  1. Hi Gavin,

    Its pretty easy conversion if you need to replace floor since you can run all the dusting for steering and such. Without replacing floor need to get a little more creative.

    I'm almost finished replacing the transom on my Savage. Project went on ice for nearly 12 months while work was busy. Might have transom all glassed in and good as new in a few weeks.

    Ben

    Hi wolf,

    i recently replaced my floor in my savage pacific, just a tip, when we went to put the 1 new piece of glassed marine ply down it wouldnt fit and we didnt want to trim too much off the sides,

    so we cut it in half with a jigsaw cut then fitted them together and glassed back over the top worked a treat, im sick of my half cab as a 75hp honda low hrs on back, im wondering if its i conver it to centre console if this motor will be too big, fed up with having no fishing space, may start mine soon

    all the best

    gavin

  2. Damn! I should have come out last night ;)

    At least you have your mojo back, I can imagine your disappointment but don't worry. Jewfish 2 vs Lowrid3r 2 for the month of May.

    I bet that jew had a nice cold beer after escaping you. Here is a photo i took of the jew afterwards.

  3. Its been a few months but progress has been made. I ended up ripping up all the old stingers and glassing in new ones. The old ones had some signs of rot on closer inspection.

    The last 2 weeks has been epic. All the new stringers are glassed in and level ready to accept the floor. I can't believe how long this takes. I have been working from 9pm till 2am every night of the week to try and get ready to install the floor.

    Here are some of the things I had to do...

    * grind back rotten glass in floor

    * cut stringers

    * glass in stringers

    * build kill tank

    * glass kill tank

    * flowcoat kill tank

    * install bilge stringer

    * mount drains in kill tank and bilge stringer

    * install bungs in bilge stringer

    * cut floor sheets of ply

    * glass bottom of floor

    * foam fill cavities around kill tank

    * glass new stringer in skeg

    * more grinding :ranting2:

    * more sanding

    * more glassing

    * leveling stringers

    * wait for rain to stop :1badmood:

    See new photos, attached! :yahoo:

    I'm on a mission to get floor installed by Friday.

  4. Here is another approach to fishing thailand. Take a travel rod and a bag of jig heads and soft platics. The fish over there go mental for them. I don't think the reef fish have ever seen lures. I fished Koh Samui and Koh Tao. Both places you can find a patch of reef near the beach and cast away. Be prepared for lots of bust offs! They run hard for the coral. On Samui I met some locals and we all walked out into water about waist deep and fishing for a few hours. They were squiding but got lots of attention using SP's. The resort cooked whatever I brought back to the beach.

    I also caught heaps of squid. Caught a 50cm Coral Emperor and each night took my catch to the local resturant and they cooked it up for me Thai style. On Koh Tao its a bit tricky. You aren't allowed to fish within 1km of island. That said give a bag of SP's to a local and they will walk you to a beach or headland where you can fish or better still pay a longboat driver $40 to take you to some outer reefs.

    If you need a good hotel in Koh Tao check out Charm Churee Villas. If you are diving then I found Viking Divers to tbe the best.

    Day trips are fun but sports fishing goes OFF! If you are on the Phuket side then head over to Railay or Phi Phi. PhiPhi is busy with day trippers but at sunrise or sunset its tranquil.

  5. Just out of interest, how did you then get the boat and trailer home?

    Fryboy

    Called a mate who had a flatbed truck. took a couple of hours, got to bed around 4am.

    Insurance company has been great, they are paying for the repair and I just have $100 excess. There was no signs of rust and they accepted it was accident. :thumbup:

    Its already at the repair shop getting rebuilt. Should be back on the water soon.

  6. Hi guys,

    Seems like the bigger jews are cummin up through the hacking again woohoo

    Lowrid3r gets the credits for perfect gaff. Glad to share the experience with a good mate. Actually me that caught that one.

  7. Thanks for all the feedback guys. Brickman I think you are right, started where the small rust spot is on the inside of the bar plus weakspot due to U-bolt and too much flex.

