  1. Great catch Kane, good work Jackets and flatties make for great eating.
  2. Hi Lesta, Used to fish there a lot but only out of a boat, at the first few bays downstream from the area you will be. I had most success using unweighted strips of steak near the shore, fishing the first few hours after sundown (especiall if high tide). Never came back without a feed. Steak is a great bait as it is tough and the bream around there really like it. One summer night I spied some prawns near the shore and scooped them up and tried half the lines with live prawns and the other half with steak. The steak outfished the prawns by about 2 to 1! Hope this info helps. Cheers.
  3. I can't believe all this!!! Surely people have the right to reveal a spot or not. To all you gun Jew on SP's fisherfolk please keep posting - even without pics if you want! I am probably like a lot of others who are encouraged by hearing of great fish being caught - it gives me hope of getting one on my next outing! Any info, no matter how limited, is better than no info at all. Can we all forgive, forget and move on?
  4. I do like the Idea of a slam - how about inshore pelagic slam - say salmon, tailor, kingfish, bonito, frigate ? I think that we should forget lengths and weight. Just post photos of the relevant species and when and where caught. Could have 'lure slam' 'bait slam' and 'fly slam' ('sp slam'?) but may just complicate things - leave it up to the individual to do this if they want. Having it run for the calendar year is also a great idea. Gives a chance for those of us who don't get out so often to have a chance to get on the board. Another idea - my brother in law and I have made up a challenge - we call the 'daily double' A legal size king and jew in the one outing. We haven't got there yet... Cheers.
  5. WOW I think I may have had muddies destroy my witches hat nets from time to time in berowra creek. The bait is gone or close to it and the nylon net is shredded. Does anybody this is the case? Do I need to use some kind of chicken wire box like cage contraption to catch them? Cheers
  6. Gee you guys crack me up. I was sad about not being able to get out this weekend till I read this!!!
  7. Have a look at this article on snopes (debunking website) http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/sharkbait.asp Looks like this is a bit of a media beat up (as is often the case with these things).
  8. A 4 hour battle with a giant squid - what a fight! However it was just attached to a float... Link to the article: SMH Giant Squid How long until someone lands one of these? What is the biggest squid ever landed using rod and reel? IGFA records? Cheers
  9. Congrats appoooh. Sounds like a top session. With all the action you have been having lately I am tempted to sell my boat and come and join you on the rocks...
  10. I caught a couple of massive carp on lures in the upper reaches a few summers ago. Gee they went hard ... The lake gets shallow and mucky in the upper reaches - perfect for mud sucking football fish but not bass. I reckon stick to the lower reaches, the hour round trip to the end of the lake is better spent or ...
  11. Never mind appoooh. A big fish hooked and lost is better than no fish at all. I fished for 6+ hours off the beach over the weekend for one tiny (10 cm) dart! Give me a big pig bust up anyday...
  12. I hope my licence fees aren't going into paying that guys salary ... Thankfully all of the half dozen times I have been checked the fisheries officers have been curteous and professional. Unfortunately it only takes one bad one to spoil it for the rest.
  13. Yep guys, cooked up the squid for my in laws Sat evening. Went down an absolute treat cut into rings with a light coating of seasoned flour and 1 min each side in hot pan with olive oil. Who's the favourite son in law then? appoooh - My brother put out a bit of burley (but wasn't too much left by that stage ). Any kelpy spot in the harbour should have some squid in residence. Just keep moving till you find some willing to play. I caught all these near you favourite harbour rock spot ...
  14. Very true appoooh. I thought the same myself. But just think of the number of time that school of salmon or tailor have been just out of casting range... Hmmmm, I might study some marine charts for any good reefs a few hundred meters off the coast
  15. I am going beach fishing next weekend with a few friends. One of them is not very good at casting, and also little crazy. What do you think of his idea of using a spud gun to fire his bait out: Potato Cannon Fishing Anyone ever tried it? I will be taking photos - I might post them.
