  1. Hi Raiders

Only did a little bit of fishing over the weekend.

One session up at trout for only 2 little tackers on Thursday, Saturday got the target species of a jew out of the Parra but was only a pup around 2kgs and a few blackfish late Monday arvo.

Didn't get the camera out as they werent of photo standards......

Sunday night with that electrical storm that past through, it was a great opportunity to get the DSLR out and try take some lightning shots.

It's a little harder than I thought but it is only my second go at it.

Here's my favorite of the night.

    post-3563-070038300 1334029500_thumb.jpg

  2. For a light stick ya can't go passed the Steez Chilidog. I have 2 of these and ones got a 3000 Branzino 20lb braid and the other with a 3000 Stella loaded with 11lb.

I use these for vibing for jews and barra and 1/4-1/2oz jig heads snappering.

Perfect jew n snapper stick for around Sydney.

Personally I prefer a stick with even more grunt tho. Just never know when that fish of a life time grabs ya lure.....

My next club up from the chilli is the Millerods beast buster control freaks and again loaded with a branzino but this time 30lb braid.

This stick could catch near everything in Sydney I recon!

Nice snapper to, got to love Port for it's snappering!

  3. Barra are cool but there's to many fish in the sea and so many that pull harder and eat surface more consistantly.

I like fishing with Jas and I think I'll keep my barra experiences there on a more sociable level now that I have caught my 1m goal.(took me like 5 trips to get it and 2 99's.) n that's just with Jas! Bloody barra have cost me a fortune!

At the moment I like fly, I use to do it but fell into the bream thing and dropped it.

Now, back again the fly rods are back out. Relearning the cast and so on. Gt's are always going to be a fav and hard to turn down a trip chasing them. I want a monster one so bad....

My fishing at the moment is pretty diverse, pretty cool that many of the things help one another. My casting at the moment is very relaxed but still gets distance as I feel the rods load better and punching in the sweet spot after casting the fly again where the feel is so important.

My goal is to get better at casting the fly and then when good enough, chase a tarpon..... I think I have been watching to many fly DVD's and man I gotta get me some of that action!:biggrin2:

  4. after seeing where exmouth is situated i reckon its GTs your after, yay?

GT's, sails, I think we are wanting a session with the long wands chasing permit and bones off the flats, Coral trout, golden trevs, monster dollies, blue marlin and all of them other line burners on the reefs.

Night time will be bull sharks off the back jetty of our house we have booked.....

Aw sugar now ya got me excited! :ranting2:

  5. Just looked at the water levels at Lake Monduran......major flooding with 2m over the spillway. Looks like another tough year in the southern Barra Dams :1badmood: , but the rivers below will get a refresh and more Barra :biggrin2:

I was informed that the river below Monduran is hard to get to and not as many fish compared to the Boyne River.

Jas doesnt even charter anymore because of the barra fishing is so poor. He thinks that if you want to go catch 80cm barra go NT and catch 100 a day as thats all thats left!

The metre plus ones are so far in between it's just not a viable option. It'll be criminal to take peoples money when it's that hard.....

Peter Faust dam is an option and is ment to be still fishing very well.....

  6. I have seen heaps of small ones on the Gold coast, that one was a big one and ate a 2" Hawg. I have also seen small ones in Cowan and out the back of mums in the Parra. They seem to like the clear deep waters and swim the edge in 2's or 3's. The one pictured had fins about 2 feet long

  7. you get around dont ya lol,

nice barra boys would looove to target them one day, they remind me of giant bass,

do they head for the snags like bass once hooked?

I do try my best! :biggrin2:

NEXT trip planned is WA part II at the end of May, Exxy is about to be RAIDED by a few of us! Some are a little bit excited.......

Me, I dont like thinking about it or talking about it. Been on to many trips to be stuffed by weather, now I just take em as they come!

The barra know where to brick you, especially when your fishing bridge pylons!

We had 2 massive bust offs didnt even get a wind!

  8. Yeah that was the Boyne, the others were the Colliope and some little water way that runs under the HWY, pretty cool riding the rapids in a Skeeter with leccy power only

I tell ya that sticker biz is way harder than it looks! I tried to put a little bit of edging on, Rich puts 4 pieces on in my one and he had to redo my bit cause I had a bubble! :ranting2:

The water temps were dropping as the dams are at 100% so any rain went over the wall.... Even during our stay it dropped by 3 degrees. Was only a balmy 27 lol

  9. Ross reels are nice, so over priced here tho! like double......

I had a ross 6-7 for a while. Richards put it to use now. Great value for sure.

