  1. u got loch ness in that video, i dont know about you but i would rather go head first in the water than let some1 else take the rod off me......

You can see how quick they all scattered as soon as it snapped.

    Btw,

my 2 c was it was a Ray.

  2. G'day raiders

We need an extra fisho for this sat 12th june.

heading out of terrigal. Jigging for kings.

cost $150 head all gear supplied.

    PM me if your interested.

    or call 0425 242 014

    Tight lines Anthony

    Mate

im supposed to go on the 13th up that way, but looking by the forecast the only jigging we will be doing on the weekend is jigging a Tea Bag into our mug......

hope it forecast gets better though, they are out there in numbers

  3. You don't need to pull the drag system apart to check it. Just test it by pulling line off the reel under drag. As others have said it is a good casting reel and suited to heavy beach fishing. With all the brake blocks in it is very hard to backlash. It's a good reel for bottom bashing. Just be careful with braid as there is quite a gap betwen the spool and frame (line less than 0.35mm can slip behind).

    Good reels,

BUT doesnt have the drag pressure <5kg

Saying this though i own both a ABU 7000 and also the ABU 10000BG, both great but i wish the ratios were higher

  4. dude - there are so many different schools of thought on this...

i like to let the fish run until i feel a secondary bump on the line - i believe that this is the fish swallowing the bait propoerly, as the first hit (with yakka/slimey) is when the king grabs it and runs away from his mates. when that second bump happens, it's the fish swallowing the bait right down. Employing this technique has seen my hook up rate go from 1 in 4 to almost 4 in 4. make sure your hook point is totally exposed when you bait up AND like roosterman said, make sure that your overhead is in strike drag OR has at least enough pressure to start setting the hook from the strike.

remember - big hook big fish, small hook ALL fish... don't be afraid to use 3/0 live bait hooks - they always seem to hit them mark!

    3/0 live baiting????

    Letting a king run????

i dont know but i think your fishing for whiting..... not kings

  5. thanks guys.

I have been thinking about doing it for a while.

When i jigged Samson fish in WA with Al Bevan, he told me about deeper reef systems where they jig hapukas regularly in water up to 250m deep. I have caught a hapuka at browns once on bait. I've always wanted to jig browns and have tried a few times before by tying 2 x 400gm jig together and sending them to the bottom with no success of hitting bottom due to wind and current.

On sunday we started a cube trail a couple of miles east of the mountain at midday. after 2 hours of cubing i realised that we only drifted a few hundred meters. We were drifting north east with the slight westerly.

    there was absolutely no current.

We went for a troll for a couple of hours and i was keen to have a jig as i knew it was the right day to hit bottom, and i knew a 400gm jig will do the job.

i reversed the boat every now and then to keep the line as vertical as possible.

i think it took something between 3-5 minutes to hit bottom - i did not use any additional weight or bait, i am a purist when it comes to jigging :)

i didnt jig too quick, 20m up then back to the bottom.

The fish had a go twice before it hooked up. People who bottom bash browns with braid will tell you that you feel EVERYTHING.

I must say i was very nervous about losing the fish half way up ... i would have cried!

I am rigging up an outfit for my next personal challenge... hopefully it will come to plan..

    Tony

    Tsk Tsk Tsk

No mention of the skipper who kept the boat in perfect position for your line to follow the jig straight down??? come on Tony.....share some of the credit around :) :)

  6. Well done Tony.....

Thats got to be a 1st....jigging browns....

a little birdy told me you jigged a nice fish, you get full points for being able to pull that fish up from the bottom....Well done....

    Also.....

nice seeing a post from you again, if only you post half the fish you catch... people will freak out

  7. Greg

i used to hit long reef in a 4.1m Alf Stessl with a 30hp on the back, obviously the days had to be picked but shouldnt be a problem @ all...

As for squid...... they really are EVERYWHERE!!!..... just find shallow areas, rocky, kelp or grassy areas are all sure things, a good place to start would be quarrintine bay. Saying that i used to think that there was "Secret" squid spots, but i have caught them everywhere, Balmoral is another popular spot. Obviously every1 has their little spot X that performs well and every now and then the surprise by catch, i caught 2 squid on Fri 50cm+ whilst fishing for kings.....silly creatures.

Good luck with the snapper, let us know how you go.

  8. Dates are looking like Sat 27th June (full day) and Sat 4th July (2 - 4 hrs)

  10. Mate i wouldn't gaff a shark like that with a gaff like that.

Looks like all it would do is P him off.

Its a flying gaff..... i dont know about you but i dont want to holding onto a gaff with a angry shark on the other end.

Ant pics of the kings that made it to the boat?

i took one, ill post it on soon

  11. Went Jigging yesterday, wont really get into it much except for the following.... Whilst Struggling with a solid solid king i felt a different *Thud* on the rod.... not the back breaking runs of a king..... but of a shark... he stole my kingy, mind you this fish was easy a 1m fish, so i struggled to fight to get my fish back to try to get it out of its jaws.....Then we ended up hooking the Shark in the side of the mouth...

What happened next was a 45 min battle with the shark... we got it boat side were about to bring it in and TWANG!!.... oh well so is fishing.

We lost about 10 quality kings to sharks yesterday at various locations.. but still did ok. hope you like the pics

  12. Hey guys.

Went to a particular tackle shop today. & Picked up 5 Yajamito squid jigs.

    2 Orange 2 Pink & 1 Gold

Are these any good ? Anyone had any luck on them. Do they fall apart like the cheap ones ? They were $6.40 down from $14

    Cheers.

