  1. I spent an allnighter last night hunting the elusive Port Hacking Jew.

Unfortunately all that would take my Yakkas was a small shark and nothing wanted the pike i spent all night slowly drowning.

I am yet to land a Jew of reasonable size in the Hacking but it is a great spot to spend the night.

    Dave

Unlucky mate, its not easy to land one, but i think the best chance to take one is on squid, i have tried several times with yakkas for zilch, where squid has worked but they have been dropped.

BTW what shark did you catch?

  2. Chest waders are a very good investment, i have the Snowbee ones that are around $105 that are a light brown made of light material they are ideal as they breath and more comfortable than the other PVC waders you'll get for $50 less, they also provide good protection from those nasty rays that we get down here. They do have compartments for tackle at the front but there is very limited room, my advice is to get the ones you can afford, after all they are a good investment.

    Hope that helps

  3. Last night went out fishing for bait, that being squid at for a Jew session early this morning. In the beginning it was very slow no hits no nothing, but at about 7:30 we picked up 10 nice arrows in about 10 mins.

Started this morning from Dolans bay boat ramp at 540 for spot X to target the jews, i had two combos, one being a SicStick Pro with a 4000 Symetre and 20lb braid and the other was a T-curve with a 1000 stradic spooled with 4lb braid. Dropped two squid down for very little in after about 1 hour my T-curve gets a good jew run, takes about 30 m of line and snap there goes the leader... Very disappointing considering that he didn't take my other line and that was the only action.

Dropped several other baits, but they were getting munched by the leatheries so we decided to target them. Ended up with 20, the biggest being 2 fanbellies going 35 and 36cm. All in all a good day on the Port just a bit disappointing not being able to get into the jew.

  5. Hey all,

Hired a tinnie with my mate from work today and went around the hacking in search of a feed. Alas there were very few fish around for us except for a couple of small pinkies and a ray. Tried around Lilli Pilli and all the other places for nothing.

Has anyone else had teh same sort of luck in the hacking recently?

Unlucky, it hasn't been that bad recently, i have caught a few fish recently. Last outing on the boat saw us land a jew whiting and a bream, so there are fish for the taking.

  6. Hi guys

Up just after 6am, bright & early yesterday morning (for me anyway!!!) Met up with 3 yakking buddies just over the bridge at Tuncurry & formed a Kayak convoy to go down Taree St & hit the water!!!

    Forster Foursome (almost)

    post-2231-1200353919_thumb.jpg

Paddled across towards the yabby beds, but at low tide, it was Very Low & apart from getting no hits, kept hitting the bottom with our pedals & paddles, so headed up towards the Wallamba Creek. Stephen had even resorted to getting out of the yak & wading/casting as he'd forgotten his anchor! Dave & I forgot our nets & Rod forgot his keeper bag, so between us, the early start must have mucked up our 'system!'

Got a big 'Come Here' from Rod ..... Dave was onto some fish in the Wallamba Creek! Steve & I hightail it up to the creek to join in the fun.

The Day before, my little Purple monster was working on the bream, but not today. Dave had suggested using a green Surecatch popper, so I put it on & cast towards the shore - instant hit! I'm On!!! I called it for a Tailor as it didn't feel like a bream & pulled out a very nice whiting of 35cm!

    35cm whiting

    post-2231-1200354103_thumb.jpg

In the meantime, we heard a lot of commotion behind us, as Rod hooked up to a terrific flattie!! He was only on 6lb line & got it on a Surecatch popper!! He was stoked!!! It measured 55cm & gave a terrific fight. He went into my catch bag, along with my whiting. Stephen & Dave were still throwing everything they had ...... with lots of hits but not many hookups.

I tossed my green popper out & got a nice 28cm bream which also found it's way into my bag! Our guests were hopeful of fish for dinner, so it was looking good!!!

We went further up the creek & tried lots more lures - Stephen started landing smaller bream & was having fun. Finally, Dave took his own advice & put the green popper on ...... tightening up almost immediately to a very nice bream, which immediately busted him off (he'd forgotten his net too!!!) Buggar!!!

The wind was a bit of a pain & we were heading into it when returning to our starting point .... for some reason, I was having difficulty keeping up with the others, then realised I still had my catch bag hanging over the side, creating lots of drag!! Popped it on top of the yak & kept pedalling!!!

Stephen was most impressed with the ease of handling the hobies whilst fishing all the time with no need for the anchor. Hmmmmm ....... ?Maybe Next year's Xmas Pressie, then the wife can have his??

