  1. Thanks mate, happy to take your advice I live between the two rivers anyway. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  2. Hey guys, Rookie question... I want to head out on my boat on Sunday morning with my brother but have only taken it in rivers so far. We want to go just outside Botany Bay and fish along Kurnell/Bate Bay. I've got a map, v sheet, water etc but it's a 5.5m fibreglass bow rider/ski boat and don't want to get caught in much swell (concerned about waves over the front) I'm also not a pro at reading the weather... This is the forecast: 10knot winds. Plan to go out around 530-6 and back before lunch. Is this reasonable? Any advice welcome. Thanks for your help! And sorry about the dumb questions! 3. What a top start to the long weekend! That looks seriously tasty! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  4. Fingers crossed that it's a one off. I was good the night before no booze, and nothing too heavy to eat. Will look into the ginger tablets as a start and upgrade to heavier stuff as I need it. Thanks mate! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  5. Thanks mate the snapper was awesome, but the rock cod soup was even better! Poor mans lobster indeed! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  6. Hey Raiders, Went out for a quick fish today with a mate chasing Kings out of the harbour - and what a day it was! On the water at 6, cruised around for some slimeys and picked up 8 good sized ones. Struggled to find the squid so made do. Great school of mackerel between the heads but they were really quick moving and not interested in our lures. Cruised out a bit further and the wind and waves picked up - enough for me to start feeling pretty crook, but not enough to head back in. Dropped a livey down deep and got into a 46cm flattie! First fish I've caught on a livey so pretty chuffed even if it wasn't what I was after. After that nothing for a while so cruised up the coast a bit further. The sounder was showing a few good fish on a reef in 8-10m. My mate put a livey down deep and before he even hit the bottom - wham! Closed the bail arm and the drag went off. 10 mins later and he had 78cm kingfish! Happy days! I dropped the next one down to the same spot - on the bottom for about 30seconds when the livey went nuts. Wham - I lifted the rod, it's buckling over, drag going, huzzah! Then slack. I've either pulled the hook or he spat the bait but that fish lives to fight another day. Spent another 20 mins in the spot but lost the last 2 liveys - cut in half (but well below the hook). No idea what would have caused that. On the bait rod pulled in a legal snapper and red rock cod. Happy days. Snapper was out of water for 6 hours before it landed on my plate - brilliant! The wind picked up and it was getting pretty rough (and I was now pretty green) so time to head in. On the way though there was a pod of humpbacks jumping and rolling less than 100m from the boat. That was a pretty amazing experience and the first time I've seen them near the harbour. Too choppy to get good pics but tried my best. A great day off work and a great feed to go with it. Will have to try harder with the Kings next time! Any tips from boaties about preventing seasickness? I go out regularly and this is the first time I've been bad like this. Hope it's not the start of something! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  7. Makes you wonder what you haven't seen in the past! Like many of us I grew up by the beach and spent most of my summers there - never saw a shark in the surf. That said I was at Bondi that December day (2008-9?) when a tourist was bitten by a shark in chest deep water. I have also seen plenty of big-enough-to-scare-you sharks when spearing around Malabar and South Coogee - but that's what my float was for... And none of them were ever interested in me or my float anyway. Slightly concerned about the comments of sharks further up the Hacking (like Gymea) as I like to take the kids to Gray's point for a swim! I think we've probably all been swimming with sharks our whole lives but just haven't realised. Patrolled beaches are the way to go this summer! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  10. Hey Raiders, Took my 4 year old and a couple of her 5 year old friends (and dads) out on the Hacking today for a bit of a fish and some fun in the sun. My daughter has been watching IFISH a for the last couple of weeks while we get dinner ready and wanted to catch "a whopper". Cute. We put in at 8am and potted around to Yowie bay for a look. We chucked half a dozen rods in with a mix of pillies, squid and prawns on the hooks and waited... My 4 year old starts getting excited, I look around and she's actually onto a fish! She's really struggling just holding the line. It's a $10 Kmart job and she's only little rigged with a #8 longshank hook so how big could it be? She got scared and handed me the rod, and this thing has some weight to it! I loosened the drag and let it have a few runs before bringing it close enough to the boat to net it. 52cm Salmon!! My first salmon! (I cast it and a landed it so it's only fair I claim it right?! [emoji6]) and her first fish! Asked the girl what we should do with it and she said put it back and catch it again - back it went. By this stage we were at the top of the tide and nothing was biting; cool but annoying to see a rat king on the surface swimming around the boat. So close we could see his yellow stripe - tried to net him but dodged us. Would he touch any of our baits or lures? No. Was he happy to eat our berley cubes? Or course he was! Clever fish. Spent the rest of the morning drifting South Arm and Deeban with plastics but only managed a puffer fish. The creepy thing kept croaking while I was getting the hook out. Anyway bit of fun for the kids who enjoyed some sun and some fresh air and we're stoked to actually see a big fish! On a side note one of the dads caught a silver fish with 3 thick vertical black stripes, about the size of a bream, which he promptly dropped over the side of the boat before we could get a picture. It didn't look like any bream I've ever seen and definitely not a luderick either. Anyone have a good guess off this vague description? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  13. Hey Raiders, Went for a quick fish this arvo in the hacking and learnt a valuable lesson or two. There was a HUGE bait ball and I could see a few salmon going crazy on them with bust ups every few minutes for an hour. They weren't interested in my pillies or squid so I tried my hand at lure fishing instead. Grabbed a metal lure from the box, tied it onto my leader and fast retrieved it back - would you know two good sized salmon chased it. I stopped my retrieve and let the lure hit them in the nose and saw one of them grab the lure. STRIKE! The lure came off - I clearly hadn't tied it on properly. I grabbed a second lure and did exactly the same thing again - fed the fish two lures off two casts. Without any more metal lures I switched to a minnow grub but no interest. I went back to bait fishing and managed a few juvi snapper but nothing worth keeping. If fishing is about learning then today I have learnt that I can't be lazy when I'm tying my knots!!