    Day's Fishin, I'm getting quotes for full repair including that crack test Brickman mentioned. I think they are going to slide a thicker gauge bar over the existing bar and weld to the front triangle and move all the hardware across from the other bar eg tow ball.

    Thanks guys.

  8. I had a scary incident on Thursday night last week. My trailer snapped in two!

    Luckily no-one was hurt and the boat is fine. Happened at relatively low speed, about 20km/h.

    Just wanted to warn fellow boaties that these things do happen. There is no visible signs of corrosion, seems to be metal fatigue where the U-bolt goes around the drawbar.

    I should have slowed down more when I saw the pothole but it was hard to avoid because there was a traffic island reducing my room to manouver.

    Hopefully insurance will cover the accident. Fingers crossed.

  9. doing well mate,i have a tasman very similar to yours and couldnt tell you how many times i wish the cabin wasnt there,gets in the way but good at the moment for the little kids ect.Keep the great pics coming,your effort will be worth it....:biggrin2: :biggrin2: :thumbup:

    I own a share in another boat that is half cabin. I've threatened the other owners that I'll cut the bloody cabin off every time we get back from a fish. My kids don't want to come out on the boat so I figure time to get a CC ;)

  10. Not looking too good :(

    Attached the battery direct to trim motor...

    CLICK, CLICK then silence. Disconnected all the hydraulic hoses just incase there was a blockage and hence hydraulic stall. Nope, still not pumping.

    Might be able to get a replacement PT 112N-NP from the US for about $600. At least the AUD $ is near parity.

    Does anyone have an old motor destined for the scrap heap, maybe I can buy your tilt and trim...

    If Huey is out there can you source spare parts like this in OZ?

    Ben

  11. Ben, I may have some photos i will have to search the folders.. regards to the bilge, i have a couple of inspection ports on the floor so i can check cables etc all my cables run under the floor in piping... Also helps me feed cables through the pipes too..

    I have drawn up a little diagram of how i did it.. Pretty shocking art work but hope it may help lol...

    untitled.bmp

    very interesting... inspection ports, great idea. Curving the tube back up at the transome intead of out into the bilge box. That will help keep the moisture out of the wiring.

    thanks for taking the trouble to do that diagram, very helpful.

  12. Mate there will be a couple of chocie words :ranting2: along the way but the end result will be well worth it.. I have rebuilt mine, its a 4.5 savage voyager, original centre console. Floor, stringers and transom all rebuilt.. Don't want to really talk about the $ spent but theres something special about rebuilding an old girl... Now for the new motor.. Enjoy the bulid. :biggrin2:

    Kind Regards.. Livebait!! :1fishing1:

    Hi Livebait,

    Do you have any pics before you put the new floor in? It would be great to see what your bilge area, storage and console cable tubes looked like before the dreaded floor covered everything up.

    Ben

  13. Thanks Kingpig.

    Good point, should of tried that (so much for 4 years of elec engineering at uni)!

    What I'm not sure is how it should sound if the motor is fine. Will it spin even if there is a problem in the hydraulics or could there be a problem with the hydraulics and hence the motor stalls.

    Maybe I should disconnect the motor from the hydraulics and try again to rule out any other issues first.

    Ben

  14. Well I did some trouble shooting on the old Suzuki DT 85 Tilt and Trim system.

    The electrics turned out fine, relays were both outputting 12.5 V when trim switch flicked into up and down position.

    It looks like the motor has had it. I'm assuming that its a dead motor because it doesn't make any whirring noise. It just clicks and then silence.

    Even though there is very little oil in the system I assume the motor should still spin?

    Here are some pics from the manual, has anyone got a spare motor or know where I can pick one up (Huey)?

  15. Under floor - Wouldnt separating out a bilge area from the rest of the underfloor create a big problem? I mean, where does the water go that gets under the floor in the non bilge area? Maybe I misunderstood your point....?

    cheers

    Fryboy

    I see your point, I just called a boat builder and he said LEAVE a gap between bilge box and rest of floor area. Just keep the channel smallish so if the boat gets a hole water doesn't flood into the boat via a massive gap in the bilge area. That made sense so I'm keeping the floor area open to the bilge now. Just keeping it as a gap about 2cm high and only at the deepest part of the V.

