  2. Hi Raiders, i am heading up to Port Mac in a few weeks. I have only two shots to get some fishing in. I am keen to target a Jewie or Cobia if possible??? I am land based and need some tips on where to fish and where to get live bait. Beach?? Break wall??? I have never fished here before so keen to get any info.

    Thanks!

    Neil

  3. Hey raiders, i was given 2 crab traps the other day. I think they are called "lift nets" (Meshed bottom ring and a collapsing net that lifts when you pull it up) I know that some traps are illegal but i cant seem to find anything on the NSW fisheries web about "lift nets" just witches hats and other traps that are not the same. Anyone got any info or could point me in the right direction?

Or are they crap at catching crabs and i should just go and get a "witches-hat"

Here is a pic from the web that is very similar to mine.

    Thanks!

  4. Hey guys, i have been sending out live mullet in the surf but find they don't last long. I usually just hook them through the nose. After about 10 minuets they are nearly dead...When i hook them behind the neck they seem to die even quicker and hooking in the tail the mullet usually comes off in the cast. What is the best way to rig a 15cm mullet off a surf beach????

    Thanks!

  5. Hey mate, i found the south end to be best for whiting and up near the spit for Jew. You can get squid and yackas around the rocky bays further around past the south end.

Let us know how you go.

    Hi guys,

Can anyone advise on any good fishing spots around Fingal bay/port stephens? I'm here at the moment and I wanted to see if anyone can guide me to any good spots? I am targeting whiting, bream, Jew fish and also I would like to know if you can pull any fresh blood worms out of the sand here?

Please either post here or inbox me.

    Thank you

    Regards,

    Zac

  6. Just out of interest what stage of the tide were you trying to catch the mullet? As I use a trap which seems to work better on low tide so I was just wondering.

    Regards,

    Nathan

Hi Nathan, it was just on low tide. But the lake lags behind a bit. There was also large tides over the weekend.

I don't use the traps as i am after the bigger mullet close to the 15cm size. I usually only get the small ones 5cm or so in the traps.

I send them off the beach for Jewies. If i get 6 good ones that is usually more than enough.

Might see you down there one time mate!

  7. Thanks guys! I usually do OK but they were hard to get today. Probably people throwing cast nests at them spooked them a bit. I might try the small size 12 green hooks next time.

  8. I worked hard today for a hand full of poddy mullet in Narra lake. I was fishing with the standard float and small long shank hook. For 2 hrs work i managed 5 to send out off the beach.

It was frustrating to see some blokes using a cast net to catch them. I thought they were illegal in NSW???? Is this true?

  9. THANKS guys! That is a great help!

I think i will stick to the beach and have a night sesh.

Maybe i will try to land a Salmon or Tailor 1st as live bait and then send them out! I will also take some fresh squid as bait for back up!

Will let you know how i go!

  10. Hey Raiders, i am heading up to Anna Bay next week and wanted to fish Stockton beach. I am going up with my wife and kids so i only have one shot at hitting the beach for a night fish or morning fish. I was after any tips on fishing stockton beach at early morn or night.

Going for one thing: A massive Jewfish

    Questions:

    1) Do i just pull up at any gutter or is there a better place to fish more than others (Nth end/south end/ middle)?

    2) Is it best to fish an hour either side of the high? early morning or night?

    3) Best bait options?

    4) or should i just not fish the beach and just drive to the break wall?

If you don't want to share your tips here publicly, feel free to PM me.

    I would appreciate any help!

    THANKS!

    Mushtaka!

  11. Hi Raiders, I took my two year old fishing for the first time today.

I found a great spot on Narrabeen lake at the end of Wimbledon Ave.

It is a good spot because there is a small pontoon and a park for the kids to use between fish.

The key is burly hard with bread and use a small (size 12) long shank hook, along with a small float. Just like you would use trying for potty mullet.

I would hook the fish and then call out to my little boy and he would come running over and reel it in (great team work) thumbup.gif

We landed a few undersized bream and a nice Blacky. All fish were released of course.

Good times! He had so much fun! (so did i!) Hope for many more trips in the future!

Anyway i thought i would post this just in case anyone is looking for a good spot to go fishing with young kids.

  12. I think squids in pittwater have moved on :( though last saturday I spoke to bunch of boys who claims saw a guy catch 5 big ones in 30minutes off the palm beach warf.

Interesting........ I have been down there 2 sometimes 3 times a week over the last few months for only for the occasional 1 squid if lucky and 1/2 doz Yackas for bait.

I have a few other spots further down and up in Pittwater too...But they have not been firing either. I think you need a boat so you can move around.

  13. Hey mate, i am land based.

You caught one with your hands???? Far out!!!

Well done mate.. Nice bag of squid! I only caught my first one last week and it was with my bare hands!! cause for the first time ever I didnt bother to bring a jig with me.. Were you land based?

  14. Well after coming home time and time again from Pittwater with no squid and to a wife that shakes her head and says "why do you even bother!"

I changed my spot and started to fish areas around the Spit. Things have really been heating up. Not massive squid but perfect for Jewie bait!

I have been landing these on the Yamashita live, natural 2.5g. Only took 1.5hr on the run out tide.

I love salt and pepper squid it is my fav food but i know it is a fav food of the jewie too! mmmmm why does the jew fish always win!

I will let you all know how i go off the beach latter this week!

  15. I've been managing a few out of pittwater but not decent numbers but the ones I have got have generally been big squid 30cm+ hoods.

Like this one went about 50cm hood.

Nice squid! The joys of having a boat....

I am land based and the 4 spots i usually do pretty well in have been really hard work this year. Hope a few big ones come my way soon!

I am thinking i might start using a yacka on a squid spike under a float.

  16. Went out for a quick flick tonight down at the Spit. I have found that Pittwater hasn't been producing for a while now so i thought i would try a different location. I meet two nice blokes down there that gave me a squid that they caught. I moved around a bit and managed to find 2 other smaller ones. Then a big one hit the jig. Not a massive one (28cm hood) but its been a while so pretty happy!!

Think i will give Pittwater a miss from now on! Anyone else found the same in Pittwater?

    BRING ON A BIG JEWIE!!!!