I'm a bit of a sucker with the Abels, always wanted one and now I can afford them, why not....

I have a 9,7,5 and about to receive a 3wt and all in custom paint.

Rods I'm similar, hard to move away from a brand when you have never had problems with in the past. Only other I have owned before are the Loomis's which are really on par with Sage imo.

The TXFL was choosen as I wanted something a little slower than the XI2 n3's I have, just for a more suttle presentation.

  10. I'll second that Caddis I am a friendly fly fisher chap except when in cranky old man blackfish mode (not often these days) I'll give everyone a G'day and a nod! By the way what constitutes $3000 work of fly gear is that just the rod and reel or your full kit please, I know a Nick Taransky bamboo rod will or a T&T bamboo.......but man my fly kit all up totals out at $1500 and thats the rod reel line waders tippet and flys and sunnies!!!!!!!

Buy a Deyoung series reel and a XI3 rod in this country will get you near that. Put line on it and you'd be there.:1yikes:

  11. Yeah Chris, fish a fish pattern. I have tied up some smaller saltwater deceivers similar to a bass minnow for that purpose.

My waders have finally turned up so up to TCD real soon for the first time IN the water!

We all want to catch one of them trophys. Ya have to think a fish that big cant just live off insects. They have to be feeding on larger pray!

Small fish has to be the NEXT in line....

  12. That's fishing and that's what makes me go. If it was easy, I don't think I would put so much effort and time into it.

there so so many "it could be..." in fishing.....

For instance, up in Gladdy, session one. I get 2 hits and end the session on a donut.

Session 2, My mate Jas stops me, makes me watch his retrieval saying I'm lifting to much, from a horizontal rod, 9 oclock, i'd lift to 11-12oclock, he was from 9-1030.

First cast doing his retieve, I hook up!

TCD for us so far, cooler months have out fished the warm ones.

Winter they seemed to like a rip retrieve looking for a reaction bite, in this warm water we have had to slow right down to get any action....

I like ya thinking on the food thing but the food is always there....

Maybe they are only focusing on one type of food?

I know the bass minnow is outfishing the wriggler ATM, maybe they have turned to fish to eat?

one thing I was thinking, when the water level was lower, they were more concentrated, now being high there is more water with the same amount of fish.....

Also we have all seen the fish cruising the banks, I don't think the waters to warm as they are in such shallow water only 1m off the bank. This summers been so average with not many warm days at all, I know the salt hasent hit the usual 27degrees that it is usually sitting at at this time of year in the harbour. It's only been 23-24....

  13. Did a run up to Gladstone over the last few days.

Rich had a job to do up there so a quick few phone calls to a mate a bed a few days fishing were planned.

We arrived Thursday morning with beautiful sunny conditions with a light westerly. We got into the job wrapping a boat up n buy lunch time it was hot, damn hot!

Punching down the waters I watched Rich do his magic from the comfort of the shade. First time I have sat and watched the process, impressive!

    Final product was sweeeeet!

    Epic fail....

    post-3563-055783000 1332203776_thumb.jpg

Been having a mushroom photo comp with a friend of late.

    post-3563-049552000 1332203786_thumb.jpg

Now with a place thats had 3 weeks of stable weather with 3-5kn varible winds n sunny conditions, what do you think when the southerners come up?

    :ranting2:

Of coarse day one when we had things to do would be crackers, then 20-35kn from the south with rain!

All plans to chase GT's and coral trout went out the window!

We didnt want to waste opportunity so we went out for a few quickies chasing barras in the salt.

The dams up that way have still not recovered from the floods last year and again overflowed 2 months ago.

They still have a few years to get back to former glory.....

We ended up catching 6 barra in total and lost a few plus missed several hook ups.....

    Fishing was tuff!

Here are a couple of em.

Rich caught this one late one arvo

    post-3563-035762500 1332203791_thumb.jpg

I got this one second cast of the day.

    post-3563-013556500 1332203797_thumb.jpg

It was tuff work casting tight along bridge pylons contending with 25kn winds straight into your face plus 3-4kn s of current.

Only 25% of your casts would land sweet, most would tangle ya tranny on the trebbles and leader as it spun once the wind catches it. Bloody wind!

Oh well a few barra is better than none plus it was great just getting away and hanging out with the blokes!

A different water way one arvo.