    Ben

  16. Let the fun begin....

    With all the recent rain in Sydney my temporary carport built using an AUDI sun shade was leaking badly and the boat was filling with water and all the stringers were getting wet ;(

    I tried getting boat in the garage but it was 30cm too long. Time for the motor to come off! I was up until 3am Monday and used old climbing gear and a dyna bolt I installed in the beam.

    Here are the photos.

    The :wife: was not impressed! Now its impossible to enter the garage without crawling.

  17. Out of most of the CC boats I have fished out of, the hang on points for driver and passengers whilst on the move have seemed to be an after thought. Rod storage as well. Maybe fitting a rocket launcher above and around the console which will double as hang on bars for both driver and passangers. Standing while driving is way better on the back for all, having handles on both sides of the console makes it easier for the passengers as there is a dry and a wet side of the boat to when moving.

    Hope it helps.

    Greg

    Hi Greg,

    The fisherboat images and your comments about grab points has given me some good ideas. I'll build some stainless bars that go around the outside of the windshield and fork down the front sides of the console. Can't wait to get to the little details like stainless grab rails. Still seems so far off when I look at the boat with the missing floor ;)

  18. Ben,

    I have seen a few rebuilds on centre consoles and most run a conduit of 50-80mm pvc through the console base and the floor turned towards transom with an elbow (a sweep or long radius bend is best) to another length of pipe running parrallel with the keel and another bend through the floor just short of the transom. The conduit shouldnt be directly against your centre stringer or it will impede drainage. Also the conduit needs to be watertight on the terminations ie where cables enter the conduit otherwise the conduit will obviously fill with water.

    I would also run a smaller conduit on the otherside of the centre stringer for your transducer cable to prevent electrical interference due to induction.

    Boat box make some nice consoles http://www.boatbox.com.au/. Check out the consoles on fisher boats also http://www.fisherboats.com.au/boat-images.html. I know they are alum but replication with timber and glass woudnt be too difficult.

    Have you got an underfloor fuel tank already. If not consider it as it seems the perfect opportunity to fab and fit. Take time to consider any additions that will suit your fishing styles, you will enjoy your fishing even more the easier it becomes.

    I fished in a very similar Savage a lot of years ago and found the hull dependable and predictable in ride and at rest. Hope your very happy together :biggrin2:

    Cheers

    Marlin

    Hi Marlin,

    Thats a great idea putting 2 conduits. Never thought of that and would be sad if there was interference and had to run transducer separately after the floor goes in. I'll have to get a quote on underfloor fuel tank. The small space will require a custom tank.

    You sound like you've seen a few CC in your time. Maybe you can answer another question I have. Currently the bilge area isn't separated from the rest of the underfloor area. I was thinking of fiberglassing in a new ply box so the bilge area is closed off from the other underfloor sections. Would it be wise to do this and put in a bung so when the bilge gets water in it the water doesn't flow into the underfloor area. My concern is that water might not be able to flow out of the underfloor area through the small bung holes. So to put it more simply, do I try and section the boat into separate sealed compartments or not bother and leave all the underfloor open and easy for flow of water back and forth.

  19. I'm designing the centre console at the moment. Does anyone with a centre console have some advice on designing one of these boxes. Maybe you have something you don't like about your current console and if given the chance to design again would change X, Y or Z.

    I want to keep it relatively simple.

  20. Hey gazza,

    I can still feel the glass fibers, need to get a hazmat suit. Good day for boat reno's, bit windy so didn't feel bad not being out on the water.

    - cut off the cabin

    - vaccuumed crap out of boat

    - removed 1 rotten stringer

    - started preparing front section for raised floor

    - wiped intact stingers down with Acetone

    - build a cover

    Next weekend should be the new floor.

    BTW if anyone knows how to build a floor AND get it ready to accept centre console including hydralic steering cables please let me know. Still not sure how I'm going to get the cables back to the console.
