Hi, im just wondering if anyone can help me with a few beach fishing pointers.
I'm new to it all so I was wondering if people could answer a few questions i have.
I'm starting off targeting bread and butter species so here goes.
1. Do tides really matter? Whats the best tide to fish off the beaches? Ill fish Cronulla beach
2. What rig do I use? Normally my sinker gets twisted above the mainline where the swivel meets the lead.
3. What areas do I fish for bream and whiting? I've been told that I dont need to fish gutters but im not too sure?
Any other pointers would be greatly appreciated!

Nice one! ill have to get one, where'd you get it from?
-
Nice one mate!
Its a massive thrill to get a King on bream/flathead gear, i managed one that went 74cm on 4lb great fun!
I had a T-curve too but it got stolen, do you mind me asking what you paid for yours?
-
Shimano stradic 1000fi, Shimano T curve tournament and a rapala bag full of SPs, HBs and jigheads.
Cronulla area.

Thanks for the replies guys, all has been considered and I think ill keep using braid with a long mono leader.
Also one other thing,
Whats the best tide to target squid?
I've had most success in low levels of light, and jetties with flood lights. But I really haven't taken much notice of tides.
Is water movement good and what is the best tide to fish them?

Hi was just wondering what the general consensus is when fishing for squid? Its getting cold so I decided id target squid this season
Just a couple of questions,
1. What line should I use? Mono or Braid, at the moment im using braid but when the squid pulls it doesnt give anything and the hooks pull quiet a bit, could this be due to the minimal stretch in the braided line?
2. What rod should I use? Im using a T-curve bream plastic rod atm, that is fairly stiff, should I be using a rod that is more sensitive? As in more softer in the tip?
3. Normally I fish waters that are around 2-5m deep, considering id like to fish for medium to large squid what size and weight jig should I use? Keeping in mind that im fishing weed beds with some current?
Anyway guys, if you could please answer my questions it would be greatly appreciated!

I reckon
the telegraph people are a joke

Squid Hunter
there is a reason for that.

You serious?
Never seen this beofre.
so it has nothing to do with the water being poluted
Nothing to do with water pollution.

Hi Billyd
Nice fish but at that size it was probably to old to survive the fight. are they good eating?
where was it caught the bridge looks alot like the singing bridge in hawks nest think im wrong though
gez it would be nice to have a world record catch of any fish one can dream i guess
thanks for sharing
Adzzy
Nice fish, to me it looks like captain cook bridge.

Good luck with the find,
But since when did Shakespeare make expensive reels?
And it took a while to reaslise you lost it, anyhow you'd be surprised someone may hand it in.
-
i've had mixed results with egi in both natural and glow... other scents have worked better like stimulate and yum spray - both cheaper too........
but then again ive caught more squid when not using any scents against someone who is??? go figure - i'm still not entirely convinced, all i know is that it doesnt seem to scare them off so why not?

Sorry bout the late reply, but if possible scrap the prawns, dont use them, try and pump nippers from Maianbar, that is when you go out next.
-
just wanted to give a big thanks to you raiders that helped me with this topic. You guys put me onto the livies and we got 12 yakkas and even a squid in less than an hour.Couldnt turn these into good fish, although we got a sambo and four hits without hookups but still it was a good days fishing.Used some of the fresh bait and got a nice bag of flatties. Good on ya guys Scott
Where'd you pick them up?
-
If conditions suit, and you have a suitable boat i would suggest Shark Island.
-
Thanks for the tip A.dawg. I mainly target bream in the hacking but am looking at starting to target whiting when the bream are quiet... So you reckon prawns over nippers or tube worms?
I usually like to hit the water early morning so hopefully i willl beat the storm and wind
Imo you can't go past nippers, they are live and they are what is natural to the whiting.

I have only ever seen one in the river, and that is with 50 combined years of experience.
-
what was the tail like? i think i have something
[EDIT 1]
Could be a black drummer?
Luderick? (doubt it)
Coral trout looks like it would fit the descriptions but it has a larger mouth..
Could have been a baby emperor
just needa know the tail shape
Since when did they venture this far south?
-
I used to have fireline, but I stay away from it now - it used to snap when it gets old and your tying knots.
I find that braid is much better, ask the guys who work in the tackle shops.
Cheers,
Leatherjacket
Yea my preference is Tuffline if over 10lb.
Fireline is braid
No its not, its fused line from memory.

Nice squid RPL. The one on the left looks huge!
What "general area" did you get the squid, if you don't want to give away the exact spot?
Did you get the rats around Jibbon? We scored a few along the cliffs from Jibbon to Marley a couple of weeks ago. They're great fun, although I'd like a keeper for a change.
Cheers
Peter
It is massve TBH its the biggest I have seen.
We got them around Bate bay, as in round the Jibbon heads and round towards the Bombora.
We get the the rats around there, they are fun, had 4 goes at them, Put down a live yellowtail, dead yellowtail, pilchard and a Squid, of course the squid was taken by the King as it hit the water.
RPL,
The guy from DPI who is at yowie bay wharf every saturday surveying peoples catches told me last week that they were catching big squid around Jibbons beach. You should give that place a go.
Peter,
How many kingies did you land? Im hoping the kingies start making a decent show in the river itself soon....
Ahhhh yea, I think thats because they are breeding atm, but yes he is right about that, get out there and give it a red hot go!
Hey RPL,
great squid
I have not seen one that big before
good job mate
from fishfinder 707
Cheers
Yum, nice green eyes! What size squid jig did you use and what rig?
I've been playing with a patinoska rig and a squid spike in addition to casting jigs from the boat. no luck yet but I'll refine my technique/ combination.
Leatherjacket
Hi mate, um I was flicking around a 2.5 jig and got told to put it away so I did, i put a spike out with a yellow tail through it and that took them all.
If you want good squid maybe try around the kelp beds in your local area.
Cheers.