We had a terrific time & I really appreciated meeting up with the guys - and now we know a good little spot away from mainstream boating traffic! I had fished the corner of the creek/lake from the shore with no hits, so this was great! ALso, there is an empty block half way up the creek, so we could almost launch there instead of in the lake!

Look forward to hitting the water with the guys again - have more visitors now till the end of the week, so hope to connect with Stephen to give those blackies a scare!!

    Cheerio for now

    Roberta

We defrosted some of the blackies that Cam & I caught last week & cooked those up, with the fresh fish caught today & a couple of Abalone that my neighbour gave us & we had a terrific fish meal! Enjoyed by all.

Great stuff, well done on that Whiting i have always been keen to fish for them with poppers.

  7. RPL ive seen your pics and thats a great lizard too mate good job, good to see you kept your head and held your rod in your mouth, my mind was racing man my reel didnt even enter my mind but yeah i know it aint good for it, whats that lure hanging out of your flatties gob?

3' Burkley bassminnow in Pearl, believe in me, once you get a PB flattie on SP's you'll be hooked till your next quiet spell...

Yea , i held it like that cause she was pretty buggered after the fight she gave me!

Your right, you dont know what to think, at that stage i would of ended the day, but i continued to get 9 smaller models.. haha

  8. Bloody nice flatty mate.

At $39.90 a kilo for filletted, skinned flathead it's hard to send them back. (or maybe thats just me)

    Dave

Very nice man, i know how they go on light line got one acouple of weeks around that size! And isn't it great to see them go back like that, after the fight on light line they are buggered as it can last for up to 20 mins!

BTW just a bit of advice, i wouldn't leave your reel in the sand like that, it wont last long at all!

Thats just you i think! :1prop:

  9. That's a pretty good little session on the hacking mate, nice feed of fish too.

    Well done!

    cheer's mate

    steve

Thanks mate, yea went out the day before for about 3 hours for zilch, chasing the Jew, we had good livies to Tailor and Yakkas the only thing i managed was a big numb-ray on 3' gulp.

Other blokes came back at the same time as us and managed 20 odd whiting up to 42 cm so the river isn't fishing to bad.

  10. Got my new Stradic 2500 from Nexus (thanks Steve) and thought...better give it a run

    in the lake.

Went for a quick wade out near the caravan park using SPs and encountered bazillions of bloody toads that

wreaked havoc on my lures...Geez I hate those buggers.

Every cast, the SP was demolished in seconds by the blighters :1badmood:

Found one stretch of deeper water where they weren't as bad and a little bream of 27cm nailed a 4" minnow in pumpkinseed...didn't he go!! Unhooked him and let him swim off. No pic as I was up to my gonads in water and my camera aint waterproof like me. :074:

No flatties today but plenty of nice sized whiting in the shallows again.

Tried emulating a popper with and SP bloodworm and got a couple of hits, but failed to hookup.

Must get some little poppers to try as they were definitely interested in the movement.

Love the new reel  They are like a Swiss watch those things.

Had to be home, so gave it away after about an hour.

Water was very clear today on the outgoing tide. May have better luck next visit.

    Cheers,

    Pete.

Good stuff, the stradics are great especially the white ones, shame i would of bought it if i didn't get my 1000!

  11. Dont remember how many in the bucket but its well worth the money even if its for the juice alone.

One thing to remember is when you open the gulp alive gar do not remove the seal otherwise your gar will drip everywhere, just open it slightly and take them out that way.

I guess you can return unused ones back in the bucket and you can put other gulp into the bucket?

  12. G'day mate,

For mine i would go 6lb Rapala titanium braid, thats what i use or 4lb fireline with a 6lb Nitlon flurocarbon trace. That line can handle more than you would imagine, i have landed 65cm kings, salmon and big flatties on it, the key is when fishing light is to take your time and be patient.

BTW the fireline breaks above its rating.

Nitlon is about $17.50 for 100m as compared to vanish that is $19 for 200m or something, and i haven't found that there is that much difference between the two.

It can be expensive when fishing with this line so the key is to leave a gap on the spool so you dont get wind knots, its painful and time consuming trust me! :angry2:

I fish the flats so my fish dont graze the flurocarbon as much as they would if i were in the boat so if fishing for bigger flatties i would go about 10-12lb flurocarbon, of course they can still break it but your a better chance with that over the the 6lb.

    Hope that helps.

  13. Worth the extra money?

Yes or no as compared to the ones out of the pack, and how much do they retail for? something like $20?

And how many plastics would you get in the bucket.

    Thanks
