  1. Exactly my point gentlemen

Have to agree with you guys....seems like a bit of a first world problem to me complaining about wearing something that could save your life with the downside being maybe an inch or two of padding around your torso...don't really see the big deal.

But hay not knocking you boys that are upset about it. I cant imagine the morningtidefishing guys being able to do what they do with a life jacket on!

  2. Just be aware or the angle you are holding your rod on when you go to land a fish here guys I've literally seen people take the labels off new (good quality) rods and put a bad angle on the tip when trying to pick up their fish and snap....there goes their new rod and the tackle shops are pretty wise to it so don't expect a refund if you do it. Should be some watsons leaping bonito coming through their soon too...bit of a weaker fight but gorgeous colours

  3. J braid is horrible for casting have put it on my sustain 5000 and have had nothing but trouble off the rocks, back to the ever reliable fins

Hasn't been my experience, casts incredibly well for me...sure it's not your set up?

I'm using fg knots and a good rod length and a half of leader and on a 7ft 5-10kg rod it casts 20grams about 100m which is not bad for this outfit at all.

  4. I've got the daiwa j-braid in 30, 20 and 50 in the colour your talking about. Its worked great and is quite cheap in comparison to the other jigging braids I've seen. I am trying a new brand in a week or two when I need to change so I will let you know what it's like in comparison

  5. Personally I don't eat fish other than in one big mouth full with my nose blocked but... when I used to be a chef we put on a special one week (not bass but bloody similar) of estuary perch cooked whole. We sold out every day for the week and I was told by many that it was the best tasting fish they've ever had. I imagine bass would be pretty much the same.

When the farms are sending a barra out to be cooked they will take it out of fresh water and into the salt for a few weeks to flush the fresh out of their blood (gets rid of the muddy taste). I'm guessing that e.p's would go better than a bass due to the ability to take more salty conditions. But I'd be interested to know! =)

  6. Hey adsy. Wont be long (mod march) till i will be moving north end of gold coast haha keen to explore anything up there mate

That's perfect mate, I can start working out the jews, threadies and cod in the Brisbane River and when you get here you can take me out on the Goldy for some Mangrove Jacks! Beautiful place up here man you'll love it!
  7. Good report as usual Jim, just out of curiosity what weight jig head do you use for your stick bait? I can never seen to get to the bottom with my jig had selections... They always seem to light and never reach bottom

Could be wrong here but I figured he was talking about hardbody stickbaits. Depending on the current speed (more current, more weight) I wouldn't use less than a 1ounce offshore especially if trying to reach the bottom.
  8. From what I've been told try to pick colours around the green and red or purples. Was camping there during a comp a few years back and literally every pro team had either purple or green and red lures exclusively. I imagine the ecogear blades would do great here, the shrimp shaped ones with the stinger assist hooks I mean. Definitely gets you in the strike zone nice and fast and what doesn't eat shrimp right!?

  9. G'day Raiders,

So I've recently moved up to west Brisbane (Riverhills to be exact) and although I've only been here for a week I have to say I'm about ready to burst with anticipation for a thready or jew! Between getting set up and applying for work here there and everywhere I've managed to put some time aside to prepare for a good fish.

Went out and got two jackalbros transam 95's, one in a black with red highlights for dark conditions and one lighter mullet colour for clearer conditions and bought some single lure hooks to change out the trebles as to not bend hooks out (apparently 50-60% of threadies are lost this way on their first big run in the river)

Went around to a few tackle shops with one in particular being a stand out for information, if your are ever around Jindalee make sure you pop into the Kayak fishing store their. The owner was a legend and actually makes excellent coffee (i was a barista for 10 years) right in the shop.

After picking his brain and doing some more research myself I decided to give it a crack this weekend with the full moon on sunday. I plan to head to Kookaburra park to launch the yak and tempt a few predators around the high tide. I have a sounder with downscan which I will be relying on to find the deeper holes but if anyone in Brisbane wants to tea up a session I am more than happy to make it a team effort and happy to consider other areas to fish.

hit me up if you're keen to give it a try with a noob to the area otherwise hopefully it goes well and I can writr a nice juicy report for you all. It's about time we had some posts from up north!

    Tight lines!!

  10. Well 8 years of research says that it doesn't affect the native flora and fauna. Secondly I don't see how a virus that spreads from direct physical contact will spread from a carp to a bird and then somehow to a native. The thing with making assumptions is there are literally no facts to it you're just making a guess at something and saying the people that researched for 8 years don't know what they are talking about. We can't say from just observing a visual decline in mullet and herring that the natives have turned to eating the carp. If you showed me a bass cut open with a carp in its gut that's another thing.

  11. Where I live on the hawkesbury a few of us believe that carp are a main part of the diet for our bass. We don't see the mullet or herring we use to see which were part of their diet. That's just the condition the river and creeks that flow into it are at where that's what they feed on.

Plus what big Murray cod wouldn't snack on a carp...

True that! I've seen them eat healthy adult ducks before so surely they wouldn't turn their nose at a carp.

As far as I know they are talking about doing this in the Murray Darling only so I don't think it would affect you guys too much but I guess we will see.

  12. My only concern what happens to the native fish where carp are a main part of the diet... They should be stocking more bass, cod and perch because then no carp under 30cm will be able to leave cause they'll be dinner... I don't know thats just another way to look at it.

Other then that I don't have an issue.

Is there any evidence to suggest that natives eat carp? As far as I knew part of the reason they are such a problem is nothing eats them. Interesting topic though
  13. I would call the 10lb more extra light (but still possible). My light set up is the penn prevail 8-12kg matched with a daiwa surf basia 25qd (basically a 5000 size reel in daiwa's sizings) this has 300m of 30lb j-braid which if fishing the rocks I use a minimum of 50lb fluro leader up to about 80lb. My heavy set-up is much the same as the fellas saying 10lb is too light but I am yet to catch a fish on it. Im really enjoying the feel of the 8-12kg rod and it casts between 20-70gram lures beautifully.

  14. I'd agree with you there flatheadluke... Im under 170cm and weigh about 60kg on a good day so the light gear really makes a difference to my enjoyment and after all that's why we fish right!? Perhaps with some fitness and weight training I'll be better equipped to handle the hoodlums with the heavy rods and lines.

  15. Jump onto youtube and look up morningtidefishing, they are byron bay boys and absolute freaks at what they do. It's all land based game fishing and they have quite a few instructional vids about gear...the reason I'm suggesting these guys is they are sponsorship free so they have zero bias towards brands and will give you some pretty solid money saving advice about gear...definitely saved me some cash over the last year =)

And you're right this got heated real fast haha you can't say fishos aren't passionate though hay!
