  3. Sleepless night so I decided to hit malabar area early and try get some yakkas or squid for a king. Arrived before first light fired out lots of berley for yakkas hook some but sabiki rigs got snagged in weeds but mate picked up one squid early. Moved on out the rocks and tried for more yakkas with no result only the pest mado. Tried floating out some squid strips but they were untouched, at this stage we were almost fed up and tried spinning a few lures which also turned up blank. While dabbling a few new lures just to see there action I had a few squid respond and attack the lures. Put on blue pilchard looking squid jig on and first cast brought up a decent calamari a decent 30cm hood approx (didn't measure it) or take photo to be honest I was to excited to get it back out live. Grabbed a rig I had made up the day before for jewies with 40lb trace (big mistake), slided out the big squid as my mate caught three more in the time it took me to tie a rig up. 5/6 minutes past and the rod tip bouncing a bit and squid is being harassed by something, waited for the run and struck the fish, got about ten/fifteen seconds of a good heavy run and that dreaded ping on the line 😢😢😢😢 fish gone. Should have stuck to the 80lb king traces. Could of been a shark what Ye raiders think ? Leader was slightly frayed and scratched but I don't think it had time to take me to the rocks to cut me off. All in all bit of confidence in the spot I only tried first time for kings

    Jig heads

I definitely am striking the fish when I get a bite I thaught the same after I dropped the first few I give it a good strike but not to extreme as @Green Hornet mentioned about them holding on but not hooked, and I don't give them a second of slack line. Try to keep drag fairly low but a steady wind in order to have constant pressure but giving them a chance to run if the need it as I fish light gear. It seems to be when I get them near shore the give a few head shakes and I end up watching them swim away. I'm generally catch and release anyways but we all like to have a picture of a few fish,

    Jig heads

Cheers Howard I'm using plastics around the 100mm mark little squidgy wrigglers up to 4/5" paddle tails etc. I fish mostly landbased, maybe a stinger hook might work, could be something to look into but would it effect action of the plastic?? I use S factor as scent and it seems to do the trick.
  6. @davetheboy when I caught mine with the same marking I also was catching a few wobbegong on the same day and there teeth are kind of in a v shape my only guess was a wobbegong had a nip at it.

    Jig heads

Hi raiders so I'm having some issue with jig heads and dropping fish. I like to kill a few hours after work flicking for flattys around some of the Sydney estuaries, I usually have success and catch a few but for some reason I am dropping more fish than I land, For example I might hook 8 but land 4, or worse hook 4 and land one 😂 I know it's the way it goes you can't land them all but I have recently dropped some big girls some around the 80+ mark and getting quite pi$$ed off. I use the mustad jig heads and match jig head size to plastics. So I don't think hook to plastic proportions are the issue. I have tried landing the fish as quickly as possible and I have let the fish tire itself out but they manage to shake or drop the hooks somehow. Has anyone had this issue or can anyone suggest something to help as I think it's fair to say you should definitely be landing more than you drop. Thanks in advance for any help. sean
  9. Hi mate just a question so in your middle picture the salmon has a wound near its tail, almost a V shaped wound. What might have caused that as I have caught salmon before with the same wound but very fresh wound that was bleeding when I landed it. Any idias what it might be?
  10. Hmmmmm thanks guys so I have essentially made shite of it and need it seen to asap. Everyday is a school day hey
  11. So a few months back I bought the daiwa bg8000 reel, affordable and relatively strong, I mostly use it from the rocks sliding livies so it gets the odd wash or spray of salt water. I rinse it well in fresh water after every use and give a generous application of wd40 to all moving parts of reel and wipe down. But it had stiffened up and just hasn't felt as smooth as it should. Why could this be and what can I do before situation deteriorates?
  12. Cheers mate, appreciate the info
  13. got to Stockton eventually recently found what we taught was a gutter but current was very strong and our rigs were dragged close to shore in no time(not washed in but dragged quickly to the right). Couple of runs but only one soapy, maybe 55cm. Nice flatty was got next morning alright but that was all. My question is we're we in wrong spot since current was to strong 4oz running star sinker just knotted us up most times, couldn't hold bottom. Was it a case of just finding a gutter with less current or could it have been fished differently to suit??
  14. Quick report on last night/this morning, gathered some yakkas and went on to fish the low tide with them first cast produced a nice flatly maybe 50/55 didn't measure it. Waiting for high tide in early morning we got a few yakkas chopped in half assuming tailor. Mate Briefly hooked up to something of size in close with soft plastic nuclear chicken jerk shad but it spat or shook the lure.couple more hours passed with nothing finished at 5am
  15. Hi fellow raiders going to give another crack at the mulloway tonight, will probably try get a few livies out. My question is flicking lures and vibes at night does it work and if so is it vibes all the way or hardbodys or what?? Thanks in advance for any help
  16. I can use apartments underground Parking but only the dimensions of as assigned car parking space can't take up any more room as for street parking I don't know of any that is close and safe. But thank you for your input
  17. Hi raiders so I'm looking to buy a boat for fish the harbour, botany port hacking etc what should I be looking for? Budget of about 5000$ would my budget get me something suitable for outside harbour etc. I want something safe tho not a ball af dirt. I have had lake boats at home for fishing and tinnys for hunting so I do have a small bit of experience on water. Can anyone give me a quick rundown on the essential do's and don't for safety maintenance and so on. My main reason for not having one is I live in a unit in Waterloo/zetland and have nowhere to keep one as underground car park is all I have availabil and boat would need more than the single car space designated. So are there storage places you can leave boats and the likes or do I need to join a boat club that provides me to a parking place. I'm sure a lot of people have encountered this issue. And last of all when I do solve this problem I happily can take somebody out fishing no cost in return for just basic knowledge of good boating/fishing ethics and safety on the water. Any help or tips would be much appreciated. Thank you for taking you time to read this. Sean.
  18. Trip organiser/ute driver pulled out that morning ?? to fond of the beer??

  20. Hi guys I'm planning a trip up palm beach way this weekend any recommendations for some places to fish? I have fished a few times down that way and been successful but I found the ground to be very snaggy and loose a lot of tackle
  21. Fair play mate the world be a better place with more of that attitude
  22. Cheers Matt I will be sure to look it up
  23. Thanks guys I use Fishbrain also and it can be irritating some of the dung that goes up on it but I'm looking for something more private than Fishbrain. I guess I could just keep all info on laptop/computer.
  24. Hi raiders I'm wondering is there an app or something online where I can keep a fishing diary And keep info on outings, photos, weather etc. I noticed a post here from 2013 but not many replies. It's more of a long term thing as I would like to see in years to come full recorded history with pictures and videos.
