  1. the only thing that I can suggest to start catching more fish is the fish very light. I usually fish without sinkers and leaders down to 4lb if required to entice a bite. Generally fishing middle of the day off a wharf is quite hard. Try fishing early mornings the first and last hour of sunlight will be the most productive. I do quite well just fishing with cheap coles white bread. Throw out little pieces of bread crust for burley and then throw in a piece of the white section with a small hook in it.
  2. The female squid have a wider mantle and the males have a narrower one. Fairly easy once u know how. Great catch
  3. How heavy is your leader. I wouldnt use anything heavier than 6lb fluro.
  4. I use the floating mono lines specially designed for iso fishing and flurocarbon leaders. I'm using Toray ex leaders at the moment, and they are working well.
  5. If you are going through a lot of hooks, your sinker is too heavy. It is a trade off in terms of line strength. The heavier you go the less fish you will catch. The lighter you go, the more fish you will hook but you'll lose the big ones. Look through the iso fishing videos on youtube. I fish with those guys often, as we don't usually go over 20lb leaders. I personally fish with 8-10lb leaders for drummer.
  6. Did you keep him? They taste pretty good.
  7. the squid seem to be very thick at the moment..
  8. Imagine the size of calamari rings from those beasts
  9. Congrats on your first sp bream. Don't be afraid to leave the plastic sitting on the bottom for a few seconds. They even grab them sitting. cheers
  10. I recommend going to the sand flats at low tide. Walk out the the drop off where it becomes deep and fish there unweighted. As the tide moves in, start walking back over the flats and fish there, as the fish will move in to feed. cheers Scott
  11. I would get a better second hand kayak. they get banged up pretty quick and a better second hand one would be much better than the cheap new ones. Better kayaks track better and are a lot more stable if designed for fishing. You could then sell the yak for not much loss in value when time to upgrade. If I had the choice again, I would save up some more and get a glass yak. They are so much lighter and faster. But they are expensive. I will probably upgrade mine this summer. cheers
  12. This is a long shot but if anyone has picked up a yellow shimano tackle bag at Rosebay I've lost it. cheers Scott
  13. Hi, I live quite a distance away from the coast so not sure how the beaches are looking for a fish this weekend. Anyone know if they are looking ok for a fish on either Saturday or Sunday. I can go anywhere between the central coast all the way down to the Royal national Park. The last time I went, it was covered in weed and unfishable. cheers
  14. I would give the lure a few flicks then let it sit for about 10 seconds. Flick again then let it sit. Sometimes the bream will pick it up off the bottom.
  15. cheers. that makes sense. Anyone else with a different view?
  16. It states that there is a bag limit of 20 mullet under 15cm to be kept alive for bait. Also another rule of for sea mullet to be 30cm and over. Does this mean that the smallest mullet I can keep as dead bait is 15cm and over as long as it is not a sea mullet? cheers Autocad
  17. Sorry to hear that Tony. Hope they catch the bastards. cheers Scott

    Kingie

earlier in the year I landed a 70cm kingy on 6lb line from the shore. It took a while but it can be done.
  19. fibreglass rods are generally too soft to use for sp's. When you work an sp it needs to have the action imparted to it by the rod. That is why a fast graphite rod along with braid is the best option for working sp's. However, I have caught flathead with a fibreglass rod and mono with a squidgy wriggler, as the wriggler doesn't need much action put on it as much as other sp's. cheers Autocad
  20. my understanding is that fish are able to get rid of the hook over a day or so. I don't think that it will die if it wasn't able to eat for a day or two.
  21. i haven't used those before. only the standard 1:1 ratio. Also forgot to mention that if you have a swivel as your last connection to your main line then line twist is not really an issue. cheers autocad
  22. no braid....mono only as you want to be guiding the line onto the spool at all times. you don't need an alvey rod but you need a rod with a low mount. ie reel sits close to the butt of the rod. not really a pain when you get used to it. I used to always use an alvey but now prefer spin reels for rock fishing but still use alveys for the surf. I just don't like the slow retreive of an alvey. I use lures alot now and alveys are not designed for lures. They are however great for lightly weighted baits with a long soft rod. cheers autocad
  23. that's fantastic fishing....now the won't mind when your next holiday is a fishing holiday. cheers Autocad
  24. I use a 4500h saltist off the rocks and have 300yards of 30lb braid with 20lb backing. I would save the second spool of braid and just use more mono backing. 600m of braid is a lot of line.
