  1. Went out yesterday arvo after work with Steve and Glen. Glen had never caught a kingy before so he was keen to get out with me n steevie on one of our weekday arvo trips as they seem to be firing for us of late. Yesterday didnt dissapoint .. we arrive at the mark and both Steve and myslef instantly declared that things looked very "fishy", all three launch our plastics and within 20secs Glen shouts "IM ON" 2 mins later and many exclamations of "GEEZUZ" and the Glen lands his first ever kingy was about 65-67cm (me current ruler/sticker only goes to 45) which was hooked on a large 9" red sluggo like stick bait. Stayed for about another hour, glen lost another rat at the side of the boat and i hooked onto something major on my light rod ... but alas the 10lb braid gave way on the 4th or 5th run but im thoroughly determined now to land one on the light rod I had one other hit and for no take and so did steevie and that was it for our 1hr session
  2. Decided to hit the harbour for a lazy sunday afternoon. Launched at Drummoyne boat ramp about 11:30 without having to wait too long and even got a car park .. good start. Get out of the bay and head past the Gladesy .. and its chop city .. havent seen that many boats on the harbour in aaages .... so with with me tinny getting bounced around a bit i decided we'd stay inside and fish west of the harbour bridge. Tried flicking a few SP's (5" nucklear chicken gulp & 9" red/white sluggo) at various places (Goat island, balmain ferry wharfs, greenwich wharf, lane cove flats) for zilch, not even a tap. Anchored and berleyed up near greenwich wharf for half hour for no results (bait = prawns, whitebait, occy) Anchored and berleyed up around the corner from balmain wharfs and pulled in 1 trevally, lost another larger one at the boat when i tried flipping him without the net and pulled in about 3 or 4 pinkies which were released. Did another round of SP's for zilch again so called it a day at 4pm PS .. good ol uncle trev (common silver trev) dont go too bad as sashimi
  3. You the man jewgaffer .. love your posts mate .. keep em coming
  4. After struggling through another typical monday at work skunga and i decided to head on out after work again and continue "The afternoon kingy stakes" (as its now called). Heading out to our fav posy we noticed some ominous dark clouds looming out to the south but with the rest of the sky looking not to bad we continued on. 100M from the marker stevie yells out .. "Look at that" that being a massive flock of birds working the surface right near the marker .. we look at each other and just know we are in for some fun. By now we are seeing surface breachs from kingies left right and centre ... it was heaven First flick for me and i send out a small flickbait on a worm hook rig, on the light rod .. second cast and im reeling in slack line .. didnt feel a thing, im guessing a tailor took a liking to my gold swivel, ah well, big rod is pre rigged with a 9" starlo and bushy flickbait (also on a worm hook rig) i throw it out, let her sink to the bottom, give it the now customary to reefs .. and im on .. yeehah .. 2 mins later in comes a nice lil 55cm king .. my first for the season (however i still trail stevie 2-1) back she goes and i send the rig out again .. but just as before with the light rod .. after a couple of casts im reeling in slack line (im hoping it was tailor chewing the swivels, otherwise i need to revise my hook tying or invest in new line). Anyway a quick re-rig with a big jighead and another 9" flickbait threaded on and i drop it back down to the bottom .. two reefs and yep u gueesed it .. im on again ... this one seemed a bit smaller as i was pulling it in ... till it really went ... then PING says the 50lb braid and down goes me head ... as i realise ive got no more of those plastics left Anyway .. tried a few other SPs with no luck for me .. although i did see a sambo or tailor hit one of mine right next to the boat, but no hook up. Steevie on the other hand did hook up, to a monster sambo which went about 50cm id say and put up an awesome fight on his light rod. Schools continued to bust up around as the light was fading but we'd both had enough so it was time to head home Just noticed steevie beat me to the post again .. ah well .. just gives you all more to read at work hehe
  5. haha .. beat ya on that one steevie gotta beat ya on something tho, coz im gettin my a$% caned in the kingy stakes so far
  6. Mainly jigheads these days. Have caught them before in the harbour on a worm hook style rig, rigged on a leader with a running sinker above a swivel, but the jigheads seem to work just as well ... and they also take half the time to rig up
  7. I hope to be out on the harbour sunday morning as well .. hopefully getting into the squidleys then kings. I'd wish u fellas luck against the french Dan .. but i severely doubt your boys will need it!
  8. i actually got done a berkley gulp, in the 5 inch mullet coloured jerk shad Both times we've had hooks ups within the first few minutes of rocking up to the marker, with the motor still running, if ya not on within 10 mins id advise you move to the next marker.
  9. i'll be hitting sydney harbour .. trying to get that first king for the season!
