  1. Just a quick note to fishos of the Port hacking. Just come back from a fish and landed some good elbow slapping taylor outside the entance of Yowie Bay. We were trolling with wonder wobblers. Southerly hit just as the fish came on (another hint from jewgaffer and his barometer). We got our fill and called it early.

    keep paddling

    Awesome, great fun aren't they.

Were the breaking the surface or just down below.

I was out acouple of km's past jibion and saw the S'thly come up from Wollongong, we ended up with a few snapper, nanigye (SP) and Sweep.

  2. I'd had the topic running around in my head for a while then read your story the other week and thought damn you outdid me by one cm and I had an open water advantage over you. It inspired me to put the question out there to see what other people had managed.

Planning on going to port Douglas at the end of the year and intend on taking the bream finesse up there to see what I can do. Expecting to get spooled so am also bringing up a 10lb/15lb and a 50lb outfit. Hoping to get some good stories and even better photos out of that trip.

1cm is nothing never the less they are both great fish that take great skill, or great luck, i mean how hard is it to land a king of that size around structure?

You brave taking that combo up, i have used mine around Airlie and struggled to get some smaller fish round there...

  3. Looks like he decided to bleed it... i've heard the little ones are called 'soapies' for that reason... i'll be interested to hear how it goes on the plate.

Yea looks to be bled just wondering how come it looks like that, when i bleed fish there is normally one small cut but?

  4. I've caught undersize Kings near Lilli Pilli and have seen a legal taken off the front of Gymea Bay. The Hacking has a lot of bloody deep water in it and obviously holds good fish.

When you have a look at the distance away from the heads Lilli Pilli is probably closer to the ocean than the airport is in the Bay. No surprise Kings, Snapper, bonito etc get nabbed up there at times.

Thats right, i mean there are plenty of deep holes.

When you think of Sydney you think of like all other waterways not PH, that is the only waterway i fish and the only one i know so i cant really comment but there are great fish to had.

Thanks everyone for their kind words, i have finally got my mojo back!

    Two PBs in one week.

  5. Not sure how clear this will be without pics but here goes....

You need to skin the fillets first then debone them by removing any rib bones and the pin bones (the ones that run along the middle line of the fillet). The best way to remove the pin bones is to split each fillet lengthways cutting out the bones as you go.

There will probably be a 'blood line' along the thick edge of each half fillet... cut this out although you don't have to be meticulous... it just spoils the presentation and can have a strong flavour.

You should be left with 2 long thin slabs of clean white flesh from each original fillet. These can be sliced into slices about 3mm thick across the slab (across the grain of the flesh) leaving you with beautiful bite sized morsels.

I did some sashimi kingfish on the water last summer with some pics

    hope they help.

    Cheers, Slinky

Great post, ill look into doing that this evening.thanks alot.

  6. Went out today fishing LB fishing some flats around the Hacking as the tide fell, landed my new PB on bait and lure that was a 71cm king.

Impressive effort from me considering there was structure around, anyway the king fell to a 5inch jerk shad in camo on the 1000 Stradic loaded with 4lb and a 6lb fluro trace.

  7. I LOVE MY STRADIC 2500 ITS GREAT FOR PLASTISCS, I BOUGHT THAT GUYS SUSTAIN IN BUY N SELL SORRY.

Ah ok Im leaning toward the Tierra but will consider all advice, i think there are less reviews on the tierra mainly because they havent been around for as long. Anyway its good Red let me know he sold the reel after i had sent all those PM's

  8. Just a quick report.

Went out this afternoon around 3pm wind was still but there was a strong wind warning and it was a real gamble to go out.

Decided to go towards the heads, toss some plastics around, second cast got me a new PB trevally on SP's that went 56cm, after he destroyed that plastic that was it and i decided to head in.

Decided to fish some flats around Maianbar and got into a nice flattie aprox 50cm and a useless pike. This was good enough for me and i called it a day.

    Pics to follow...

  9. Great effort , did that one fight much?

or did it just sit on the bottom, the reason i ask is cause the bigger ones i have caught just sit there after a run.

Good job on the release, any fish that big and that old should be released.

  10. But when it comes down to your purchase rest assured that whatever you will get will be quality.

FTR i have a Shimano Stradic 1000, landed salmon to 65cm on it and flathead to 80cm on it so it can handle big fish, I have had it for a year and there is only one issue, the handle has some play nothing performance wise just a niggling problem that is more annoying than anything else.

  11. Thanks guys. Not st george basin.

Cant give away secret locations but 1 of em came from close to hodgeys avatar. Shhh hodgeywink.gif

Very Nice fish. Certainly would reccomend cradling the big girls. When they start to get some weight behind them, its alot of stress on their bodies out of water to hold them out in front of you with one hand. JMHO

    102cm suss.gif

Hopefully someone has a metery on a mat or tape and can post it for us.

In any case post up your biggest frogs. Cant ever see too many of them.

    Cheers Scott

Yep thats what i was getting at but anyway,

    here is my best post-256-1199477656.jpg

    Nothing on yours but!

  12. why kill a flathead that big; awesome catch dont get me wrong, but when they're that big they're not even supposed to taste like anything special and in my opinion would be way better off being allowed back in to breed and keep the numbers up

    just seems a waste

good catch though, is an amazing fish

Doesn't say that the fish was killed, but surely holding it like that wouldn't do it any good.

  13. G'day,

Im after a new Combo for the summer mainly used for targeting, Jews, flatties and smaller Pelagics on plastics.

Currently i own reels in the following sizes, 1000, 1500 and 4000. Now what should the next one be?

I have looked at the 2500 sizes and that seems about right for the job. Id most likely spool it up with 12lb Braid i think...

Now the two reels i have been looking at the Shimano stradic and the Diawa Tierra. Alot of people say that Diawa are the go in the smaller sizes and Shimano are the go in the bigger sizes. Now which one should i get considering they are in the same price range.

And i don't want this to turn into another one of the 'Shimano V Daiwa' Threads.

What im looking for is, the quality of the reel, drag, weight, the way the reel lays line on the spool and how resistant they are to corrosion.

    Thanks alot.
