  1. Apart from what has been mentioned here, the other thing that really scares me is the lack of maintenance some people are comfortable with on their boats.

I often see people launch boats from the ramp and then often struggling to get the motor started. They fiddle for a while, take the cowl off, flood it etc. Once the motor finally sputters to life you see them head straight out past the heads....

I will NOT take my boat out into ANY open water regardless of swell or other conditions if im not 100% confident that the motor will at least start and run first go under normal operating conditions (not withstanding extenuating circumstances), i guess some people just employ the "she'el be right" attitude. I can imagine scenarios where people fish close to the cliffs and the motor conks out.. good luck getting away from the rocks at that point.... an all too sad tale.

  2. Hi guys,

Im planing a fishing trip to Maroubra beach but i have never really fished the area before.

Im fairly experienced at beach fishing having fished extensively on the central coast and south coast but i have always for some reason avoided the big smoke beaches.

Having a look on google maps is giving me an idea to try next to the rocks on the north end of the beach but again, im just trying to make an educated guess.

Im also keen to catch a few beach worms and target whiting so im wondering if maroubra beach holds any.

Any tips (wether through pm or in a reply) would be much appreciated!.

  3. Theres kingies south of the hacking, rats mostly (55-60cm) but they have been taking pilchard floaters in a burley trail (targeting snapper), we had a great session last Sunday with consistent double hookups on light gear lasting throughout the morning tide change.

  4. Hi NaClH2OK9,

I used to have a reef tank then had to shut it down as it was just sucking up money, its definitley an addiction!

Your tank is only 2 years old but your using the old school tech of deep sand beds and i like it !

Thumbs up for the gold stripe maroon clowns, i see that they are either prepping a site for eggs or they are laying/caring already? The fish all look fat and healthy too!

I see you have the two bangaiis? or did the same one swim around to the powerhead on the left?, If theres two then im guessing they might be same sex since they are not hanging around each other much? (i had a pair that used to breed continuously though the male never carried the eggs through to hatching, and he used to eat like a pig)

Thanks for taking me down memory lane with that!

  5. mate, they are there scavenging for food and have probably found blood/guts/burley/bait, basically you name it.

Make sure you give the boat a good washdown after each trip and there should be no probs.

  6. Im not sure if im the only one who suffers from this but, everytime im catching squid and drop them in the live bait tank, the buggers keep on coughing up ink for the next 10 minutes, im frantically bailing to keep up with their coughing and the yakkas are thinking that the world is about to end (which it kinda does for them by the end of the day :fishing1: )

I do have a decent pump feeding the lbt and have no problems keeping slimies alive all day (which are a bit notorious for needing a higher water turnover than yakkas). its just these squid! they really give me heartache!

Can anyone give me any times on how to approach this problem?

    :horse:

  7. but usually they both result in deeper water = so fishing wise, i find its good o fish both gutters and rips.

Also, the single mistake i see people make most often when fishing gutters and rips is tossing the bait dead center in the deep.. try tossing it on the edge of the gutter/rip and you should see more hookups (in my experience anyways). :)

  8. camouflage tactic, they can and will change to different shades and patterns to try and 'blend in'. they often use colours next to them to assess what they should blend into so im guessing your one is trying to imitate the black bands on your brag board!

  9. i was hooked onto a meter plus lizard near the mouth (bycatch on a pillie cube meant for bream). 4 pound leader so you can imagine how that worked out. Got it to the boat after fighting it for 10 minutes, my father calls it for ray because the head was that big. Gently tried to coax it to the net only to realise that the head is too big (i shold say too wide) for the standard fishing net! it swims back down, i applied a bit of pressure to try get it to the surface and thats where the flatties teeth did their job.

I am a very calm person usually but at that point i managed to throw my hat and sunnies across the boat full force, i sat down staring at my feet for 5 minutes in complete silence before my father in law breaks the silence with "that is the biggest flathead i have ever seen, noone is ever going to believe us its head couldnt fit in the net"

all i could say for the next 30 minutes was "we did everything right, i cant understand it" and "if only........"

will never forget that moment in my life and i get the same feelings flooding back just writing this now....