    Mate

    They are fine...

i got 10 of them myself yesterday.... they are made by Yamashita, just a cheaper version

work great and great sink rate

  13. Mate your boat looks great. I to am an owner of a pongrass surfmaster. They are good strong solid boats.

I mainly fish the harbour with my brother and most of our fishing is done within the heads. I dont see the need to venture outside but thats not to say that in the right conditions and the right company it can not be done in our boats. Mate you must feel confident in your abilities and always understand that things could change in a flash. Learn to read the sea and know your limits and the boats limits.

Just go out there mate and have fun, be sensible and stay safe. Happy fishing raider.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Transom is in good nick and the boat is going through a TOTAL fitout

just questioning whether i could get to the like of Browns in this thing.

    Thanks again

    hi Yabbiehunter,

sent ya a pm before i read this..

yr boat looks nice.... wanna swap... just kidding.....

the older hulls were alot thicker with glass and stronger than ones produced today...

as has been said , get confidence in your rig, team up with someone for safety and enjoy your new pride an joy...

always get all things checked out regardless on whether you go outside or not as once on the water its not a nice feeling looking for help if motors carked it or hull lets ya down...

hows the transome in it,looks good in pic but if its never been replaced it may need attention if its had a hard life with previous owners.

simple easy tests in lifting leg on motor looking for transom flexing and tapping hull for dead sound etc..

i would also re do the bung holes and this may show if transomes sucked alot of water up...lot of older boats(mine included) drilled drainholes then wacked bung fittings etc without sealing the cavity and this is one of main ways even looked after boats get transom rot...

in saying this im no expert so get the proper advice if you have any doubts....

    good luck and have fun..

    cheers...steve.....

    Got your PM Thank you.

With the Rig like you mentioned ill take it 1 day @ a time.

The thing seems ok. but looks can be decieving.

    Thanks again for the input

  14. Hey all

I recently purchased a Pongrass 5.8m CC fibreglass and was hoping to head offshore with it. After discussions with a close friend of mine, he advised me that maybe this boat is not fit to fish "Wide", Basicially what i am after is......

Where would i find information about this boat and/or its limitations??

I understand everyone gets to know their boat, but i wanna be sure this thing is right for the bruising it is going to cop offshore

    Cheers

  15. When you say 5-6 mt , you have to be more specific ,sea transport cost goes on cubic mts RO-RO , to give you an indication allow about $200 us per cubic mt + land transport + shrinkwrapping.

Measure the length of the combo from the tip of the coupling to the tip of the leg when its tilted up in trasport possition X the widest part of the combo X the highest part of the combo and you get the cubic mts .

You will have to pay GST (10%) on the purchase price of the rig + US land transport + sea transport .

When she gets here Port Kembla in your case ( as you are in Sydney) you will pay your customs agent say $150-200 to act for you + all goverment charges like every entry costs you $$ and Q/T will want the rig steam cleaned , all up expect say $1000-1500. including tow to Q/T for cleaning. You won't have to pay import duty if you do supply the goverment with

"Australia-United States Free Trade Agreement (AUSFTA)

    STATEMENT OF UNITED STATES ORIGIN"

When she is released from customs and Q/T , after you pay everyone and the goverment GST , its up to you how you tow it to whereever you want , keep in mind the trailer is unregistered.

You won't need to comply the boat ( just to verify the HIN , about $35) but you will need to comply the trailer and it can be tricky, depending on the trailer.

When you find the combo you want to buy you need to apply for import approval for the trailer ( not needed for boat/engine), so you need to pay $50 to Canberra and supply the trailer details and VIN with your application.

Whatever you do don't ship before you get the approval, when you get your approval, check to make sure the numbers are correct, then you can ship it .

Keep in mind the trailer width must not be greater than 2.5 mts ( not even 5 mm) , you will have to change the lights as they don't comply and depending on the GVM othet stuff as well . If under 2 t GVM , you only need lights and brakes on one exle . If over 2 T GVM , you need brakes on all wheels and a brakeaway system . When all that is done you will need a weighbridge ticket and blue slip if under 2 T gvm , if over 2 T you need a brown slip, same as blue but fewer places do them . Don't even think of importing a trailer with over 4.5 T GVM, can be done but very hard.

When you have your blue/brown , take that to RTA with the bill of sale and pay the fees ( rego fee and 3% stamp duty) to get it registered . The boat is much easier , just take the HIN verification and bill of sale to Maratime and pay the rego fee and you are done .

Its all as easy as that but with our $ well under 80 cents its not worth it , you can buy the boat here cheaper.

By the way don't think that you will cheat on GST by telling customs you bought the combo for half waht you actualy paid by giving them a bill of sale for that amount, if they suspect that you cheated they will ask for your bank account details. Worse case they will take your rig and of fine you .

If you still want to go ahead and import I can put you on to a good transport mod in USA that will handle the export side of things for you including US land and sea up to Port Kembla .

Thank you Very much for the detailed information, it has shed light on a grey area for me, i think i will wait for the dollar to climb once again (90c+) and then look.... The amount of boats makers available in the US is absolute crazy, also i think they are miles ahead of Aus builders.

    Again thank you

  16. Hi All

I have been looking at importing a american boat for some time now and to be honest i am waiting for the dollar to climb again before i look in more detail, but i wanted to know if anyone out there knew what costs were involved in importing a boat from the U.S looking at a 5-6M Fibreglass.

    Delivery Cost?

    Tax?

    Gst?

    Rego?

    Compliance (If any)

Other hidden cost, i am trying to evaluate if it is viable, or i just shut up and buy 1 through a dealer here... Any help would be appreciated.

    Yabbie