  16. Took my Dad and brother out for session chasing sambos. We launched at Roseville, didn't see any bird or fish activity down middle harbour, or the main harbour. Headed around North head to be greeted by thousands of flocking seagulls as the sun rose above the horison. A lovely sight - but there were no salmon busting up. We mooched around for half an hour with about 10 or so other boats till finally a large school of salmon started busting up at the base of the cliffs. Managed to get into one on a 7g metal before the school was put down by some morons trolling through the middle of it. Unfortunately lost the fish when the snap swivel opened up! Have been using snaps for 10 years and never had that happen before... About this time my brother got seasick, poor guy was out of action for the next 4 hours, but he didn't want us to stop fishing on his behalf. Anyway, the schools were busting up less and less, we had a few more hits but no hookups (but we did 4 guys hooked up at the same time out of the one boat! - we later discovered they were using stickbaits - 4 inch in purple fleck I think), we reverted to trolling minnows. My Dad ended up landing one out of a total of 5 good hookups! (Happy fathers day). Next time will have to improve the conversion ratio ... We gave up soon after hooking up to a kayaker who crossed our troll lines. Wow he sure put up a good fight, but we had to snip the line and let him go ... be on the lookout for a kayak with a yo zuri minnow embedded in the rear end. We ended up jigging for some squid in the harbour. Got a few for dinner - YUM YUM. We often saw them hit the jigs under the boat. Amazing sight fishing - exceptional clarity in 8 meters of water could clearly see the bottom. The rain may have dirtied things up a little now. No birds or fish action in the harbour or up middle harbour on the way home. My brother felt better as soon as we got into more sheltered water near the spit. A lovely day out for all (even my brother says he liked it - crazy kid).
  17. I'll second that jocool
  18. Great Jew - give me one of those over a hairtail anytime (not that I have have caught either species )
  19. Congrats to your mate bear - despite more than a dozen attempts at Jew I have never got one! only an undersized soapy when fishing for bream in the hawkesbury. Everyone I take out seems to get one though ... brother in law, friends, even friends girlfriend!!!!!!!

    Boat Name

I have recently named my boat (after only 5 or so years of ownership) and am seeking advice on how to affix the name to the boat. It is an aluminium painted tinnie - I was thinking of painting it on with some auto paint. Any info on how others have done it would be appreciated.
  21. I went out with Craig a couple of months back and it was much the same - a lot of squid initially but then nothing eating the squid. What made it hard was that the other fishabout boat drifted past us - merely 20m away - and had multiple hookups on good kings . The other boat got 7 and we didn't even get a bite. However I would still HIGHLY recommend going out with him as he is a wealth of knowlege and is well worth the money for the info gained. I just posted for the first time on this site yesterday with pics of the first king I have caught - thanks be largely to Mr McGill And no I am not being paid for this advert
  22. Nothing wrong with adding a bit of style to fishing is there bluecod ! I have a few old business shirts I wear when on the water - protect from the sun without wearing sunscreen. Next time I take some picks with me wearing the full uniform; sunnies and a white wrap around cap. Welcome to another day in my office! Hi Narralakes - the salmon was caught upstream of bantry bay on the northside in the last bay before the 8 knot zone - it was the only surface action I saw all day. They were feeding on whitebait. A bit different from a few months ago when there were anchovies all through middle harbour with surface action as far as the eye could see ...
  23. After about a dozen (or more ) shots at Sydney Kings finally got onto one! On the water at 7am quick run down to middle head, 4 squid in the bag and on to the wedding cakes just after 9am. Wow what a perfectly calm and beautiful day on the harbour. Huge school of yakkas at eastern wedding cake, caught a dozen and put them down as bait as the squid was getting pecked by small reddies. One big hit no hook up then half hour later into my first kingie! Wow what a fight - and only just legal 60cm! Moved to new yellow and had 2 big hookups to much larger kings, hooks pulled on one, the second busted the main line (10kg) like cotton . Oh well I will set strike drag a bit softer next time .... On the way back up middle harbour mid afternoon came across a school of salmon - got one on a 10g raider before they went down. Didn't have time to wait for them to come up again - had to get out to beat peak hour rush. Oh it is good to have the day off work fishn' with my dad and first king to top it all off!!!