  10. Im the same I cut the bait jigs in half .. and hey presto youve got yourself 2 x 3 hook bait jigs (which i always put bait on btw). 2 jigs for the price of one and half as many tangles
  11. i had a double hook up on a small mako when fishing with skunga off lion island one time, i was fishing a whole fillet of talior and skunga had the rest of the tailor on his line, both were under floats and separated by at least 10M of water The little mako (bout 3ft long) swallowed both hooks and baits .. which was lucky for me coz he eventually chewed through skungas leader (100lb) and i ended up with the catch
  12. Gday raiders, Couple of quick squidding questions .. more answers the merrier .. cause im still not even close to catching the little suckers consistently. 1 - How many casts into an area before changing jigs? 2 - How many times do you change jig before moving to next area? 3 - Favourite jig size and colour for shallow water 4 - Favourite jig size and colour for deeper water Heres my results (remember to ignore these as im still not any good .. lol) 1 - About a dozen 2 - 2 3 - Small/Medium in a Pink or orange 4 - Medium/Large in a blue or green Looking forward to the answers from a couple of the more noted squidders out there
  13. Absolutley classic .. cant think of anything that even comes close to that sucker .. lol
  14. I new what kind of day it was going to be when, after launching the boat (drummoyne @ 5am), i realise ive left me sunnies at home ... Great! Anyway, I soldier on as we had 4 boats in total out on the water and head for the first stop, the red marker at goat island. Had a few flicks with a 9" flick bait for no good so i decide i'll drop a bait down. Rigged up the frozen slimy on a paternoster witha sliding two hook rig and dropped it down. Few more casts of SP and no good so i start up the motor to give the slimey a lil putt around the marker .. almost instantly i see a hit, didnt hook up, but he did about 10 secs later. I grab the rod (new 10kg outfit with 50lb braid) and this thing just goes, never felt a pull like this in the harbour b4 .. finally im onto my first big king (or so i thought). Well as im sitting right next the marker i decide im gonna need some room to play with this boy, stick the motor in reverse and start putting away, at this stage the fish has calmed down and not taking anymore line .. so i get meself about 10M clear of the marker and decide lets go, i give it the first lift to start the fight and bang off he goes again ... and out come the hooks ... arrrghh And wouldn't ya know i was out there till midday and came home empty handed. Tried a bit mroe at goat island for nothing else, next tried taronga for some squid, where skunga picked up a nice small one, but that was it. Headed up into middle harbour and tried anchoring and berleying for nothing, moved to watsons and tried the same to get swamped by tiny snapper, so we moved to 3 posts near rose bay, again nothing. About this time Skunga finds that he has a spair pair of sunnies in his boat .. halleljuliah i think .. that is until he throws them in the drink trying to throw them boat to boat ..... need i say more! I then tried flicking some 5" nuclear chicken gulps at the reef markers just behind the island in rose bay, and it got smashed up by long toms .. (so at least i could replace the frozen slimeys) put two long toms in the bait well and went back to goat island ... for nothing ... then it was home
  15. once made a lure with a 3 hook gang and clamped a vb bottle top over each hook shaft. Didnt catch anything though ..... even with the tailor on the chew
  16. Howdy fishraiders, Im planning on camping and fishing at patonga for the days listed above .. but as usually happens when i plan a trip away the forecast is an absolute shocker 10/25 knot SE's. In any case, im a bit of a tragic so i will most likelly still head up, rain hail or shine. Therefore i was hoping if anyone point me in the right direction for a protected bay or two in the hawkesbury with the predicted winds? Or should i really just stay at home?
  17. I think i'll head out into Sydney Harbour in me tinny on saturday morning. Probably head on over to north head and spend the first hour or so chasing the squidleys and depending on the results i shall see how things go from there!
  18. Cheers Guys, Well didnt get out friday, but did head out saturday arvo and sunday morning. Saturday arvo was just a quiet run to make sure the old girl was running smoothly, which was lucky i did coz i soon discovered my battery had gone dead so i had no fishfinder. Dont think it mattered though with all the rain the harbouraround lane cove looked like a chocolate soup and nothing bar a 15cm tailor was pulled in. Saturday saw a much better day wether wise, no wind, sunny, smooth waters. Started berlying in near clifton gardens for some live bait and threw a squid jig out .. nothing at all. Then tried a troll along sth head for nothing either. Was going to try nth head like advised, but i had a greenie onboard with me who didnt like the sight of open water too much so we headed back to rose bay and anchored up near the tri-post marker ... there we caught two legal bream (28 & 30cm) and funnily enough also caught a tiny little yakka (which me mate dropped over side, rigged with hook and sinker .. poor lil yakka) and also a slimey mackeral. So all in all .. not that many fish, but hey it was great day to be in the harbour anyways PS .. will definately head to Nth head next trip
  19. Anyone heading out into the harbour for a fish tomorrow? Tis me birthday so im taking the obligatory day off work and thought i might go chase some winter squid then hopefully some kings Ayone got any suggestions for tomorrow? i havent been out in the harbour for at least 2-3 months so i've no idea whats been going on out there. Im hoping i should at least be able to get onto some sambos and tailor aroun sth head?
  20. Likewise ... im thinkin a squid session to start with .. and if successful go after the kings. If not ... crack out the SP's
  21. Its good to see this govt continues to treat water recycling with absolute disdain!
  22. Gday Hobbit, which area was closed off? Was it the wharf? I've got a camping trip organised for Patonga in September (APEC Weekend), and in the past we've always been able to fish wherever we want!
  23. actually falthead and leather jackets are failry low in toxins, caught at the gladesville bridge they have lower levels of dioxins than mullet and tailor (if yur worried about dioxins dont eat these two from anywhere in the harbour) caught at balmoral. And if you like leatheries (like most people) try gladesville wharf in the mornings ... plenty of em there
