I will check out the Live fibre range
  11. Ive got my big gear, and use it when targeting big Kingfish,(and have this in the boat anyway) but this is just for trolling for fun targeting smaller speices
  12. Thinking of getting a Calcutta 4 or 7000 ( or any other reel suggestions?) and wondering which rod to match it with. Mostly going to use it for trolling lures (fun for small kingies, salmon, tailor, bonito etc) and spooling the reel with 12lb braid or so
  13. Hi Slinky, Thanks for your informative reply and principles (good things to remember ) Just wondering how to know what grease is light and "heavier" when purchasing? I think I found my answer: Shimano have a heavier grease (Ace 2) for large reel gear assembly and a lighter grease (TBMO) for small reel gear assembly and Permalube (which they call their bearing grease, but what they supply with their reels (for bearings) is called "Bantam oil" (bit confusing)!! I think Cal's also have a light one which is purple color and their normal one is Tan color (used for drags also) Interested to try some CorrosionX , I see it online in Australia for sale at their website (some good info on their products), do any retailers sell it? it looks like good stuff , and could use it on a lot of stuff as well as reels
  14. The motors are EFI 4 stokes, I think your right , for that amount of time 2-3 months, the fuel is going to be ok, or add fuel stabilizer if still concerned.
  15. Hi all, Because of my job, I don't get to use my boat for periods of 2 months or so. What I am wondering is, the last time I use it before this period, should I disconnect the fuel line while flushing and run it till it stops (running it dry to prevent fuel destabilizing in the motor) or did i read somewhere that running fuel injected outboards dry is bad for the injectors?
  16. Smoobear,, Never had a dual sounder/plotter. Always had separate units, so not sure exactly how the switching works, but it sounds like if just using the chart plotter it wouldn't be a problem. But to be on the safe side, it would be a good idea to give Raymarine a call and double check.
  17. Hi all, Wondering what people think of the oil supplied with Shimano reals is, I have quite a few of the little bottles that come with the reels and wondered if I needed anything else or this is good enough for bearings in light spinning reels. Was also wondering for my larger reels ; TLD's and Tiagra's should I be using grease in the bearings instead of oil ? have heard it suggested that its more protective of the bearings and with these type of reels it wont affect performance (unlike a baitcaster) Just went to the Yamaha Australia website and the only marine grease I found was "Yamalube" marine grease in a 283gm black and orange striped tube. Not sure of the color of the grease but was wondering if anyone has used this? I wonder if it is the same as the grease Alan Tani uses?
  18. A word of warning: I don't think it is recommended to start your sounder with the transducer out of the water as it can damage it I had this happen to my old Lowrance and it wrecked it My new Furuno manual states this also Not sure about the Raymarine.chirps but be careful !
  19. Thanks for the info, interesting I might give them a try. I might use them to beef up a TLD 20 I intend to use for downrigging kingfish, sounds like the perfect application for them! Also the bail arm roller on threadlines, does this bush need to be greased and if so should I use oil or grease The Shimano and other reel servicing video's I have found on the net have giving the confidence and inspiration to start servicing my own reels.
  20. Hi Raiders, Most of my gear is Shimano and been very happy with it and never had any trouble but was wondering why people upgrade to Carbontex drag washers?
  21. okay thanks, by thru hull I meant they actually cut a hole and pretty much flush mount it How do you find the 260 in shallow water say 10m , what frequency do you use?
  22. Hi all, Want to purchase a Furuno 587 , but not sure which Airmar transducer to go with it? I do a bit of most types of fishing bay/ inshore reef fishing around 20m to 100m ,downrigging also some gamefishing at times (suppose that pretty much covers all depths at different times, mmm) Have looked at the TM258 and 260 for transom mounts Its a 6m plate aluminium boat and has been suggested the thru hull and 20 degree tilted element is a better mounting option? have looked at the ss164 and ss264(duel transducer) as well ???
  23. Go to the Cannon and Scotty websites and that will give you an idea of the different features on the different models . Some of the Cannons have an extendable boom from 24" to 53", I think some of the Scotty's extend to 48"
  24. The saltiga surf , the lightest in comes in is 15lb and the Sunline cast-away, the lightest is 12lb and the Sunline PE the lightest is 6lb I have used the light 4lb fireline and pretty happy with it and the price not bad Was looking at some Toray salt line light fish PE which comes in 4lb and looked very nice, anyone tried that? about $50 for 100m but looked like the bomb!
