  1. Hey mate. I have never tried it but the weedy, shallow flats just on the north side of the bridge look like they would hold squid and I think they would be your best bet around the area. I have always spent more time chasing poddy mullet . If your keen to use live bait I would say try poddys for sure off the beach or the wall (harbour side) or...live prawns and nippers go sick off the ferry terminal at night for thumper bream!! Use an extremely small or no sinker and you'll be sweet!!
  2. Do you care if i's edible or not?? Mullet slabs at night hardly ever fail to attract some decent sized sharks off the beach side of Stokton wall.
  3. Cheers guys. I was thinking that they might have been traveling down the coast as they were in such numbers and I hadn't seen any in previous weeks. I had one out as a livie but, unfortunately, no takers. I have eaten them before too and they weren't too bad but on this occasion I was after larger fry. That's promising to hear that they travel with cobes and frigates.
  4. Hi all. Got onto one of my ledges over the weekend for a live baiting session. Managed a pool full of yakka's in good enough time. Trouble was, every yakka was getting nailed by Watsons leaping bonnies. I eventually got some more appealing fish but they were few and far between amongst the WLB's. Is there anyone that could explain to me a little something about this fish? Do they migrate down the coast at this time of year and do they travel with other fish? What's going on, I have never seen so many!
  5. Every single yakka I have been getting off the rocks up here lately has had one in its mouth!! I'm not sure how I'll get them to ya but I'll try. Some of them have been really big lately too - up to 50mm!! I wouldn't mind reading your report when your done if thats cool?
  6. Hey mate. The rig I use off the rocks is: Thread a bobby or torpedo flot onto your main line. Tie a double of about 8 ft above the float (so that the float slides is 'trapped" in the double) using a plait knot. Tie the bottom end of the double to a 30-60 lb trace using an albright knot and tie the trace to your hook(s). I use superglue on the plait but it isn't needed on the other knots. It is a simple rig but works well.
  7. Hey Mate, . You have come to the right place for help. What type of fish are you after? The breakwall at the moment is producing plenty of Jewies. A run up tide on dusk with a livie or slab of mullet into the harbour side of the wall and your in with a good shot. The beach fisehes well throughout the year, depending on what your after will depend on your gear and bait. You need to get at least north of the sea-wall so look for the soccer fields on the way into stoko. On their north bondary is a 'track' that you can drive down in a car, it will take you to the beach. Under the bridge is good for flathead, bream and whiting. If you need more specific information or anything let me know. Daniel
  8. Haha. Not a dumb question at all - is there such a thing anyway?. To my understanding: * Fresh water fish hydrate by osmosis in their gills. * Marine fish hydration is from the water content in the food the eat and from the sea water they take in when they engulf their food. Fish have better systems than humans for filtering salt so the sea water is effectively filtered by their kidneys. Please correct me if I'm wrong but I hope this is correct and hope it helps.
  9. I fish off a breakwall for Jew at night. There is always a strong current and in the past I have had no luck with using live bait so haven't used it now for a while. When I have tried to use live bait they have always either swam me into a snag or twisted my rig into oblivion. I am wondering what rig suggestion people think I could use?
  10. Just letting you all know i just saw a guy catch a large-mouth bass at spot-x.
  11. Hi Raiders. I have just purchased a new reel and am wondering what line everyone recons I should put on it. Its a Daiwa LD 50H which will replace my antique Seascape, which still works great, just time for a change. It will be used off the beach for Jews and sharks, as well as off the rocks for Jews, Kings, Tuna etc. I mainly use bait either live or dead and floated or cast rather than lures. What do you all think? Cheers.
  12. Yeah true and I have caught squid there as well.
  13. Hey Mate, Try cliffton Gardens. Its only about half an hour away from you and is a top spot. Do a search for it here and I'm sure you will get excited. Apart from that, you could basically walk over to glebe at night, burley up and hook some decent bream, just don't eat them.
  14. Thanks. Heading off from Haberfield. Is this point at Botany in the street directory?
  15. Ive been fishing Clifton heaps lately with much fun and excitment. The thing is, im looking to go fishing on Sunday and cant even imagine how I would get there with the bridge being closed. The other way will be hectic too. Im after some other alternative options for a similar style of fishing ie warf or wall, good fishing with palagics or somewhere where I can throw a few livies. Will travel. If someone could help me out it would be greatly appreciated.
  16. Hi, Im no Jewie expert by any means but have had some success. Jewfish are a fish that bring great disscussion on this site so be prepared to take in many different angles. Ill give you my 2 bob. Firstly, what bait are you using? I have had most success on live or fresh poddy muddy, or even the bigger river mullut. If its a fresh poddy I butterfly it and if its a big one I usually use a whole fillet. I have also caught them on fresh, whole peeled prawns or worms. The tide is very important. They tend to be much more active on the rising or high tide. I have actually never caught a Jewie on low tide. I have had most luck at night. One topic that raises the emotions on this site is moon cycles. Personally, I feel they are more active on a growing or full moon. But that is a whole other story and doesnt need to be disscussed here. Check this topic out http://www.fishraider.com.au/Invision/inde...showtopic=17977 There is a post on there by "Jewhunter" which is well worth reading. You may also wish to PM him to ask for his advise. Stick to your holes around the entrance to rivers on a big running tide at night near a full moon. You have to be patient. When I first started fishing for Jewies I used to spend all night. Long nights for no bites or just sharks and rays. Eventually you pick up on them. Keep at it. Youll get them! Let me know how things go.
  17. I fish land-based, what do you think the ebst rig is for land based? As I obviosly need to cast the squid a fair distance at times.
  18. Cheers. They dont have to go too far, usually just a short trip from Balmain area over the bridge to middle harbour area, say 20 minutes. Ill check out that supercheap gizmo. Otherwise ill just buy a little pump from Freddy's.
  19. How does everyone transport their livies (squid, yaccas... etc) in the car?
  20. Im currently using a glow in the dark type jig. One other thing, if your getting follows, is there any way to increase the liklyhood of a strike? Like with the palagics, if you wind a bit faster they usually hit it. If a squid is chasing, is it best to stop winding, wind faster, or just keep going how you were?
  21. Yeah mate there are kings. Im not familiar with the lake or Swansea but grew up fishing Newcastle harbour. Ive tried to mark out a bit of a map for you...Your best bet for kings is to anchor up near any of the marker boys at the entrance to the harbour (red dots) and use your usual methods. You can get livies on the wreck (blue dot), located on the Northern side of the Northern (Stokton) breakwall. There is also a large reef system (green line) that runs along the northern side of the southern (Nobby's) breakwall that produces good catches. Palagics hold well in Stokton bight (the yellow shaded area). Stokton bridge (white shading) produces good jewies, you best bet for the jews is to get your slimies or yakas from the wreck above. There is a god hole also, in the vacinity of the purple shaded area. Apart from that, thereis plenty of oyster leases that hold good bream just north of Stockton bridge. I hope you can understand all this and hope it helps somewhat. Let me know how you go. Cheers Daniel
  22. Thanks mate, maybe im not getting as many hits as i think. Do i need to wind a little faster to keep it off the weed? What im doing now is winding constantly but very slowly. I get allot more cuttlefish than squid too, is that something im causing or is that just that they are more prevalent in the spot im fishing?
  23. Hi. I have another squid question. I can locate the squid etc. I am having trouble, in that I only can convert about 10% of hits to squid . I either can't hook up properly, lose the squid on the way in, or lose it on the way up. Should i speed up or slow down when i feel a hit? Once its hooked, what speed should i bring it in at? Thanks in advance.
