Thats a great recommendation, I'll put that on the list to check out in the tackle shops.

I took out the abu garcia 1-4 travel rod to test out on redfin, and I had an unbelievable redfin session, almost 20 caught and my PB 42cm which felt like it was going to snap the rod but the rod pulled through and proved its worth. Now to get the nasci reel. Thanks guys

Thats a great challenge, it will get tougher as you get through the year and knock off the easier species, although for you Dave, that includes Jacks and GTs!! How are you and Amy tracking so far? 🙂

I set myself challenges each year, it definitely keeps you motivated. At the start of this year, I set myself a target of 75 Murray Cod with 2 fish over a metre. With a little more than 4 months of cod fishing to go in the local waterways, I'm on 42 cod but the biggest ytd is 77cm .......I'm hoping for a good winter at Split Rock!

Our challenge is to catch as many species as possible over the 3 months of winter aiming to keep us off the warm recliner chairs over the winter months starting with a booked trip to copeton early June 🥶

I'm quite confident in a winter GT  a winter jack that's the prize🤌

I think I read that @dirvin21 and Amy, said he was going to see how many species he could catch through winter up here, again I don’t think it’s so much about a dead fish in the boat but the challenge of catching them.

And that what keeps the mind active.

That's what we're doing, setting ourselves a challenge to keep motivated

Thanks for replying. Never caught cods or perch, what size hook would you recommend for bait fishing?

any thoughts on what lures would be effective?

The lure fishing csn be tough in the rivers during winter but as Steve said weedless plastic grub and spinnerbaits, also a 3/8oz chatterbait with a 3 inch soft plastic work well on smaller cod and perch

If you're fishing worms or prawns for bait a 1/0 hook would be my choice and if using bogger baits like chicken for cod I'd go a 5/0 circle hook

  5. I find winter fishes just as well as summer, you may not catch as many fish but the size is often better

the biggest difference is scrap the summer early morning starts let the sun warm the water a bit

Amy and I are setting ourselves a winter challenge to see how many different species of fish we can catch over this winter

  6. Got to be careful with those charts they can get in your head,  fish will feed at any stage of the tide or solar/lunar cycle of tye opportunity presents itself

Bream in particular feed at all stages of the tide they're always hungry, top end of tide try right up on the edges, as the tide starts to runout they'll move back on the drop offs from the same edges, most of the big bream upriver spend 90% of their time feeding on submerged timber regardless of the tide

Hopefully I'll manage to land my first Cod on this setup in the near future.

The cod raiders are a great rod, perfect for casting chatterbaits and big plastics
